Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 11: AFTER YOU

The world didn't stop. That was the hardest part. The sun still rose. Classes still continued. People still laughed in hallways like nothing had changed.

But for Sofia— everything felt different. Because he wasn't there anymore. Not really. She still saw him. Sometimes. Across the room. In passing. In quiet, accidental moments. But he felt distant now. Like someone she used to know. Like a memory that hadn't faded yet— but was starting to.

Sofia sat in class, her notebook open. The same one. The same pages. But the words had changed. They were heavier now. Softer. More careful.

"Some people teach you love…"

"Others teach you how to let go."

She stopped writing. Her fingers tightened slightly around the pen. Because she didn't know which one he was. Maybe both.

Meanwhile— Kenzo sat in the same classroom. Same seat. Same silence. But something was missing. Or maybe— someone. His eyes drifted. Automatically. Without thinking. And landed on her. Sofia. She wasn't looking at him. Didn't even glance his way.

And somehow— that hurt more than anything else Because before— she always noticed. Now— she didn't.

Kenzo looked away quickly. His jaw tightening slightly. "Focus," he muttered to himself. But his mind wouldn't listen. Because everywhere he looked— he saw her. In empty seats. In quiet corners. In places they used to sit together. In moments that used to mean something.

After class, Sofia packed her things quickly. She didn't stay. Didn't linger. She learned her lesson. Staying only made things harder.

Kenzo watched her. From a distance. His body still. But his thoughts— anything but. He could go after her. He should. But he didn't move. Because something held him back. Not pride. Not ego. Fear. Fear that she wouldn't stop this time. Fear that she wouldn't turn around. Fear that he had already lost her.

Days passed. Then weeks. And slowly— they became strangers again. Not completely. But enough. Enough to avoid each other. Enough to pretend. Enough to survive.

Sofia started smiling again. Not the same way. Not as easily. But she tried. With friends. With conversations. With moments that distracted her just enough to breathe.

But at night— it was different. At night, everything felt louder. The silence. The memories. The what-ifs. She would stare at her phone sometimes. Not expecting anything. But still— hoping. Even just a message. Even just her name. But nothing came.

Kenzo, on the other hand— didn't even try to pretend. He became quieter. More distant. Even from people who knew him. Because now— he understood something he had avoided for too long. He missed her. Not in a simple way. Not in a passing thought. But in everything. In silence. In noise. In moments that didn't feel complete anymore.

One night— he picked up his phone again. Her name still there. Unchanged. He stared at it. For a long time. Then finally— he typed.

"Sofia…"

He stopped. Because what came next?

"I miss you"?

"I'm sorry"?

"Can we try again"?

None of it felt enough. None of it felt right. Because he knew— words now wouldn't fix what he broke then.

He deleted the message. Locked his phone. And leaned back against the wall. Closing his eyes. "…Too late," he whispered.

But somewhere— deep down— He still hoped. Even if he didn't deserve to.

And Sofia? She was learning something too. Something painful. Something real. That sometimes— love doesn't end because you stop caring. It ends because one person couldn't stay. And the other… got tired of waiting.
