Chapter 11 - The Awakening Below

They did not stop running.

The moment Lyra gave the command the group started moving. They were no longer tense because they all knew what would happen if they hesitated. The ground was shaking beneath their feet and cracks were spreading everywhere. This place was getting worse by the minute. It was like something was alive and aware.

Kael was running at the back of the group. He was not being careful he just felt something was following them. This presence was not making any noise or moving. Kael could feel it. Every step he took made him feel more connected to it. It was like the distance between them did not matter anymore.

"It is still there " Mira said, struggling to keep up with the others. "I can feel it."

"You are not imagining things " Tarin replied, looking around them as he ran. "Something changed when that structure opened up."

Riven did not look back. They all heard him clearly. "It is not just something. It is focused on us."

No one needed to ask what he meant.

They all knew what Riven was talking about.

Kael did not say anything. His face changed a little. The Aether inside him was reacting again. This time it was even stronger. The Aether in this place was no longer just reacting to Kaels presence. It was actually working with him. Whenever he moved the Aether would. Turn in strange ways.

Lyra noticed what was happening.

She had been watching the environment. Now she was looking at Kael more often. The connection between Kael and the Aether was no longer an idea. It was real and they could all see it. The way the world was behaving around Kael was changing.

"We need to change direction " Lyra said suddenly slowing down a bit. "Running in a line is not helping us. If it is tracking Kael through the Aether then just running away will not work."

Tarin nodded immediately. "Let us change our pattern. Do not run close together."

They changed their formation without stopping trying to confuse whatever was following them. The ground was difficult to run on with rocks and sudden dips. Mira almost fell over a times but they all kept going.

For now they were in control.

Then the ground in front of them gave way.

It happened without warning. A big hole opened up. They all stopped just in time. Tarin crouched down to look at the hole and the others gathered around him.

"Be careful " he said. "That hole is not just deep. The Aether inside it is very strong."

Riven frowned. "We can jump over it."

"No " Lyra said immediately. "It is not safe. If the Aether shifts while we are in the air we will not land where we expect to."

Kael walked closer to the hole looking down at the swirling mist. The Aether inside him was reacting again. This time it felt different. It was like he recognized something.

"This hole leads somewhere " he said quietly.

Riven gave him a look. "Everything in this place leads to danger."

Kael shook his head. "Not like this. The Aether is not just unstable it is being pulled somewhere."

"Pulled where?" Mira asked.

Kael did not answer away. He closed his eyes and focused on the Aether. The patterns were. Changing, but to him they made sense.

"Down " he said finally.

The others were silent for a moment.

Tarin sighed slowly. "We do not have time to explore every thing in this place. That thing behind us is still coming for us."

But before Tarin could say anything the ground started shaking again. This time it was even stronger and closer.

"It is catching up " Mira said, her voice shaking with fear.

Lyras face was tense. Her voice was steady. "Then we stop running without a plan."

Riven turned to her. "You want to fight that thing?"

"No " she replied. "I want to understand why it is here."

Her eyes went to Kael.

". Why it is following him."

The others looked at Kael too.

Tarin hesitated, then said, "If this place is reacting to Kael then maybe the answer is not there. Maybe it is through Kael."

Kael looked at Tarin then back at the hole.

The Aether inside him was surging again urging him to move.

To go down.

He took a breath.

"We are not outrunning it " he said.

Riven clenched his jaw. "So what do we do. Just wait for it to catch up?"

Kael shook his head.

"No. We go where it wants us to go."

Mira stared at him. "That is crazy."

"Maybe " Kael said calmly. "But everything in this place is connected. That structure, this place, the creatures... They all react to the thing."

He paused for a moment.

"To me."

The others did not argue.

Because they knew Kael was right.

Lyra stepped forward stopping beside Kael. "If we go down we do not rush in. We move carefully stay together and if anything changes we go back immediately."

Riven nodded slightly without any mockery. "You are actually agreeing with him?"

"I am agreeing with the situation " Lyra replied. "We do not have options."

Tarin nodded slowly. "She is right. Running without a plan will get us killed faster."

Mira looked at the others unsure but then she took a deep breath and steadied herself. "Fine.. We stay together."

Kael glanced at her back at the hole.

"Stay close " he said.

Then he stepped forward.

The hole was not a drop. It was like a path that guided Kael down. The others followed carefully trying not to slip or fall. The deeper they went the darker it became. Not because of the lack of light but because the presence around them was changing.

Mira struggled the most, her breathing as she tried to control her Aether. Tarin stayed close helping her as he looked around. Riven moved with an awareness his confidence replaced by caution. Lyra remained steady. Her eyes never left Kael.

Because the deeper they went the clearer it became. This place was not just reacting to Kael it was responding to him.

They finally reached the bottom. The space opened up into a big chamber. The walls were lined with stone and strange markings. The ground was uneven. They could stand on it.

For a moment nothing happened.

Then Kael felt it. The presence was stronger closer.

"It is here " he said quietly.

The others tensed up looking around the darkness.

Riven lowered his stance. "Where?"

Kael did not look around. He looked forward at the center of the chamber.

There the air was distorting. Not violently, not chaotically. Deliberately. Something was forming, slowly as if it had been waiting.

Mira took a step back. "That is not..."

She could not finish the sentence.

Because this time it was not a creature. It was something else something that carried presence something that understood.

As it took shape its distorted gaze settled on Kael.

Again.

This time there was no mindless hunger, no instinctive aggression. Only recognition.

Kaels breathing slowed down.

The Aether inside him surged violently reacting to the presence with a force he had never felt before.

"You are not like the others " he said under his breath.

The entity did not move,. The Aether, around it shifted. As if it was acknowledging Kael.

Behind Kael Lyras voice was quiet.

"It is not attacking."

"No " Tarin said, his tone tense.

"It is waiting."

Rivens grip tightened. "For what?"

Kael did not answer, because he already knew.

The entity was not waiting for them. It was waiting for Kael.

It was waiting for him.

For him.

For the first time Kael felt something unexpected.

This was not fear that Kael felt.

Kael had a question.

What if the Trial Grounds were not something that was chasing Kael?

What if the Trial Grounds were something that was calling Kael?

The chamber became silent.

The silence was heavy.

The silence was unbroken.

As the distance, between Kael and the entity slowly disappeared.

The truth of the Trial Grounds began to reveal itself to Kael.
