Chapter 27 - Shadows That Begin to Move

The academy was no just buzzing with excitement. It was restless.

What had once been curiosity had now turned into something sharper something more focused. It had intent. The name "Void Artisan" no longer felt like a rumor. It had weight. It had presence. It had influence.. Wherever influence gathered something else always followed.

Desire. Greed. Opportunity.. Inevitably Danger.

Kael walked through the academy courtyard. He had his calm expression. His presence was quiet. His movements were unremarkable. To everyone around him he was still the person. He was a student who spoke little. He observed more. He did not stand out beyond being slightly competent. Riven was talking loudly beside him. Mira was reacting to everything with energy. Tarin remained grounded. Lyra watched everything without appearing to.

"You know what I've decided?" Riven said. He sounded confident. His arms were crossed.

Mira looked at him. "What?"

"I'm going to find the Void Artisan " Riven said.

Mira nodded. "Good plan."

Riven continued, "And when I do I'm offering my services."

Tarin raised an eyebrow. "What services?"

Riven paused. Then he said, "I'll figure that out later."

Mira sighed. "That's not how that works."

Kael remained silent.

Lyra glanced at him. Then she looked away.

She thought, "...Closer than they think."

Far from the laughter and light conversation of the academy something else was moving. Deep within the exchange beyond the halls and controlled chambers there was another room. It was hidden. It was sealed. It was watching.

A man stood there. His figure was partially obscured by shadow. His posture was relaxed. His eyes were sharp with calculation. This man felt different from Cassian. He felt less refined. More dangerous.

The man murmured, "Void Artisan."

He had a report in his hand. It had details of transactions, timings, materials used and auction outcomes.

"Two appearances " he said. His voice was low and It was thoughtful.

He tapped the paper. "Too clean."

Behind him another figure stood silently. The man asked, "What do you think?"

The second figure spoke in a tone. "Someone skilled."

The man chuckled. "That's obvious. This is someone hiding."

He turned slightly. His face was under the light. His expression was calm.. His eyes carried something sharper. Something colder.

The man continued, "People who hide power either fear something or are planning something."

The room fell silent. Then the man said, "Find him."

That night Kael moved again. The Void Artisan returned. His presence shifted into something unreadable. He stepped into the exchange through the controlled path. The guards did not question him. The formations did not react. Everything recognized him now not as a person. As a role. A position. A value.

Cassian greeted him with an expression.. There was something else behind it. Awareness.

"You've attracted attention " Cassian said.

Kael took his seat. "That was expected."

Cassian nodded. "Yes.. Not just from the academy."

Kaels gaze sharpened. "Explain."

Cassian hesitated. Then he said, "There are individuals within the exchange who do not operate under structure. They observe. They take interest.. When something valuable appears they act."

Kael did not respond immediately.. Internally he noted, "...A variable."

Cassian asked, "Can you handle it?"

Kaels reply was calm. "Yes."

Cassian studied him. Then he nodded. "Good. Because your next delivery will not be as simple."

Kael stood. Not to leave, but to act.

That night within the outer section of the exchange pathways a quiet transaction point had been prepared. Kael arrived first. He was silent. He was still. He was waiting.

The air shifted. Someone else entered. A man stepped into the light. His expression was calm. His posture was relaxed. His presence was controlled. Too controlled.

His eyes locked onto Kael. He said, "So you're the one."

Kael did not respond.

The man smiled. "No greeting? No introduction? That's disappointing."

Kaels voice was calm. "State your purpose."

The man smiled wider. "My name is Veyron Kade. I take interest in things.. Right now you're the most valuable thing in this academy."

The air grew heavier. Not with power. With intent.

Kael remained still. "You're not part of the exchange " he said.

Veyron chuckled. "No. I'm not bound by rules."

He took another step forward. "And that makes things easier."

The implication was clear. Too clear.

Kaels gaze sharpened. "You want control " he said.

Veyron tilted his head. "Control, cooperation, ownership... Call it what you like."

Kael said, "No."

Simple. Immediate. Absolute.

Veyron stopped. Then he smiled again. "I was hoping you'd say that."

The air shifted. Aether moved. Sharp. Controlled. Dangerous.

Kael felt it instantly. He thought, "...So this is how it is."

Veyron raised his hand. He was not attacking yet. Ready.

"People like you don't stay hidden forever " he said.

His eyes sharpened. "And when they're found they either become useful or they disappear."

Silence fell. Heavy. Still.

Then Kael moved. Not back. Not away. But forward.

His presence remained calm. Unshaken.

"I don't do either " he said.

For the time Veyrons expression shifted. Just slightly. It was interest. Real interest.

Veyron murmured, "Good."

Because this was no longer, about control. It had become something. Something dangerous. A confrontation.

The shadows had begun to move.. This was only the beginning.
