Chapter 32 - The First Crack

The academy was on edge like something was shifting under the surface. People were talking and moving carefully, and the air felt uneasy. It was not about being curious or competing with each other anymore. Something was off.

This all happened in the afternoon when the training grounds were busy. Students were testing themselves. Comparing their progress. They were also showing off anything related to the Void Artisan. One student, Coren got everyones attention when he got a weapon from the exchange. It was not made by the Void Artisan. It was clearly inspired by his work. The weapon was better. It had a reputation that made people want it.

"Watch this " Coren said, raising the blade. Aether started flowing through it. People gathered around. Kael and his friends arrived in time to see this. Riven leaned forward looking interested. Mira nodded,. She looked cautious. Tarin crossed his arms looking concerned. Lyra said nothing. She was watching everything around Coren.

Coren took a breath and pushed more Aether into the weapon. At first it worked well, people were impressed.. Then something went wrong. The flow of Aether got unstable. The structure of the weapon collapsed. It happened fast. The weapon cracked under the pressure. A surge of Aether burst out and Coren was thrown backward.

The crowd panicked,. Kael moved quickly. He stepped forward his eyes sharp. He calculated the flow of Aether and he realized that the structure was disrupted. It was not a simple failure. It was interference. Something had forced the collapse.

Kael raised his hand and a controlled ripple of Aether moved out. It redirected the energy away from the crowd reducing its impact. Coren hit the ground hard. He was shaken, confused. Did not understand what had happened.

People started talking trying to figure out what had happened. Kaelen Drax pushed forward looking sharp and irritated. He grabbed the weapon and examined it closely. "This is not a failure " he said. "The structure was forced apart."

Seris Vale appeared, her gaze analytical. She sensed the remnants of Aether in the weapon. "There's a disruption pattern " she said quietly. "External interference." Elric Thane stepped closer studying the traces left behind. "Not random " he added. "Targeted."

People realized that this was not an accident. Kael stood still his expression calm. His mind was already moving ahead. He thought that someone was testing them. Riven exhaled sharply looking concerned. "Why does danger always show up when we're around?" Tarin did not even look at him. "Because you exist."

Mira shook her head focusing on Coren. "Forget that. Is he okay?" Coren was being helped up shaken but not seriously injured. Lyra however was looking at Kael. She had seen him act quickly too precisely. He had understood what was happening before it happened.

Far from the training grounds Veyron Kade stood silently his eyes half-lidded. He was listening to something something subtle. A faint smile touched his lips. "There it is " he murmured. He could feel the result of the incident the disturbance, the correction, the interference.

He did not need to see what had happened. He could feel it. His fingers tapped lightly against the surface beside him as his thoughts aligned. "Precise reaction. Controlled response. No exposure." He paused, then added, "But not invisible."

His eyes opened fully now sharp and focused. "You're closer than I thought." He was talking about Kael. He was certain that he had found what he was looking for.

Back at the training grounds the situation was settling down. The damage had already been done. Doubt had entered, not about the items but about the safety the control and the hidden forces behind everything. Kaelen stood up his grip tightening slightly. "If someone is interfering with crafted items then this isn't just competition anymore." Seris nodded slowly. "It's sabotage." Elric remained calm. His gaze was sharper than before. "Or a test."

That word lingered. A test. Of what? Of whom? Kael turned slightly preparing to leave his expression unchanged, but inside he knew that the line had been crossed. This was no longer a controlled environment. This was no longer safe. Every action would be watched every mistake would. Every reaction would be remembered.

As Kael walked away Lyra's gaze followed him her thoughts aligning into something more dangerous, than suspicion. "If I'm right " she thought. She did not finish the sentence not yet.. She did not need to. Because somewhere else Veyron already had. "Now I'm certain."With that certainty the hunt truly began.
