The academy felt like it could finally breathe again. It had been a while since things had been this calm. The training grounds were not as busy and the corridors were less crowded. The students were not arguing as much. It was like the storm had passed. Nobody was sure if it was really gone or just waiting to come back.
Kael did not think things were safe. He just thought people wanted to believe they were. He walked with the others in the courtyard looking relaxed but still aware of what was going on around him. He felt like someone was watching him not directly. He could sense it.
Lyra walked next to Kael matching his pace easily. She did not ask him if something was wrong because she already knew the answer. "You are still thinking about it " she said quietly.
Kael looked at her. "You are not?" he asked.
Lyra looked up at the sky. "I am. I am trying not to let it bother me all the time." She was not trying to pretend everything was okay. She was just trying to make a choice.
Kael thought about that for a moment. "That is optimistic " he said.
Lyra smiled a little. "That is surviving " she said. Her answer made sense more than Kael wanted to admit.
Nearby Riven was. Then dropped onto a bench. "I have decided I deserve a reward for not dying " he said.
Mira crossed her arms. "You did not do anything " she said.
Riven said, "I survived and that counts." Tarin leaned against a pillar. Said, "You should aim for more than just surviving."
Riven pointed at Tarin. "You should aim for being less serious " he said.
Tarin said, "That is not going to happen." Riven said, "It never does."
Lyra looked at Kael. Said, "You should try to relax too." Kael raised an eyebrow. "Try what?" he asked.
"Relaxing " Lyra said. Kael almost said no. He did not. "I am relaxed " he said.
Riven sat up straight. "That is the concerning thing I have heard all day " he said. Mira sighed. "If that is his relaxed I do not want to see his serious " she said.
Lyra laughed quietly. For a moment everything felt normal. They were students talking after a long day not people standing on the edge of something dangerous.
Kael noticed the sound of Lyra's laugh and the feeling that came with it. He felt his posture ease up a little enough to let the moment exist without analyzing it.
Later the group found out that their last mission was a success. They got a reward, including academy credits and access to a better resource section. It was not a lot. It felt like progress.
Riven was excited. "Finally recognition " he said. "I knew my greatness would be acknowledged." Mira gave him a look. "You hid behind Tarin for most of it " she said.
Riven said, "That was positioning." Tarin did not react. "We earned it " he said. Lyra nodded, looking at Kael briefly. "Some more than others " she said.
Kael ignored that. At least pretended to.
The exchange was quieter than usual when they went in. The atmosphere was. People were moving more deliberately. Kael felt that subtle shift again that misalignment. It was not obvious. It was there.
Lyra noticed the change in Kael's expression. "You feel it again " she said. Kael nodded. "It has not gone away " he said.
Lyras gaze sharpened. "Do you think he is still watching?" she asked. Kael did not hesitate. "Yes " he said.
There was no fear in his voice certainty. Lyra exhaled slowly. And said, "Then we do not give him what he wants." Kael looked at her. "And what does he want?" he asked.
Lyra met his gaze. "A reaction " she said. That answer was simple but correct. Kael thought about it for a moment before nodding. "Then we choose when to give it " he said.
Lyra smiled slightly. "Exactly " she said.
They spent some time looking at the items in the exchange discussing possibilities. For a while it felt almost normal again like they were making progress.
At one point Lyra stopped near a display of artifacts. She picked up a well-crafted piece designed to stabilize Aether disruptions. "It is not flashy " she said, "And it is reliable."
Kael studied it briefly before nodding. "Reliability matters more than appearance " he said. Lyra smiled faintly. "You would say that " she said.
She picked it up turning it slightly in her hands before lowering her voice. "If things get worse we need to be ready " she said.
Kael looked at the artifact for a moment before shifting his gaze to her. "They will " he said.
Lyra did not look surprised just prepared.
As they left the exchange that evening the sky was darkening, casting long shadows across the academy grounds. For a moment everything felt still quiet in a way that might have been peaceful if not for the underlying awareness that it would not last.
Lyra walked beside Kael in silence for a while before speaking. "When this is over " she said softly "what do you think you will do?"
The question caught Kael off guard not because it was difficult but because it assumed something he had not allowed himself to consider. "I have not thought about it " he admitted.
Lyra glanced at him a small smile forming. "You should " she said. "Why?" Kael asked.
"Because it means you expect to make it through " Lyra said. That answer lingered.
Kael looked ahead his expression unreadable for a moment before something quieter settled beneath it. "What about you?" he asked.
Lyras smile softened, her gaze lifting slightly as if picturing something. "I do not know exactly " she said. "And I know I do not want to keep running from things I do not understand."
She glanced at Kael again. "And I do not want to leave things unfinished " she said. There was meaning in that, unspoken but clear.
Kael understood it. For a moment he did not look away. "Then do not " he said.
Lyra held his gaze then nodded. "Yeah " she said quietly. "I will not."
Far from them Veyron Kade stood in stillness his expression calm, his thoughts. Deliberate. "The pattern is complete " he murmured.
His gaze shifted slightly as if already looking toward the step. "No tests " he said. A faint smile formed, cold and certain. " Time I take something from him " he said.
Back beneath the night sky Kael walked beside Lyra unaware of the exact form that decision would take, but not unaware of its existence. The calm, around them was not peace it was preparation.. When it broke it would not be gentle.
