Chapter 28 - The Ones Who Didn’t Survive

The alarm didn't stop.

It screamed.

Red lights flooded the entire facility.

Ava didn't move.

Her eyes were locked on the man standing in front of her.

"You planned this," she said quietly.

The man smiled.

"Of course."

Rayan stepped closer to Ava, his voice low.

"We need to leave. Now."

Ava didn't respond.

Instead, she asked—

"What did you do to them?"

The man tilted his head.

"Which ones?"

Ava's fists clenched.

"The others. The ones like me."

Silence.

Then—

The man let out a soft breath.

"They weren't like you."

Ava's voice hardened.

"They were human."

The man's smile faded slightly.

"They were attempts."

Rayan's grip tightened on his weapon.

"Attempts at what?"

The man looked at him briefly.

"Perfection."

Ava stepped forward.

"And I'm your perfect version?"

The man's eyes returned to her.

"You're the only one who adapted."

Ava's heart pounded.

"Adapted to what?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He pressed something on the console beside him.

The ground beneath them vibrated.

Rayan cursed.

"I don't like that."

Ava didn't look away.

"Answer me."

The man spoke calmly—

"To control."

A pause.

"And to break it."

Ava froze.

"…What?"

The man's voice dropped.

"We didn't just build a system to control subjects."

A pause.

"We built something that could resist it."

Rayan frowned.

"That makes no sense."

The man glanced at him.

"It makes perfect sense."

Ava whispered—

"…A failsafe."

The man smiled slightly.

"Exactly."

Silence.

Ava's voice trembled—

"You made me to fight your own system?"

The man nodded.

"In case it evolved beyond us."

Rayan's expression darkened.

"So you created a weapon."

The man corrected him—

"No."

He looked directly at Ava.

"We created a choice."

Before Ava could respond—

A loud metallic crash echoed from deeper inside the facility.

Then another.

And another.

Ava's body went tense.

"…They're waking up."

Rayan turned sharply.

"Who?"

The man answered calmly—

"The ones who didn't survive."

Silence.

Ava's chest tightened.

"…What do you mean 'didn't survive'?"

The man didn't hesitate.

"They failed."

A pause.

"But failure doesn't mean useless."

The lights flickered violently.

Then—

A sound.

Dragging.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

Rayan stepped in front of Ava again.

"I'm guessing those are the failed ones."

Ava nodded slowly.

"They're still connected…"

The man added—

"Partially."

Ava's eyes snapped to him.

"You kept them alive?"

The man's expression didn't change.

"We preserved them."

Ava's voice shook with anger.

"They're not things!"

The man looked at her calmly.

"They stopped being human long ago."

Before she could respond—

Something emerged from the darkness.

Rayan's grip tightened.

"…Oh, that's not good."

A figure stepped into the red light.

But it wasn't like the controlled units.

Its body—

Distorted.

Parts mechanical.

Parts human.

Eyes—

Empty.

Ava's breath caught.

"…No…"

Another one appeared.

Then another.

More.

Dozens.

Rayan whispered—

"…We're surrounded."

Ava stepped forward slowly.

"I can feel them…"

Rayan grabbed her arm.

"Don't."

Ava shook her head.

"They're not like the others."

A pause.

"They're broken."

The creatures moved closer.

Slow.

Unstable.

One of them twitched violently.

Then lunged.

Rayan fired instantly.

The shot hit—

But it kept moving.

"Of course," Rayan muttered.

Ava raised her hand.

"Wait—"

The creature froze mid-motion.

Its body shaking.

Ava frowned.

"I can't control them fully…"

The man watched with interest.

"They don't respond to commands anymore."

Ava's voice dropped.

"Then what do they respond to?"

The man answered—

"Instinct."

Suddenly—

All of them rushed forward.

Rayan shouted—

"Run!"

Ava didn't argue this time.

They moved fast.

Dodging.

Turning.

The creatures slammed into walls, into each other—

But kept coming.

"They don't stop!" Rayan yelled.

Ava's eyes scanned everything.

"They're not thinking—just reacting!"

One creature grabbed Rayan's arm.

He slammed it against the wall—

But another one lunged.

Ava reacted instantly—

She sent a pulse.

The air cracked.

Several creatures flew back.

Rayan exhaled.

"…Okay. That works."

Ava shook her head.

"Not enough."

The man's voice echoed behind them—

"You can't save them."

Ava turned sharply.

"I'm not trying to save them."

A pause.

"I'm trying to stop this."

The man smiled.

"Then you'll have to choose."

Ava's expression hardened.

"Choose what?"

The man's voice dropped—

"Them… or yourself."

Silence.

The creatures moved again.

Closer.

Faster.

Rayan looked at Ava.

"We don't have time for this."

Ava whispered—

"I know."

Another creature lunged—

She stopped it mid-air—

But more kept coming.

Her breathing became heavier.

"I can't hold all of them…"

Rayan stepped beside her.

"Then we break through."

Ava nodded.

Together—

They moved.

Rayan clearing a path.

Ava pushing back the creatures.

Step by step—

They advanced.

Until—

They reached another door.

Rayan slammed it shut behind them.

Heavy breathing filled the room.

Silence.

Temporary.

Ava leaned against the wall.

"They're still out there."

Rayan nodded.

"Yeah. And they're not giving up."

A pause.

Ava looked at him.

"You're getting weaker."

Rayan smirked faintly.

"I prefer 'strategically tired.'"

Ava didn't smile.

"This isn't funny."

Rayan looked at her seriously.

"I know."

Silence.

Then—

Ava spoke softly—

"I can end this."

Rayan frowned.

"How?"

Ava's voice dropped.

"By shutting down the entire system."

Rayan's eyes narrowed.

"And what happens to you?"

Ava didn't answer.

That was the answer.

Rayan shook his head immediately.

"No."

Ava looked at him.

"It's the only way."

Rayan stepped closer.

"No, it's not."

Ava's voice broke slightly—

"You don't understand—"

"I understand enough," Rayan cut in.

Silence.

Ava whispered—

"If I don't do this… they'll keep coming."

Rayan replied—

"Then we keep fighting."

Ava shook her head.

"You might not survive that."

Rayan smiled faintly.

"Wasn't planning to."

Ava stared at him.

"…Why?"

Rayan's voice softened—

"Because you're worth it."

Silence.

Ava's chest tightened.

Before she could respond—

The door behind them slammed.

Hard.

Cracking.

Rayan turned.

"They're breaking through."

Ava's eyes sharpened.

"Then we move."

Rayan nodded.

"Together."

Ava didn't argue.

This time—

She agreed.

Because for the first time—

She wasn't just fighting for answers.

She was fighting for him.

And somewhere deep inside—

That scared her more than anything.
