Part One: The Waiting
Three days passed.
Muken spent them preparing. Meditating. Resting. Waiting.
Each morning, he trained with Shiori. Wooden swords clashing in the empty chamber. Each afternoon, he sat with Kage, practicing shadow shapes. Discs, walls, claws. Each evening, he stared at the ceiling, counting the hours until dawn.
"You are restless," Kage said on the third night.
"I am tired of waiting."
"The mission begins tomorrow. Gin Tou."
"And then Midori Tou. And then the Abandoned Reach."
"And then Kodoku."
Muken sat up. "What if we are too slow? What if he attacks before we are ready?"
"Then we adapt. We always adapt."
A knock on the door.
Haru stood in the hallway. Her face was pale.
"Muken. A scout arrived. You need to see this."
He followed her to the courtyard.
The scout was barely standing.

Part Two: The Scout's Report
On the fourth morning, a scout arrived at Hikari Tou.
Her uniform was torn. Her face was pale. She was from the Shin Tou border patrol.
Kagura met her in the courtyard. "Report."
"Kodoku is not waiting for the Seed to blossom. He is building an army. At the Chrysalis."
Murmurs spread through the crowd.
"An army of what?" Kagura asked.
"Nightmares. Constructs. And figures. Human shaped. But wrong. They do not move like people. They move like shadows."
Muken's blood ran cold.
"Remnants," Kage whispered. "He pulled remnants from the dream-stuff."
"How many?" Kagura asked.
"Dozens. Maybe more. They are gathering. Waiting."
"Waiting for what?"
The scout shook her head. "I do not know."
Kagura turned to Muken. "We need to talk."
The crowd dispersed. Soldiers rushed to prepare defenses. Healers gathered supplies.
Shiori stood beside Muken. "This changes everything."
"Or nothing. We still need the skills. We still need to stop him."
"But now there is a war."
Muken looked at the scout. She was trembling.
"Then we fight."
He followed Kagura to her study.

Part Three: The First Incarnation
Kagura's study was crowded.
Shiori, Ren, Yuki, Haru, and Muken sat on low stools. Kagura stood by the window.
"What the scout saw is not new. It has happened before. Long before any of you were born."
She turned. Her face was grave.
"The Dream World was not always ruled by the seven towers. There was a time before. The First Incarnation."
Muken leaned forward.
"Three leaders emerged. They had different visions."
She raised her hand. Three holographic images appeared.
Jin. A tall, severe man with serpentine eyes. "He believed dreams should be weaponized."
Yoru. A woman with hair that merged with shadows. "She believed nightmares were misunderstood."
Kyo. A floating eye surrounded by rings of light. "He believed the Dream World should merge with the human world."
"They were defeated. Their bodies destroyed. Their dreams scattered."
"Then how are they back?" Shiori asked.
Kagura looked at Muken.
"Kodoku found a way. A forbidden fruit. The Remnant Fruit. It pulls the echo of a forgotten dreamer from the dream-stuff and gives it form."
Muken's shadow stirred.
"Like me," Kage said. "A fragment. A remnant."
"These remnants are not the original leaders. They are shadows. But they have their memories. Their skills. Their hunger."
"And now they serve Kodoku," Ren said.
"Now they serve his vision."
The room was silent.
Kagura stepped away from the window.
"The towers must unite. The Shin Tou is already mobilizing. The Honoo Tou has pledged warriors. The Mizu Tou will send scouts. The Midori Tou will send healers. The Gin Tou will share knowledge. The Kin Tou will negotiate."
She looked at Muken.
"Your mission has not changed. You still need the three skills. You still need to consume the Seed. But now there is a war to fight while you learn."
Muken stood. "Let me help. I can fight"
"No." Kagura's voice was sharp. "You are not ready. If you die, the Seed cannot be stopped. You are our only weapon against Kodoku."
"Then what do I do?"
"You learn. Fast. And you let us buy you time."
Shiori stood beside him. "I will go with him. Protect him."
Kagura nodded. "Ren, Yuki, Haru – you will stay. We will need every fighter."
Ren cracked his knuckles. "Finally. A real fight."
Haru's hands trembled. Yuki's face was pale. But they nodded.
Muken looked at them. His teammates. His friends.
"When do we leave?" he asked.
"Dawn. The Gin Tou is expecting you."
The meeting ended.
As they walked out, Haru grabbed Muken's arm.
"Come back. All of you."
"We will."
She did not look convinced.

Part Four: The Night Before War
That night, Muken stood on the balcony.
The aurora sky was dark. Below, soldiers and supplies filled the courtyard. Lanterns glowed. Voices called out orders. The tower was awake, preparing.
"You are thinking about them," Kage said.
"About Ren. Yuki. Haru. They are going to fight while we train."
"They chose this."
"They should not have to."
"The world does not ask what we want. It asks what we are willing to give."
Muken leaned on the railing.
"Kage."
"Yes."
"When this is over – if we survive – what do you want?"
The shadow was silent for a long moment.
"I want to understand what I am. What we are. What we can become."
"That is not an answer."
"It is the only answer I have."
Muken looked up at the sky.
"Dawn."
"Dawn."
He turned and walked inside.
Shiori was waiting in the corridor.
"You should sleep."
"So should you."
"I will sleep when we are safe."
Muken nodded. "Tomorrow, Gin Tou."
"Tomorrow, we learn to leave our bodies behind."
"Sounds pleasant."
She almost smiled. "Goodnight, Muken."
"Goodnight."
She walked away.
Muken entered his room. He lay down on the bed.
He did not sleep. He stared at the ceiling.
The ceiling had no cracks.
But he could hear them. The whispers of war. The footsteps of soldiers. The distant hum of magic being prepared.
The war was coming.
He had to be ready.
His shadow pulsed.
"We will be," Kage said.
Muken closed his eyes.
He did not dream.
But his shadow dreamed for him. Of three leaders risen from the dead. Of an army of nightmares. Of a seed that could end everything.
And of a boy who had to learn three impossible skills before the world burned.
