Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 – Trigger

The creature didn't slow down.

If anything—

it got sharper.

Kael stepped in again, closing the distance before the gap disappeared. The dagger moved with him, cutting forward at an angle—

Pulse—

The impact landed deeper than before.

Closer to the core.

The creature staggered.

But it didn't fall.

It adapted.

Its body twisted unnaturally, the armored layers shifting as if they were learning how to close the gaps Kael had been exploiting.

"…figured."

Kael pulled back, adjusting his footing.

The next attack came faster.

Too fast.

The creature's arm snapped forward, not wide this time—direct, precise.

Kael tried to move—

but he was late.

The hit landed clean.

The force drove straight into his chest, lifting him off the ground before slamming him back down hard. The impact rattled through his entire body, the air leaving his lungs in a sharp, silent burst.

For a second—

everything went quiet.

No sound.

No movement.

Just pressure.

Kael lay there, his vision blurring slightly at the edges.

"…not enough."

The thought came slower this time.

Heavier.

His body didn't respond immediately.

The creature stepped closer.

Heavy.

Measured.

Not rushing.

Finishing.

Kael's fingers twitched slightly against the ground.

No system.

No help.

Nothing.

"…so that's it?"

The question wasn't fear.

It was irritation.

Because this—

this wasn't where it was supposed to end.

The creature raised its arm.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

Then—

he moved.

Not fast.

Not clean.

Just enough.

He rolled to the side as the attack came down, the ground cracking where his body had been a second earlier.

Kael forced himself up.

His breathing was uneven now.

His body slower.

But his eyes—

clear.

"…again."

The creature turned toward him.

And attacked.

Kael didn't meet it head-on this time.

He stepped back.

Then to the side.

Then forward.

Each movement smaller.

More precise.

No wasted motion.

The creature swung—

Kael slipped past it.

Barely.

The dagger moved.

Not wide.

Not strong.

Exact.

The blade slid into the same opening as before—

Pulse—

The impact hit deeper.

The creature staggered harder this time, its body jerking as the core flickered violently beneath the armored layers.

Kael pulled back instantly.

Breathing heavier now.

"…one more."

The creature didn't wait.

It surged forward again—

Faster than before.

Kael stepped in—

Not away.

Into it.

The timing was off.

Too early.

The strike clipped him again—

Pain shot through his side—

But he didn't stop.

He forced through it.

The dagger drove forward—

Straight toward the core.

Pulse—

The impact exploded deeper than any before.

For a second—

everything froze.

Then—

the core cracked.

A sharp, unstable flicker burst through the creature's body, its form collapsing inward as the energy holding it together broke apart.

It fell.

Heavy.

Still.

Silence returned.

Kael didn't move immediately.

His breathing was rough now.

His body barely holding steady.

"…done."

Then—

the system responded.

Not gently.

Not cleanly.

It forced itself into existence.

[Condition Met]

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…finally."

The interface flickered again.

[Host Survived Critical Threshold][Combat Stress Recognized]

A pause.

Then—

[Level Increased]

Kael stared at it.

No number.

Not yet.

Then—

[Level 2]

Silence.

No rush of power.

No sudden change.

Just… confirmation.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…so you do respond."

But only when it mattered.

Only when he pushed far enough.

His gaze lifted slightly.

Deeper into the Rift—

that presence was still there.

Stronger.

Heavier.

Waiting.

Kael tightened his grip on the dagger.

Level 2.

Barely anything.

But enough.

"…then we keep going."

No relief.

No turning back.

Just forward.

Because now—

he understood.

The system wouldn't carry him.

It would only acknowledge him.

And that meant one thing.

Everything from here—

he had to take himself.
