Chapter 36 - A Choice to Stand Together

The academy was still busy. It felt different now. There was a tension that hung in the air like a silent warning. It had been there for days. Everyone had gotten used to it.

Kael felt it too.. He wasn't the only one anymore. Lyra was different around him now. She was still calm and composed. There was something new in the way she carried herself.

"You're quieter than usual " she said, as they walked through the training grounds.

Kael looked at her briefly. "You say that like I used to talk a lot before."

Lyra smiled slightly. "Let me try again. You're thinking more than usual."

Kael didn't deny it. There were too many things to think about now. Many people watching, too many patterns forming. Every step required thought than before.

Lyra slowed down a bit looking out at the training platforms. Students were pushing themselves hard driven by competition, fear or ambition.

"You don't trust the situation " she said.

Kael responded away. "No."

Lyra nodded, like she expected that. "Good. I don't either."

Her words were clear and simple. No exaggeration, but truth.

Kael exhaled quietly. "Then we have to be careful."

Lyra tilted her head slightly. "We?"

The word hung in the air for a moment. Kael held her gaze.

"You already made that decision " he said.

Lyra didn't look away. "Good " she said softly.

There was no hesitation in her voice. No second thoughts. That meant something to Kael.

That day the academy assigned a task to several groups, including Kael's. They had to maintain stability in a zone where Aether fluctuations had been reported. It seemed routine and no one treated it lightly.

Riven stretched as they walked out of the academy grounds his energy returning a bit. "I'm just saying, if something tries to attack us I'm retiring from being brave."

Mira rolled her eyes. "You were never brave."

"I had potential " Riven said.

Tarin walked ahead focused on the terrain. "Lets focus. This isn't a game."

Riven sighed. "It never is with you."

Kael stayed quiet his senses extended, reading the environment and the flow of Aether.

Lyra noticed. "You're already scanning everything " she said quietly.

Kael didn't deny it. "We're not here for nothing."

Lyra nodded slightly. "Then I'll trust your instincts."

Those words carried weight. Trust, given without hesitation. Kael felt it.

The outer zone was quieter than expected. The Aether felt uneven fluctuating in ways that suggested instability. The ground felt off too reacting faintly under pressure.

"Not normal " Tarin said.

Mira crossed her arms looking uneasy. "It feels like something's waiting."

Riven took a step back. "Why does it always feel like something's waiting?"

Before anyone could respond a disturbance appeared. A ripple of Aether twisted through the air forming into a stable entity that resembled a distorted creature.

"This isn't standard " Tarin said sharply.

The creature moved fast targeting Riven. "Of course it's me!" he shouted as he dodged, stumbling backward.

Tarin engaged the creature with controlled strikes. Each impact seemed to destabilize it further.

Lyras eyes narrowed. "Its adapting."

Kael stepped forward calm and focused. "Its anchored below " he said.

Lyra reacted instantly. "Then we break the anchor."

Kael nodded once. With no hesitation and no delay. They moved together.

The creature lunged again. Lyra held her ground creating an opening. "Now " she said.

Kael moved, his hand touching the ground briefly his Aether slipping beneath the surface.

The effect was immediate. The entity froze, then collapsed. The unstable Aether dissipated into the air leaving behind silence.

For a moment no one spoke. Then Riven dropped to the ground dramatically. "I'm alive. I'm actually alive."

Mira let out a breath. "Barely."

Tarin looked at the spot where the creature had vanished his expression thoughtful. "That wasn't random."

"No " Kael said quietly. "It wasn't."

Lyra turned toward him her gaze steady. "You knew what to do " she said.

Kael met her gaze. "We handled it " he replied.

Lyra held his gaze for a moment longer before a small smile formed. "Yes " she said softly. "We did."

That word lingered. Not just a statement but a choice, a decision to stand together.

As they began to move toward the academy the tension didn't vanish, but something else existed alongside it now, connection, trust, something fragile, but real.

Far away Veyron Kade observed the subtle shifts that others couldn't perceive. "Working together now " he murmured.

His gaze sharpened slightly. "Good."

Because stronger bonds meant reactions.. Clearer reactions meant easier targets.

A faint smile touched his lips. "Lets see how long that lasts."

Back within the fading light of the academy Kael walked beside Lyra, his thoughts quieter than before. Not because the danger had lessened,. Because something, within him had changed. Enough to matter. Enough to make what came next hurt more.
