Chapter 26 - Chapter 26 – Weight

The ground didn't just rumble.

It shifted.

Kael felt it through his feet first.

A low vibration, steady and heavy, like something large was moving with purpose—not rushing, not chasing… just advancing.

He didn't stop.

But he didn't move faster either.

His breathing stayed controlled.

His grip on the dagger steady.

"…big."

That was all he said.

The air thickened again as he moved deeper, the faint glow beneath the cracks in the ground dimming, replaced by something darker… denser.

Then he saw it.

At first, it looked like part of the terrain.

A shape rising slowly from the uneven ground, its form blending into the Rift itself.

Then it moved.

The creature pulled itself forward, massive limbs dragging against the fractured surface. Its body was thick, layered, almost armored, with jagged edges that looked less like skin and more like broken stone fused together.

Its head lifted.

No clear face.

Just a core of dim light buried deep within its upper body, flickering like it was struggling to stay lit.

Kael stopped.

"…you're not like the others."

The creature didn't respond.

It stepped forward.

The ground cracked under its weight.

Kael adjusted his stance.

Lower.

More grounded.

The dagger flickered slightly in his hand, the pulse along its edge steady but… quieter than before.

No system.

No warning.

Just this.

The creature moved.

Slow.

Too slow.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…not slow."

He moved first.

Closing the distance before the creature could fully react.

The dagger came up—

He struck.

The blade hit its outer layer—

—and stopped.

No pulse.

No burst.

Just resistance.

Kael's eyes sharpened instantly.

"…armor."

The creature reacted.

Fast.

Its arm came down in a heavy arc, far quicker than its size should have allowed.

Kael pulled back—

but not fast enough.

The impact clipped him.

Not direct.

Not full force.

But enough.

The blow sent him sliding across the ground, his body hitting hard before he forced himself to roll and recover.

His breath caught for half a second.

Pain.

Real this time.

Kael pushed himself back to his feet.

"…good."

The word came out quieter.

But sharper.

He stepped forward again.

No hesitation.

The creature advanced.

They met again in the middle.

This time, Kael didn't aim for the surface.

He watched.

The movement.

The rhythm.

The way its body shifted when it attacked.

There.

A slight delay.

A weakness.

The core.

Buried.

Protected.

But not unreachable.

Kael moved.

The creature swung again—

Kael used the motion.

He stepped in close, slipping past the outer arc of the attack, his body lowering as he moved under the massive limb.

Too close for a full strike.

So he adjusted.

The dagger shifted in his grip—

And he drove it forward—

Not deep.

Not powerful.

Precise.

The blade slipped between two armored layers—

Pulse.

This time—

it triggered.

A sharp burst of energy exploded from the point of contact, not breaking the armor, but forcing a reaction from within.

The creature staggered.

Just slightly.

That was enough.

Kael pulled back instantly.

Breathing steady.

Eyes locked.

"…so you can feel it."

The creature responded.

Its movements changed.

Less brute force.

More controlled.

It stepped forward again.

Faster.

Kael moved to the side—

but the creature adjusted mid-motion, its arm sweeping across with unexpected precision.

The hit landed.

Clean.

Kael's body lifted slightly from the ground before crashing back down, the force knocking the air from his lungs as pain spread across his ribs.

For a second—

he didn't move.

The world tilted slightly.

Quiet.

Then—

he forced himself up.

Slow.

"…still not enough."

No system.

No help.

Just him.

Kael wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand.

Then stepped forward again.

Not faster.

Not stronger.

Just… better.

The creature came again.

This time—

Kael didn't rush.

He waited.

Watched.

The attack came—

He moved.

Cleaner.

Tighter.

Closer.

He slipped past the strike by inches, his body turning just enough to avoid it completely.

Then he stepped in—

The dagger drove forward again—

Pulse—

Deeper this time.

Closer to the core.

The creature reacted violently, its body jerking as the energy disrupted its center.

Kael pulled back.

Not finished.

Not yet.

But closer.

The ground trembled again.

Not from the creature.

From deeper.

Kael's eyes flicked past it.

Something else was coming.

Stronger.

"…so you're just the beginning."

He looked back at the creature in front of him.

Still standing.

Still dangerous.

Kael adjusted his stance.

"…then I finish you first."

No rush.

No panic.

Just focus.

Because if this was only the start—

Then stopping here—

wasn't an option.
