The air between them got sharp.
Kael stood still calm his face hidden. He was wide awake. Across from him Veyron Kade didn't attack. He just watched, like he was testing something
"You're not afraid " Veyron said, his voice low and amused.
Kael didn't answer.
He didn't need to say anything.
Silence was powerful.
Veyron exhaled softly. Shook his head. "Most people try to run or pretend to be brave. You're not doing either."
A little ripple of Aether moved through the space.
It wasn't enough to trigger alarms enough to probe.
Kael felt it touch him searching and measuring.
He didn't resist directly.
He just shifted a bit letting the flow pass through him dispersing it without confrontation.
Veyron's eyes narrowed.
"…You're careful " he said.
Kael's voice was steady. "You're wasting time."
Veyron laughed quietly.
"Am I?" he said. "I think I've learned a lot already."
He took another step forward.
The distance between them got shorter.
The pressure got stronger.
This time it wasn't subtle.
Aether gathered around Veyron not erupting wildly but condensing into something dangerous.
Kael recognized it away.
"…Experienced " he thought.
The fragments inside him stirred a bit observing the situation.
Veyron raised his hand. The air warped.
A compression field.
Light, controlled, but enough to test resistance.
Kael felt the pressure settle against him pressing inward.
He didn't step back.
He didn't flare his power.
He just shifted his stance a bit redirecting the pressure.
Veyron's smile faded a bit.
"…You adapt quickly " he said.
Kael's response was immediate. "You're predictable."
For a moment the air was still.
Then Veyron laughed.
"Good " he said. "Very good."
The next movement was fast.
Sharp.
Without warning.
Veyron's figure blurred as he stepped forward his hand moving toward Kael's shoulder.
A test.
A capture attempt.
Kael moved at the time. His body shifted to the side his hand rising to redirect Veyron's path. The two passed each other.
Cleanly.
Effortlessly.
Not without consequence.
A faint ripple spread through the space where their Aether had brushed.
Both stopped.
Both turned.
For the first time the air between them carried something more than curiosity.
It carried recognition.
Veyron's eyes had changed.
The casual amusement was gone.
Replaced by focus.
"…You're not just hiding " he said slowly. "You're trained."
Kael didn't deny it.
He didn't confirm it either.
He just spoke calmly. "You're still in the way."
That was enough.
The next shift in the atmosphere was immediate.
No more testing.
No more light probing.
The Aether around Veyron intensified, condensing further.
This was not a test anymore.
This was pressure.
Real pressure.
Kael felt it instantly.
This time he didn't simply redirect.
He moved through it. Forward, directly toward Veyron.
The decision was immediate.
Clear and Calculated.
Veyron's eyes widened a bit.
Not from fear but from surprise.
Kael stepped into the field without hesitation.
His movement was precise his control absolute.
For a moment the balance shifted.
Veyron reacted quickly adjusting his stance.
Kael didn't follow through with an attack.
He just stopped.
Right at the edge of Veyron's range.
Close enough to act. Choosing not to.
"…This isn't necessary " Kael said.
Veyron held his position his gaze locked onto Kael's.
"…You think you can walk away?" he asked.
Kael's answer was simple. "Yes."
For a second nothing moved.
Then a subtle shift passed through the surroundings.
A distant fluctuation. Barely noticeable was present.
Veyron felt it.
So did Kael.
It was Exchange security.
Not close but aware.
Veyron exhaled slowly the tension in his stance easing a bit.
"…Unfortunate timing " he said.
Kael stepped back.
Not retreating, not fleeing, just disengaging.
Veyron watched him carefully his expression returning to that controlled smile.
"…This isn't over " he said quietly.
Kael turned.
"…It never is " he replied.
Then he left.
No rush, no panic, calm movement as he disappeared back into the structured paths of the exchange.
Behind him Veyron remained where he stood his gaze fixed on the space Kael had just occupied.
For a moment he said nothing.
Then he smiled.
Not lightly not casually,. With intent.
"…Now this is interesting " he said.
He turned slowly his thoughts already moving ahead already adjusting, already planning.
Because what he had just encountered was not a target.
It was something more complex. Something worth pursuing.
By the time Kael returned to the academy grounds the night had settled into its quiet rhythm but his thoughts remained active.
"…He's dangerous " he acknowledged internally.
Not because of strength but because of control, experience and intent.
That made him unpredictable.
That made him a problem.
"…Then I adapt " Kael decided.
Not by retreating. But by refining, improving and staying ahead.
The morning the academy felt normal again on the surface.
Students trained.
Classes continued.
Voices filled the air.
Riven stretched lazily as he walked beside the group.
"I don't know why. I feel like something big is about to happen."
Mira nodded immediately.
"Same."
Tarin glanced at them.
"That feeling is based on nothing."
Lyra said nothing.
Her gaze shifted briefly to Kael.
"…Not nothing " she thought.
Kael walked beside them calm as always.
"…It already has " he said quietly.
Riven blinked.
"What?"
Kael shook his head slightly.
"…Nothing."
Mira frowned.
"You're being weird again."
Riven sighed.
"He's always weird."
Tarin ignored them.
Lyra didn't.
She watched carefully.
Because something had changed.
Not visibly not obviously. Undeniably.
Somewhere beyond the academy's awareness within the deeper layers of the exchange and the shadows that moved between them a new game had begun.
A game of patience of control of pursuit.
Now both sides were aware.
Which meant one thing.
This was no longer about finding the Void Artisan.
It was, about who would reach the truth and who would control it when they did.
