Chapter 26 - The Ones Who Never Show Themselves

For a moment—

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Ava stood still.

Her hand slowly lowering.

The massive entity in front of her—

Motionless.

Not destroyed.

Not active.

Just… empty.

Rayan walked closer carefully.

Every step measured.

Every breath controlled.

"…Is it over?" he asked.

Ava didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes were still locked on the fallen figure.

"No," she said finally.

Rayan sighed.

"Yeah… I expected that."

A pause.

Ava turned slightly.

"But something changed."

Rayan raised an eyebrow.

"Define 'something.'"

Ava took a slow breath.

"I can't feel the system anymore."

Silence.

Rayan looked at her.

"…At all?"

She shook her head.

"Not like before."

A pause.

"It's like…" she searched for words.

"…a door closed."

Rayan frowned.

"That doesn't sound bad."

Ava looked at him.

"It also means something bigger opened."

Silence.

Rayan didn't like that.

Not one bit.

"Bigger how?" he asked.

Ava's voice dropped.

"Before, I was connected to their system."

A pause.

"Now… I think they're directly aware of me."

Rayan's expression hardened.

"Great. So we just went from hidden problem to main target."

Ava didn't deny it.

"Exactly."

A beat.

Then—

Rayan suddenly staggered.

Ava turned instantly.

"Rayan!"

He grabbed his side.

Blood.

Ava rushed to him.

"You're hurt—why didn't you say anything?!"

Rayan gave a weak smirk.

"I thought the giant killer robot was a bigger issue."

Ava pressed her hand against the wound.

"Shut up."

He winced.

"Okay… yeah, that hurts."

Ava's voice softened.

"You're losing blood."

Rayan looked at her.

"I've had worse."

She didn't smile.

"Not this time."

Silence.

For the first time—

Fear showed in her eyes.

Rayan noticed.

"…Hey," he said quietly.

She looked up.

"I'm not going anywhere," he added.

Ava shook her head.

"You don't get to promise that."

Rayan paused.

"…Fair."

Ava took a deep breath.

"We need to move. Now."

Rayan nodded.

"Yeah… I agree with that."

He tried to stand.

Failed.

Ava caught him.

"I've got you."

Rayan looked at her.

"You always say that."

Ava replied softly—

"And this time, I mean it."

They started moving.

Slow.

Careful.

Behind them—

The entity remained still.

But something about it felt wrong.

Like it wasn't finished.

Ava glanced back once.

"…It's not dead."

Rayan didn't turn.

"Good. I'd be worried if it was that easy."

They reached the exit.

Outside—

The air felt different.

Heavier.

Like the world itself had changed.

Ava stopped.

Rayan frowned.

"What now?"

She looked ahead.

"They're watching."

Rayan followed her gaze.

Empty streets.

Broken buildings.

Silence.

"Who?" he asked.

Ava whispered—

"The ones behind all of this."

A pause.

"They've been watching the whole time."

Rayan's grip tightened.

"Then let them."

Ava looked at him.

"You're not afraid?"

Rayan gave a tired smile.

"I'm always afraid."

A pause.

"I just don't let it stop me."

Ava almost smiled.

"Good answer."

Suddenly—

A faint sound.

Ava froze.

Rayan tensed.

"You hear that?"

She nodded.

"…Drones."

Rayan looked up.

Tiny black shapes moving across the sky.

Scanning.

Searching.

"For us?" he asked.

Ava answered—

"For me."

Rayan exhaled slowly.

"Of course."

Ava's voice turned serious.

"They're adapting fast."

Rayan replied—

"So do we."

Ava shook her head.

"No… they're not just adapting."

A pause.

"They're predicting."

Silence.

Rayan didn't like that.

"…Then we stop being predictable."

Ava looked at him.

"How?"

Rayan smiled slightly.

"We go somewhere they don't expect."

Ava raised an eyebrow.

"Which is?"

Rayan's voice dropped.

"The place they think no one would go back to."

Ava froze.

"…The facility."

Rayan nodded.

"Exactly."

Ava stared at him.

"That's insane."

Rayan shrugged.

"Yeah. That's why it works."

Ava hesitated.

"That place… it's where everything started."

Rayan met her eyes.

"And where it ends."

Silence.

Ava took a deep breath.

"…Fine."

Rayan smirked.

"Glad you agree."

Ava added—

"But this time… we don't run."

Rayan nodded.

"This time, we hunt."

A faint smile crossed Ava's face.

But it didn't last.

Because deep inside—

She felt something.

Watching.

Waiting.

And then—

A voice.

Not outside.

Inside.

"You shouldn't have disconnected."

Ava froze.

Rayan noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Ava whispered—

"They're still here…"

Rayan's expression darkened.

"…In your head?"

Ava nodded slowly.

"Not all of them."

A pause.

"Just one."

Silence.

Rayan asked carefully—

"…The one in charge?"

Ava's voice dropped.

"Yes."

The voice returned—

"You were never meant to be free."

Ava clenched her fists.

"I don't care what you meant."

Rayan stepped closer.

"Don't engage it."

Ava shook her head.

"I have to."

Silence.

Then she spoke—

"I'm coming for you."

A pause.

Then—

A quiet laugh.

"I know."

The connection cut.

Ava exhaled slowly.

Rayan looked at her.

"That didn't sound good."

Ava replied—

"It wasn't meant to."

A long pause.

Then—

She looked ahead.

Eyes sharp.

Determined.

"This isn't about survival anymore."

Rayan nodded.

"I figured."

Ava finished—

"This is war."
