Chapter 24 - The Thing That Controls Everything (Part 1)

"Don't move."

Rayan's voice was low.

Sharp.

Ava didn't move anyway.

She couldn't.

Because whatever stood in the distance—

Was not human.

The ground trembled again.

Slow.

Heavy.

Ava whispered—

"…What is that?"

Rayan didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't know.

But he had a feeling.

And it wasn't good.

"That," he finally said, "is not something we can fight directly."

Ava's eyes stayed locked forward.

"…It's connected, isn't it?"

Rayan glanced at her.

"You can feel it?"

Ava nodded slowly.

"It's like…" she paused, searching for the word.

"…a core."

Silence.

Rayan cursed quietly.

"Of course it is."

Ava frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Rayan's voice dropped.

"It means everything we just shut down…"

A pause.

"…was just the surface."

The massive figure moved again.

Closer.

Now they could see it clearly.

Not fully human.

Not fully machine.

Something in between.

Tall.

Armored.

Connected by cables that pulsed faintly with light.

Ava felt it immediately.

"It's controlling them," she whispered.

Rayan nodded.

"Or it was."

The figure stopped.

And then—

It turned its head.

Directly toward them.

Ava's breath caught.

"…It sees us."

Rayan grabbed her arm.

"We need to go. Now."

Ava didn't move.

"I don't think running will work this time."

Rayan's jaw tightened.

"It always works better than dying."

Ava shook her head slowly.

"No."

She stepped forward.

Rayan pulled her back instantly.

"What are you doing?!"

Ava looked at him.

"If that thing is the source…"

A pause.

"Then running just delays this."

Rayan stared at her.

"You're not ready for that."

Ava's expression didn't change.

"Neither is it."

Before he could argue—

The figure moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

It was suddenly much closer.

Rayan pushed Ava aside.

"Down!"

A shockwave hit.

The ground cracked beneath them.

Ava rolled, barely avoiding impact.

Rayan hit the ground hard.

Dust filled the air.

Silence—

Then footsteps.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Ava looked up.

The figure stood there now.

Towering.

Its eyes—

Glowing faintly.

It spoke.

"Primary subject detected."

Ava's body went cold.

Rayan stood up slowly.

"Stay behind me."

Ava didn't listen.

She stepped forward again.

"I'm not your subject anymore."

The figure paused.

Then—

"Incorrect."

Ava clenched her fists.

"No."

The figure tilted its head.

"Control link disrupted," it said.

A pause.

"Reconnection required."

Ava felt the pressure instantly.

Stronger than before.

Inside her head—

Something tried to pull.

Command.

Force.

She staggered.

Rayan caught her.

"Fight it!"

Ava gritted her teeth.

"It's stronger…"

The figure stepped closer.

"Compliance will be enforced."

Rayan raised his weapon and fired.

The bullets hit—

And did nothing.

Rayan swore.

"Yeah… I figured."

The figure raised its hand.

Energy gathered.

Ava felt it.

Danger.

Immediate.

"Rayan—move!"

He didn't hesitate.

He pulled her down—

The blast tore through the space behind them.

Walls shattered.

Air exploded.

Ava coughed.

"This thing isn't just controlling…"

She looked up.

"It's designed to reset."

Rayan frowned.

"…Reset what?"

Ava's voice dropped.

"Me."

Silence.

The figure stepped forward again.

"Subject instability detected."

A pause.

"Initiating correction."

Ava stood up slowly.

Her breathing steadied.

"No."

The pressure hit again.

Stronger.

This time—

She didn't fall.

She stood.

Eyes focused.

"I told you…"

The air shifted.

"I decide."

The figure paused.

For the first time—

There was a delay.

Processing.

Rayan noticed.

"…It's reacting."

Ava stepped forward.

"I'm not part of your system anymore."

The figure responded—

"All assets remain within system boundaries."

Ava shook her head.

"Not this one."

She raised her hand.

The air around the figure flickered.

Its cables sparked.

Rayan stepped back.

"…Ava, be careful—"

Too late.

The figure moved.

Faster than before.

It grabbed her.

Lifted her off the ground.

Rayan shouted—

"Ava!"

She struggled—

But its grip was too strong.

"Resistance detected," it said.

Ava gasped.

Inside her head—

The system roared.

Command signals flooding in.

Overwhelming.

"Submit."

"No—"

"Submit."

"I won't—"

The pressure increased.

Everything blurred.

Then—

A memory.

That same man.

"You choose."

Ava's eyes snapped open.

"…I choose."

The pressure cracked.

Not fully—

But enough.

She looked directly at the figure.

"You don't control me."

The figure paused.

"Correction required."

Ava smiled faintly.

"Try."

And then—

Everything broke again.
