Part One: The Empty Victory
The Games ended without ceremony.
No closing speech. No awards. The Horobi Tou had won, but no one celebrated. The other teams packed in silence. The stands emptied quickly.
Muken stood at the edge of the Hikari Tou section, watching the Horobi Tou depart. Kuro walked at the front, her grey uniform blending with the dim light. Her team followed like ghosts.
"They are leaving," Kage said.
"They got what they came for."
"Did they?"
Muken did not know.
Shiori approached. Her face was still pale, but her eyes were sharp. The draining had weakened her, but not broken her.
"The Shin Tou wants a debriefing. All team captains. And you."
"Why me?"
"Because you are the only one who can sense Kodoku's influence. They want to know what you felt."
Muken nodded. "When?"
"Now."
He followed her. As they walked, he looked back at the empty arena. The crystal floor was scarred from the battles. Dark marks where shadows had clashed.
"We won," Kage said.
"Did we?"
"We survived. That is a kind of winning."
Muken said nothing.
The Shin Tou council chamber was waiting.

Part Two: The Council's Demand
The Shin Tou council chamber was cold.
Black obsidian walls. High ceiling lost in shadow. Five council members sat on elevated thrones. The Grand Speaker sat at the center, her ancient eyes fixed on Muken.
Shiori stood beside him. Other team captains filled the room.
The Grand Speaker's voice echoed.
"The Horobi Tou has been disqualified. Their methods were unclean. However, they have already left the Shin Tou. We could not detain them without cause."
Murmurs spread.
"They stole something. From the vault. A Dream Seed. A crystallized fragment of a primordial dream. It is ancient. Powerful. In the wrong hands, it could create a permanent nightmare realm."
Muken's blood ran cold.
"The Seed," Kage said. "Kuro mentioned it."
The Grand Speaker looked at Muken. "Your shadow sensed them. What did you feel?"
Muken stepped forward. "They are not witches anymore. Their magic is corrupted. They carry Kodoku's taint."
"And their leader? Kuro?"
"She is like me. A fragment. But she chose to serve him."
The room was silent.
The Grand Speaker nodded slowly. "Then we must prepare. Kodoku has the Seed. He will try to use it. We need to find him before he completes his ritual."
"How?" the Honoo captain asked. "We do not know where he is hiding."
The Grand Speaker looked at Muken.
"His shadow can sense Kodoku. He is our only tracker."
Muken's heart pounded.
"They want to use us," Kage said.
"I know."
"Will you agree?"
Muken looked at Shiori. She nodded.
"Yes," he said. "I will find him."
The council murmured. The Grand Speaker raised a hand.
"Then it is decided. You will lead a mission to track Kodoku. The Shin Tou will provide resources. You leave in three days."
Muken bowed. "Understood."
As he left the chamber, Shiori walked beside him.
"You could have refused."
"If I refused, who would go? No one else can sense him."
"That does not mean it has to be you."
Muken looked at her. "Yes. It does."
She was silent.
Then she nodded. "Then I go with you."
They walked out of the Shin Tou spire together.
The sky was grey. The memory rain had started again.

Part Three: The Return
The carriage ride back to Hikari Tou was quiet.
Shiori slept, her head against the window. Ren stared out at the passing landscape. Yuki read her book, eyes glazed. Haru sat beside Muken, hands folded.
"Do you think we can stop him?" Haru asked quietly.
"Kodoku?"
"Yes."
Muken looked at his shadow. It was still.
"I do not know. But we have to try."
Haru nodded. "I will help. However I can."
"Even if it is dangerous?"
"Especially if it is dangerous." She looked at her hands. "I spent my whole life being careful. Being safe. That did not help anyone."
Muken smiled. "You are braver than you think."
"I am learning to be."
The gates of Hikari Tou appeared. The crystal spires gleamed.
Kagura was waiting in the courtyard.
"You are alive," she said.
"Barely," Ren muttered.
Kagura's eyes found Muken. "The council told me everything. The Seed. The Horobi Tou. Your new mission."
"I did not volunteer."
"You did not refuse." She walked toward him. "Are you ready for this?"
"No."
"Good. Honesty is the first step." She placed a hand on his shoulder. "Rest tonight. Tomorrow, we train. Harder than before."
Muken nodded.
He walked to his room, his shadow trailing behind him.
But as he reached his door, Kage spoke.
"Something is wrong."
Muken paused. "What?"
"The Seed. I can feel it. Faint. But getting closer."
Muken's blood ran cold. "They are coming here?"
"No. Something else. Something new."
Muken looked out the window. The sky was dark. The stars were hidden.
He did not sleep well that night.

