Chapter 28 - Chapter 29 – Aftermath

The barrier resisted more on the way out.

Not violently.

But enough to remind him—

this place wasn't meant to be entered.

Or left.

Kael pressed forward anyway.

His hand met the thin layer of energy, fingers sliding across its surface until he found that same inconsistency—the slight shift in resistance that didn't belong.

"…there."

He stepped through.

The distortion wrapped around him for a brief second before releasing him back into the normal world.

And just like that—

the weight disappeared.

The air felt lighter.

Easier to breathe.

Too easy.

Kael didn't move immediately.

The contrast hit harder than expected.

Inside the Rift—

everything resisted him.

Outside—

nothing did.

"…annoying."

He walked forward.

No alarms.

No guards.

No one waiting.

Just silence.

Like nothing had happened.

Kael adjusted his sleeve slightly as he moved, hiding the tear where one of the creatures had caught him. The faint ache in his side flared when he shifted his weight.

Still there.

Good.

He kept walking.

By the time he reached the main path, the world had already moved on.

Students talking.

Laughter.

Footsteps echoing across the grounds.

Normal.

Too normal.

"…they don't feel it."

Kael passed through the crowd without slowing.

Voices drifted around him.

Fragments of conversation.

"Did you hear about the Rift?"

"They said it was A-rank…"

"No one even knows who handled it…"

Kael's eyes didn't shift.

"They're still investigating."

"Probably some instructor…"

"Or a high-level hunter…"

He kept walking.

No name.

No credit.

Nothing.

"…good."

It was easier that way.

He reached the building and moved inside, the noise dimming slightly as doors closed behind him.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Then—

"Kael."

He stopped.

Liora.

She stood a few steps behind him, arms crossed, her expression somewhere between annoyed and relieved.

"You disappeared again."

Kael glanced at her.

"I left."

She stared at him for a second.

Then sighed.

"…you're really bad at explaining things."

He didn't respond.

Her eyes moved over him briefly.

Not obvious.

But careful.

"You look worse than yesterday."

Kael adjusted his posture slightly.

"I didn't sleep."

She didn't buy it.

That much was clear.

But she didn't push.

"…right."

A short pause.

Then, quieter—

"Just don't disappear again."

Kael held her gaze for a second.

"…I won't."

It wasn't a promise.

But it wasn't empty either.

Liora seemed to accept it.

Or at least decided not to question it further.

"Good."

She turned slightly.

Then stopped.

"…you coming?"

Kael looked at her.

Then shook his head.

"Not now."

She studied him for a second longer.

Then gave a small nod.

"Fine. Don't overthink whatever it is you're overthinking."

She walked off.

Kael watched her go.

Then turned the other way.

His room was quiet.

Still.

The moment he stepped inside, the noise of everything outside faded completely.

Kael sat down slowly.

His body finally caught up with him.

The ache in his side deepened.

His shoulders felt heavier.

"…so that's the cost."

No system message.

No healing.

Just damage.

He leaned back slightly, eyes shifting upward.

The interface appeared.

[Name: Kael Riven][Level: 4]

Still there.

He stared at it for a moment.

Then stood.

Testing.

A step forward.

A shift in weight.

A quick turn.

Faster than before.

Not by much.

But noticeable.

He moved again.

Burst Step—

The world snapped slightly as his position shifted across the room in an instant.

Cleaner.

More controlled.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…better."

But not enough.

He stopped.

The memory hit.

The creature.

The core.

The moment he almost didn't move.

His expression hardened slightly.

"That wasn't training."

Silence.

"…that was survival."

And survival—

was unreliable.

Too many variables.

Too many chances to fail.

Kael lowered his gaze.

"If I go back like that…"

A pause.

"…I die."

No emotion.

Just fact.

He stood still for a few seconds.

Then—

"…then I don't go back like that."

The decision settled instantly.

Not rushed.

Not forced.

Clear.

Kael moved to the side, picking up the dagger as it flickered briefly into existence in his hand before stabilizing.

He studied it.

A tool.

Nothing more.

Which meant—

it depended entirely on him.

Kael stepped back into the center of the room.

Adjusted his stance.

Lower.

More balanced.

"…then I train."

Not for strength.

Not for power.

For control.

For precision.

For survival—

without relying on luck.

Because next time—

there wouldn't be room for mistakes.

And he already knew—

something deeper in the Rift—

was still waiting.
