Chapter 5 - Fracture in Silence

The arena floor was cold beneath Kaels feet. The floor was made of stone with layers of engraved patterns that pulsed with Aether. This was meant to help the floor withstand impact and contain power during battles.

Above Kael the sky was wide and merciless. The arena was surrounded by rows of candidates and instructors watching from platforms. They were all. Judging.

Then a voice echoed across the arena. "Match Three. Kael versus Daren Holt." The crowd showed an interest in this match. Someone said "Daren is Initiate Mid this should be quick." Another person agreed, saying "Yeah this should be over fast."

Kael stepped forward without showing any emotion. Daren Holt was already waiting for him. Daren was broad-shouldered and confident with a stance but sharp eyes. Daren said "You are the one from earlier Initiate Early." Kael did not respond. Daren. Added "Unlucky you got me first."

The instructor overseeing the match raised a hand. Said "Begin." Soon as the word was out Daren moved quickly. His foot slammed against the ground. He surged forward with Aether flaring around his limbs. Kael did not move away. Daren closed the distance in an instant. His fist drove forward with force.

At the possible moment Kael shifted. He took a step and turned slightly and Darens punch missed. Darens eyes. He said "Not bad." He pivoted instantly. Launched a second strike this time faster and sharper. Kael raised his arm. Blocked the attack. The impact sent a shock through his body and forced him back a step.

Daren pressed forward not giving Kael any space. Strike after strike followed, each one backed by controlled Aether. Kael retreated,. He was not panicked or rushed. He was measured. The crowd watched with growing interest saying "He is keeping up" and "He won't last long."

Darens attacks grew heavier and more aggressive. He snapped "Stop running." Kael did not respond. Instead he watched every movement, every shift of weight and every pattern in Darens attacks. Kael thought "Predictable." Darens next strike came low. Kael stepped back and then forward. He struck Darens arm just as it extended, landing a hit. Daren staggered slightly surprised.

Kael did not follow up. He stepped back and reset. The crowd murmured, saying "He landed that" and "Was that luck?" Darens expression. He said "Enough." Aether surged around him stronger than before. The ground beneath his feet cracked slightly as he pushed forward again faster than before.

Kaels eyes sharpened,. He moved too slowly. The strike. A sharp impact slammed into his side sending him sliding across the arena floor. Pain flared through his body. Kael exhaled slowly as he came to a stop. He thought "Stronger." Daren advanced, saying " you understand this is not your level."

Kael pushed himself up his arm trembling slightly. Not from fear. From restraint. Inside something stirred. Fragments of Aether shifted restlessly reacting to his will. Waiting. Kael clenched his fist. Said "Not yet." He forced it down. Daren did not. Launched another attack, aimed to end it.

Kael stepped forward not back. Time seemed to slow as Darens strike came toward him. Kael raised his hand. For a brief moment something changed. Not visible not obvious,. Wrong. A faint distortion flickered around his fingers, a fracture. Darens Aether wavered, slightly enough. Kael. The strike missed by inches.

His other hand moved, a blow to Darens side. Not strong,. Placed perfectly. Darens breath. His body staggered. Kael moved again another strike, another. Each one small each one controlled,. Every time Darens defense faltered. Not collapsing,. Weakening, like something unseen was interfering.

The crowd fell silent saying "What is happening" and "Why is his Aether?" Daren felt it too his control slipping, not but enough to throw off his rhythm. He said "What are you doing?" Kael did not answer, because even he did not fully understand it. He was barely using it just touching it guiding it letting the fracture exist for a moment then releasing it.

Each time it disrupted, not enough to be seen. Enough to matter. Daren lunged again anger overtaking precision, a mistake. Kael stepped in a strike, clean, direct. Darens balance. His body hit the ground hard. Silence. For a moment no one spoke. Then the instructors voice echoed across the arena "Winner: Kael."

The reaction came instantly "No way " "He won," "How?" Kael stepped back breathing steady his arm still trembling slightly.. The fracture was gone, hidden, unseen as it needed to be. Daren pushed himself up his expression filled with disbelief saying "What did you do?" Kael looked at him. Said "I won." Then he. Walked away no explanation, no pride just silence.

From above Lyra watched, her gaze sharp focused. She had seen it not clearly not fully. Enough. Something had interfered with Darens Aether, something. She murmured "Interesting." On another platform Riven clicked his tongue saying "Lucky ". His eyes said otherwise. He had noticed, not the how. The result "He is not just Early."

The matches continued, one after another. Some ended quickly brutally others dragged on filled with attempts and narrow victories. Kael watched them all learning, understanding the difference between stages between control between strength. Initiate Early struggled Mid fought, Late dominated. The gap was real clear. Yet Kael had crossed it not through power but through something else.

The next match began, "Next match: Lyra Vale." Her opponent stepped forward Initiate Late prepared. The match. Ended in seconds. Lyra moved once a precise motion, her Aether flowing flawlessly overwhelming her opponent completely. No struggle, no wasted movement, control. The crowd erupted, saying "Winner: Lyra Vale."

Kael watched quietly thinking "So that is Awakened Mid, a level entirely." The instructor announced, "Next round will begin shortly." Candidates shifted, some relieved, some nervous. Kael stood still his gaze lifted toward the arena board as new matchups began to form. Names shifted, rearranged then stopped. His eyes narrowed slightly his name, next, to another Riven Tal.

A faint smile appeared on Rivens face as he noticed it too. Across the arena their eyes met, this time no words were needed. The next round was. This time there would be no holding back. Kael exhaled slowly within him the fractured Aether stirred once more stronger restless, waiting. He said "Soon." The tournament had only just. Already the path ahead was beginning to crack, not just for Kael but for everyone.

Something had entered the academy something that did not follow the rules something that could not be measured something that would not remain hidden forever. The Lost Path of Heaven was beginning to show itself.
