Chapter 33 - Aftershocks and Intentions

The academy did not recover from what happened. It broke apart.

Not in a way you could see. In how people talked and acted. They started to doubt and fear each other. The excitement about the Void Artisan turned into feelings. People admired him. Also wondered if he was to be trusted.

The morning rumors spread everywhere. Each version added a speculation.

* "I heard the weapon exploded on its own."

* "No it was sabotaged."

* "The artisan's work isn't stable."

* "That doesn't make sense the earlier items were perfect."

* "Then someone is targeting them."

* "Or Testing them."

Everyone was uncertain. Uncertainty is more dangerous than any confirmed truth.

Kael walked through the corridors listening to the rumors. His expression was calm. He noted every word and reaction. This was what he had expected. Not in this way. The balance had. Now it would be harder to maintain control.

Riven looked serious his energy replaced by unease. "I don't like this " he said. "This feels different."

Mira nodded, her brows furrowed. "It's not about strength anymore. It feels… targeted."

Tarin crossed his arms. "Because it is. That wasn't an accident."

Riven let out a breath. "Great. So now we have genius weapons and invisible attackers."

Kael spoke without looking at him. "You were never aiming for peace."

Lyra walked ahead of them quieter than usual. She had not said much since the incident. Her silence carried weight.

Near the central training platform students gathered to discuss and argue. Kaelen Drax stood at the center his presence intense.

"This is not acceptable " Kaelen said. "A crafted weapon does not fail like that unless something interferes with it. If someone is interfering then that means we are being watched, tested or worse."

His grip tightened. "I will not stand by. Pretend this is normal. If someone believes they can hide behind their work while chaos spreads then I will force them out."

The declaration landed heavily.

Not exaggerated.

Not dramatic.

Filled with intent.

"I will surpass him " Kaelen added. "And when I do I will expose the truth behind all of this."

There was no doubt in his voice.

Only resolve.

Not far from there Seris Vale approached the situation differently. Her notes had grown more detailed as she traced the patterns from the incident.

"It wasn't instability " she said quietly. "The structure held until it was forced to collapse."

She paused. "Which means the artisans design is not flawed."

That realization settled in slowly.

Her gaze hardened slightly. "Which also means someone is capable of interfering with something at that level."

Elric Thane stood alone near the edge of the formation grounds his expression

"It wasn't random " he murmured. "It was introduced at the point where stability was highest."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"Whoever did it understands the system."

He opened them again.

"Which means they're close to it."

Veyron Kade stood with patience. The reports from the incident lay before him.

The pattern was already clear.

"You couldn't ignore it " he said softly.

His fingers traced a line across the table.

"If you act, you reveal yourself. If you don't others suffer."

He smiled slightly.

"So lets see which choice you make next."

That evening the academy had quieted, but the tension had not faded. Kael found himself standing alone near one of the traveled pathways.

He did not need to turn when he heard her footsteps.

Lyra stopped a steps away.

"You're going to keep pretending?" she asked.

Kael remained still for a moment before replying. "About what?"

Lyra let out a breath. "About the fact that you knew exactly what was happening yesterday."

The words hung in the air between them.

Kael turned to face her now.

Lyra stepped closer. "You reacted before anyone even understood what was wrong. You moved like you had already seen it before."

A pause.

Then quietly "That's not normal, Kael."

For the time there was something else in her voice.

Concern.

Kael noticed it.

"…You're overthinking it " he said.

Lyra shook her head slightly. "No. I'm thinking enough."

Her eyes searched his face.

"I don't know what you're involved in " she continued, "And I know you're involved in something."

Silence followed longer this time.

He could deny it.

Deflect it.

Redirect it.

None of those would remove what she had already seen.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Some things are better left alone " he said.

Lyras expression softened slightly.

"And some things get worse when they are."

That hit deeper than she intended.

Maybe exactly as she intended.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Lyra stepped back.

Not defeated.

Not convinced.

Not pressing further.

"Just… be careful " she said quietly.

The same words as before.

Heavier now.

More personal.

Then she. Left.

Kael watched her go.

"…She won't stop " he realized.

That meant time was running thinner.

Away in the depths of the exchange Veyrons voice broke the silence once more.

"Lets see if you come out this time."

Somewhere, between those two moments, Between suspicion and intention, The next move was already being set.

The game had changed again.

This time it would not stay controlled.
