Chapter 21 - The Power You Can’t Control

"Ava…?"

Rayan's voice was low.

Careful.

Like he was afraid of the answer.

Ava didn't respond.

Her eyes were still locked on the figures in front of her.

But something had changed.

Not just fear.

Not confusion.

Awareness.

The air around her felt… different.

Charged.

The lead figure stepped forward again.

"Subject response detected."

Ava tilted her head slightly.

"…Stop calling me that."

The voice replied instantly—

"Designation remains unchanged."

Rayan moved closer to her.

"Ava, listen to me."

No response.

"Ava."

Slowly—

She turned her head.

Her eyes met his.

For a second—

He didn't recognize her.

"Say my name again," she said quietly.

Rayan blinked.

"…Ava."

A pause.

Then she nodded.

"Good."

Her voice softened—

Just a little.

But something underneath it—

Was not soft at all.

The lead figure raised its device again.

"Initiating retrieval."

Ava looked back at them.

"No."

The device pulsed.

Pain shot through her head.

Ava staggered.

Rayan caught her instantly.

"I've got you."

She gripped his arm tightly.

"They're trying to… control something…"

Rayan's voice sharpened.

"Fight it."

Ava squeezed her eyes shut.

"I don't know how!"

The figure spoke again—

"Neural override incomplete. Increasing signal."

The pulse intensified.

Ava screamed.

The lights above shattered.

The ground vibrated.

Rayan's eyes widened.

"…Ava, stop!"

But she couldn't.

The pain—

Was turning into something else.

Something stronger.

Ava dropped to her knees.

Breathing hard.

"I can hear them…" she whispered.

Rayan knelt beside her.

"Who?"

She looked up.

Terrified.

"…All of them."

Silence.

The figures paused.

The lead one spoke again—

"Unexpected synchronization detected."

Rayan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Ava answered.

"They're… connected."

She pressed her hands against her head.

"They're not thinking individually… it's like… one system."

Rayan cursed.

"A hive."

The lead figure tilted its head.

"Correction: unified command structure."

Ava laughed weakly.

"That's worse."

Another pulse hit.

This time—

Ava didn't scream.

She stood up.

Slowly.

Her breathing steadied.

Her eyes changed again.

"Stop," she said.

The figures froze.

Rayan blinked.

"…What did you just do?"

Ava didn't look at him.

"I didn't… do anything."

The lead figure twitched.

"Command conflict detected."

Ava stepped forward.

"Stop," she repeated.

The figures stepped back.

Rayan stared.

"…Ava."

She turned slightly.

"I can feel their system."

Her voice was calmer now.

Controlled.

"They're not just following orders…"

She paused.

"They are the order."

The lead figure's voice distorted slightly.

"Control breach. Initiating containment."

Ava frowned.

"…No."

The word hit like pressure.

The figures froze again.

One of them dropped to one knee.

Rayan stepped back slightly.

"…This is new."

Ava whispered—

"I can shut them down."

Rayan's eyes snapped to her.

"No."

She looked at him.

"Why not?"

"Because we don't know what happens if you do."

Ava's expression hardened.

"And we do know what happens if I don't."

Silence.

The lead figure suddenly raised its weapon.

Rayan reacted instantly—

He fired.

The figure staggered.

But didn't fall.

"See?" Ava said quietly. "They don't stop."

Rayan reloaded.

"Then we run."

Ava shook her head.

"No."

"Ava—"

"I'm done running."

The words were different now.

Stronger.

Final.

Another figure moved toward them.

Ava raised her hand.

It stopped.

Mid-step.

Rayan watched closely.

"What are you doing?"

Ava answered softly—

"I'm taking control."

The figure trembled.

Its weapon dropped.

Then—

It collapsed.

The others froze completely.

Silence.

Rayan looked around.

"…They're offline?"

Ava shook her head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"They're waiting."

"For what?" Rayan asked.

Ava looked straight ahead.

"…For a higher command."

And then—

A voice echoed.

Not from the soldiers.

Not from the room.

From everywhere.

"Ava."

Her body went still.

Rayan turned sharply.

"What was that?"

Ava whispered—

"…Him."

The voice continued—

"You've grown faster than expected."

Ava's hands clenched.

"Show yourself."

"Not yet," the voice replied.

Rayan raised his gun.

"I'm done with voices."

The voice ignored him.

"You were never meant to awaken like this," it said.

Ava stepped forward.

"Then maybe you designed me wrong."

A pause.

Then—

A quiet chuckle.

"No," the voice said.

"We designed you perfectly."

Ava's expression darkened.

"Then why can I fight you?"

The answer came instantly—

"Because you were designed to."

Silence.

Rayan frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

Ava whispered—

"…It does."

She looked at him.

"They didn't just create a subject."

A pause.

"They created a counter."

Rayan's eyes widened.

"…A weapon against themselves?"

The voice confirmed—

"Correct."

Ava felt something shift inside her.

Not confusion anymore.

Purpose.

"You made me to fight you?" she asked.

The voice replied—

"To control what we cannot predict."

Ava laughed softly.

"And now you can't control me."

Silence.

Then—

"Not yet."

Suddenly—

All the figures reactivated at once.

Rayan cursed.

"Okay, now we run."

Ava grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

He looked at her.

"What now?"

Ava's voice dropped.

"I can feel something else."

Rayan frowned.

"Something worse?"

Ava nodded slowly.

"…Something bigger."

The ground trembled.

Far away—

A loud metallic sound echoed.

Rayan looked toward the exit.

"We're out of time."

Ava turned to him.

For a moment—

She looked like herself again.

Not the weapon.

Not the experiment.

Just Ava.

"Do you trust me?" she asked.

Rayan didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Ava nodded.

"Then don't stop me."

Before he could respond—

She stepped forward.

The soldiers moved.

Everything was about to explode again.

And this time—

It wouldn't be the same.
