"Try."
The word left Ava's lips like a challenge.
Not fear.
Not hesitation.
A challenge.
For a second—
Nothing moved.
Even the massive entity paused.
Processing.
Calculating.
Then—
It tightened its grip.
Ava gasped as pressure crushed around her ribs.
"Resistance continues," it said.
Rayan moved instantly.
He didn't think.
Didn't plan.
He just acted.
Running forward—
He grabbed the nearest metal rod from the broken structure—
And drove it straight into the cables running along the entity's arm.
Sparks exploded.
The entity jerked.
Its grip loosened—
Just enough.
Ava dropped.
She hit the ground hard—
But rolled, forcing herself up.
Rayan pulled her back.
"Move!"
They stumbled away together.
The entity recalibrated.
"External interference detected."
Rayan muttered—
"Yeah, that's me."
Ava steadied herself.
Her breathing uneven—
But her eyes—
Sharp.
"It's adapting," she said.
Rayan glanced at her.
"So are you."
The entity raised its arm again.
This time—
The energy didn't gather slowly.
It pulsed instantly.
Ava felt it before it fired.
"Down!"
She grabbed Rayan—
Pulled him with her—
The blast tore across the ground where they had stood.
A deep crater formed.
Rayan stared at it.
"…Okay. That would've killed us."
Ava didn't respond.
She was watching the entity.
Feeling it.
"It's not just attacking," she whispered.
Rayan frowned.
"What?"
"It's analyzing me," Ava said.
A pause.
"Learning."
The entity spoke again—
"Subject adaptation exceeds predicted parameters."
Ava clenched her fists.
"Good."
The entity tilted its head.
"Adjustment initiated."
Suddenly—
The cables along its body lit up.
Brighter.
Stronger.
Ava's eyes widened.
"It's boosting itself—"
Rayan didn't wait.
"Then we don't let it finish."
He fired again—
Aiming for the core.
This time—
The bullets slowed mid-air.
Then dropped.
Ava froze.
"…No way."
The entity's voice echoed—
"Control restored."
Ava felt it instantly.
The system—
Was coming back.
Stronger.
Deeper.
Inside her head—
The pressure returned.
Worse than before.
She dropped to one knee.
Rayan turned.
"Ava!"
She grabbed her head.
"It's… reconnecting…"
The entity stepped closer.
"Subject reintegration required."
Ava shook her head violently.
"No—"
"Resistance unnecessary."
Rayan stepped in front of her.
"Back off."
The entity didn't stop.
"Obstacle detected."
Rayan smirked slightly.
"Yeah. That's me again."
He charged forward—
But the entity moved faster.
It struck him—
Hard.
Rayan flew back—
Slamming into the wall.
Ava screamed—
"Rayan!"
He didn't get up.
For a second—
Everything inside Ava stopped.
Then—
It broke.
Not control.
Emotion.
Something deeper.
Something raw.
"Don't…"
Her voice shook.
"Don't touch him."
The entity paused.
Then—
"Emotional interference detected."
Ava stood slowly.
Her body trembling—
But not from fear.
From something building.
"You don't get to decide what matters to me," she said.
The entity responded—
"Emotions are irrelevant to function."
Ava smiled slightly.
"That's where you're wrong."
The pressure in her head surged—
But this time—
She didn't fight it.
She turned it.
Redirected it.
Used it.
Inside—
The system lit up again.
But differently.
Not as control.
As energy.
Ava stepped forward.
"You built a system to control me…"
A pause.
"…but you forgot one thing."
The entity tilted its head.
"Clarify."
Ava's eyes burned.
"I feel."
And then—
She released it.
The ground shook violently.
The air exploded outward.
The entity staggered for the first time.
Rayan, still on the ground, forced his eyes open.
"…Ava…"
She stood there—
Not overwhelmed anymore.
Not confused.
Focused.
In control.
The entity recalibrated.
"Unknown variable detected."
Ava stepped closer.
"You wanted to reset me?"
A pause.
"Try again."
The entity charged.
This time—
Faster than ever.
Ava didn't move.
At the last second—
She raised her hand.
And stopped it.
Not physically.
Mentally.
The cables froze.
The system glitched.
The entity struggled—
But couldn't move forward.
Ava's voice dropped—
"You're still connected."
A pause.
"…and now I'm inside your system too."
The entity's voice distorted.
"Control conflict detected."
Ava pushed harder.
"Disconnect."
The cables sparked violently.
The lights dimmed.
The entity dropped to one knee.
Rayan stared in disbelief.
"…She's actually doing it."
Ava's breathing became heavier.
"It's resisting…"
Rayan forced himself up.
"Then finish it!"
Ava shook her head.
"No."
Rayan blinked.
"What?"
Ava's voice softened—
"I won't destroy it."
The entity looked up slowly.
"Clarify."
Ava stepped closer.
"I'm ending control."
Silence.
The system pulsed—
Then—
Cracked.
Not broken.
Released.
The cables went dark.
The glow in its eyes faded.
The massive entity—
Stopped moving.
Completely.
Ava lowered her hand slowly.
The pressure vanished.
Inside her head—
Silence.
For the first time—
Real silence.
Rayan walked toward her carefully.
"…Ava?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Then—
She turned.
And smiled slightly.
"I'm still me."
Rayan exhaled.
"Good. Because that was… terrifying."
Ava looked back at the fallen entity.
"It's not over."
Rayan followed her gaze.
"…Yeah. I figured."
Ava's voice dropped.
"This was just control."
A pause.
"Now we find who built it."
Rayan nodded slowly.
"Then we end it."
Ava didn't respond.
Because deep down—
She knew—
Ending it—
Would cost something.
And next time—
It might not be just control on the line.