Part Four: The Dream
That night, Muken dreamed.
He rarely dreamed. But tonight, something forced its way in.
He stood in a dark forest. Trees made of shadow, branches like grasping hands. The sky was black, starless.
In the distance, a figure knelt.
Kodoku. Pale, thin, with long grey hair and hollow eyes. His robes were tattered. In his hands, a glowing seed.
"You see me," Kodoku said. His voice was soft, tired. "I wanted you to see."
"What do you want?"
"To save dreams. To preserve them. The towers let them fade. I will not."
"By turning them into nightmares?"
"By giving them eternal form." Kodoku looked up. His eyes were empty, but not cold. They were sad. "Your shadow understands. It is a fragment of me. A piece of what I sacrificed."
"He is telling the truth," Kage said. "He believes what he says."
"That does not make him right."
"No. But it makes him dangerous."
Kodoku stood. The Seed pulsed in his hands.
"Come find me, Muken Sato. When you are ready to understand. I will be waiting."
The dream shattered.
Muken woke gasping.
His room was dark. His shadow stretched across the floor, trembling.
"He reached out to us," Kage said. "Through the connection."
"Can he do that again?"
"Yes. Whenever he wants."
Muken sat up. His hands were shaking.
"We need to find him. Before he finds us first."
He looked at the window. The aurora sky was pale gold. Dawn.
He had not slept. But he did not feel tired.
He felt something else. Determination.
He dressed in his grey uniform. He touched the crescent emblem.
Then he walked to Kagura's study.

Part Five: The Preparation
The next morning, Kagura gathered the team in her study.
"The council has authorized a search mission. Muken will lead. Shiori, Ren, Yuki, and Haru will accompany him. You will track Kodoku to his hiding place and retrieve the Dream Seed."
"Kill him?" Ren asked.
"If necessary. But capture is preferred. He was once a great scholar. The council wants to understand his research."
Muken looked at his teammates. Shiori calm. Ren eager. Yuki worried. Haru scared.
"When do we leave?" Muken asked.
"Dawn tomorrow."
He nodded.
The team dispersed. Haru went to pack. Ren went to sharpen his blades. Yuki went to research the void.
Shiori stayed.
"You are scared," she said.
"Yes."
"So am I." She looked at him. "But I would rather be scared with you than safe without you."
Muken's throat tightened.
"Thank you."
"Do not thank me. Just do not die."
She walked away.
Muken stood alone in the study.
"She cares about you," Kage said.
"I know."
"Do not let that become a weakness."
"It will not. It is a strength."
His shadow pulsed.
He walked to his room.
That night, he sat by his window, watching the aurora sky.
"Are you afraid?" Kage asked.
"Yes."
"Good. Fear keeps us alive."
"Will we be able to stop him?"
"I do not know. But we will try. Together."
Muken looked at his shadow. It pulsed softly.
"Together."
He lay down on his bed. He did not sleep.
But his shadow dreamed for him. Of a man who had lost everything. Of a seed that could create a new world. Of a choice that was coming, whether he was ready or not.
Muken stared at the ceiling.
No cracks.
But tomorrow, he would enter the void.
And nothing would ever be the same.
