The trap stopped waiting.
What used to feel controlled and measured changed into something aggressive. It was like something was guiding it. It had decided that just watching was not enough. The air got tighter the Aether around them got denser and heavier and the ground under their feet stopped pulsing and started moving unpredictably. They had to adjust all the time just to stay standing.
"This is getting worse!" Riven shouted, barely keeping his balance as the ground shifted again.
Mira moved quickly. Grabbed his arm before he fell. "Focus! If you lose control now, you are done!"
"I am focused! I am focused on not dying!"
Tarin stepped forward his stance was firm even though the ground was moving. His voice was clear and sharp cutting through all the noise. "Hold your positions! Do not let it break us apart!"
It was too late for that.
The trap was not trying anymore. It was forcing its way.
The space between them started warping not slowly like before but in sharp and sudden movements that changed their positions in an instant. Tarin took a step forward. The ground under him split and he had to shift sideways.
"It is accelerating!" he called out.
Kael already knew that. He could feel it. The structure was not adapting slowly anymore. It was reacting instantly. Every move they made was being countered with precision, leaving no room for mistakes.
"It is locking in " Kael thought.
That meant time was running out.
---
Another shift went through the space stronger than before. This time it hit Mira directly. She was forced steps back as the ground under her tilted sharply.
"Wait.." she started, but the distance between her and the others grew, not enough to separate them but enough to break their coordination.
"Mira!" Riven shouted, trying to reach her. When he moved the ground shifted again and he was off path.
"Do not rush!" Tarin warned. "You will make it worse!"
"I am already making it worse just standing here!"
Kaels eyes narrowed as he tracked the pattern his mind moving fast trying to stay of the traps increasing speed.
"It is isolating targets one by one."
Not completely.
Not yet.
It was getting closer.
Lyra stepped closer to Kael her movements controlled despite the instability. "We are losing formation."
Kael nodded slightly. "And it is intentional."
Another distortion hit, this time from below a shift in pressure that forced Riven backward again his footing slipping as a narrow gap opened under him.
"Okay that is definitely targeting me now!" he yelled.
Mira reached toward him instinctively. The space between them warped again forcing her hand short of reaching him.
"Stay where you are!" she said sharply.
"I would love to but the ground disagrees!"
---
Kael stepped forward his presence cutting through the chaos enough to stabilize his space but even that required more effort than before more control, more precision. Lyra saw it instantly.
"You are pushing more " she said quietly.
Kael did not deny it because he had to. The formation was tightening fast. Holding back now would cost them.
"I need to disrupt it " he said.
Lyras eyes sharpened. "Then do it."
There was no hesitation in her voice, no doubt, just trust.
Kael exhaled slowly his control narrowing, focusing, his Aether slipping outward again deeper this time not just touching the surface of the structure but pressing into it searching for points for flaws for anything that could slow it down.
The moment he did the trap reacted violently.
The air compressed sharply. The ground under him cracked slightly as if the formation itself had recognized the intrusion and responded with immediate force.
"It knows " he realized as a conformation.
---
Away Veyron Kades eyes narrowed slightly his awareness locking onto the exact moment the shift occurred.
"There it is " he murmured. The confirmation he had been waiting for the precision, the control, the signature. There was no doubt anymore.
"Found you."
His smile did not get wider.
It got deeper.
---
Back in the trap Kael felt the pressure spike instantly the structure around him tightening, focusing, aligning directly toward him in a way it had not before.
"It is targeting you!" Mira shouted.
Kael did not respond.
He was already moving while adjusting and calculating.
The formation was faster now, stronger and more precise.
Another violent shift tore through the ground. This time it hit Riven directly forcing him back just far enough that the space between him and the others stretched dangerously thin.
"Hey..! No no no.." he shouted, his voice breaking slightly as the ground under him shifted again.
"Riven!" Mira reached out again. The distance distorted once more stopping her just short.
Tarin stepped forward forcing his way through the terrain but even he could not close the gap fully.
"It is separating him!" he said.
Kaels gaze snapped toward Riven.
The pattern was clear, the intent was clear. The next shift would isolate him completely.
"Not happening " Kael thought.
His control tightened further his Aether pushing harder against the structure not enough to break it but enough to disrupt the next sequence just slightly.
The effect was immediate. The distortion faltered just for a second but it was enough.
Tarin moved instantly closing part of the distance, Mira adjusted her position and Riven stumbled forward barely regaining ground.
"I hate this place!" he shouted.
The trap did not stop.
It adapted again. Faster, Sharper and more aggressive.
---
Kael felt it clearly now.
This was not a trap. This was a system designed to break resistance. To force mistakes. To push until something failed.
And the more he interfered the more it focused on him.
Lyra stepped closer her voice low but firm. "You are carrying much of it."
Kael did not look at her. "I do not have a choice."
"You do " she said.
That made him pause just slightly.
Lyra met his gaze, her expression steady her voice quieter now but stronger.
"You do not have to do it."
The words hit harder than the pressure around them.
Because they were true.
Because he knew it.
For a moment the chaos around them faded just enough for that realization to settle.
Then..
The trap surged again, this time stronger than ever. The ground under Kael locked, the space around him tightened and movement became restricted not completely but enough.
Lyra reacted instantly stepping into the narrowing space before it could fully close forcing herself into his range despite the resistance.
"I am not letting it take you " she said.
Kael looked at her.
For the first time since this began there was no distance left between them.
There was only trust that she choose.
---
Away Veyron watched in silence his gaze sharp his thoughts precise.
"They are holding " he murmured.
"Then let us see how much they can lose."
---
Back in the collapsing structure Kael stood at the center of a trap that had fully turned against him the pressure rising, the space tightening, the options disappearing one by one.
Beside him Lyra remained coser, than ever.
Unwilling to move.
Unwilling to leave.
And Kael knew the next moment would decide everything.
