The night did not get quieter after the creature was destroyed. If anything it became more aware of what was happening. The ground around the group started to pulse like something beneath the surface was watching them. The air was filled with an energy that made it hard to breathe.
No one said a word at first. They just stood there trying to make sense of what they had seen. Riven was the first to break the silence. His voice was lower and more serious than before. "That was not like anything I have ever seen " he said.
His eyes were on Kael. He was not being hostile. He was being careful like he was not sure what to make of Kael. Tarin crossed his arms looking thoughtful but tense. "It was not just powerful " he said slowly. "It was in control of something that should not be controlled."
Mira looked uneasy glancing between Kael and the spot where the creature had been. "It was targeting Kael " she said softly. "It did not care about the rest of us."
Lyra did not say a word at first. She just watched Kael like she was trying to figure him out. Finally she spoke. "It did not attack you randomly " she said calmly. "It reacted to your energy."
Kael looked at her. He did not answer right away. The energy inside him was still moving, like it was responding to something he did not understand. "This place is the problem " he said finally.
Tarin frowned. "You think this is normal for the trial?" he asked. Kael shook his head. "I think this place is reacting to something it recognizes " he said quietly.
Riven exhaled sharply. "Recognizes? You mean this place knows you?" Kael did not answer. He did not know what to say.
He had a feeling like something was familiar. Not because he remembered it. Because it was deep inside him. Lyra looked around her eyes drifting into the darkness. "We should not stay here " she said. "If one creature came more will follow."
That was enough to get them moving. They did not. Ask questions. They just knew they had to get out of there. They moved deeper into the trial area the ground getting more uneven and fractured. The energy in the air was getting thicker making it hard to breathe.
Mira stayed close to Tarin looking nervous. Riven walked ahead his eyes scanning the surroundings. Lyra stayed near the center of the group watching and waiting. Kael walked on the edge the energy around him shifting and reacting to his presence.
After a while they came to a uneven clearing. In the middle of it was a structure that did not belong. It was old and broken with cracks and erosion.. It was still standing, like it was defying the chaos around it.
Tarin slowed down. "What is this?" he asked. Riven frowned. "This was not mentioned in the trial " he said. Lyra stepped forward her eyes narrowing as she studied the symbols on the structure. "It is old " she said. "Older than our school."
Mira looked nervous. "Should we be near it?" she asked. No one answered. Kael felt something when he looked at the structure. The energy inside him reacted, like it was recognizing something.
"…This should not be here " he said quietly. Lyra looked at him. "You feel it too " she said. It was not a question.
Kael took a step closer the sensation getting stronger. The symbols on the structure were. Broken, but they still meant something. "Do not touch it " Tarin warned.
Kael stopped short of the structure. He did not reach out. He did not step back either. "…This place is not just unstable " he said quietly. "It was made this way."
Riven frowned. "What do you mean?" he asked. Kaels eyes were still on the structure. "…Something broke here " he said.
The words hung in the air heavy with meaning. Lyra stepped closer her eyes scanning the symbols again. "These markings... They are not energy scripts " she said. "Then what are they?" Mira asked.
Lyra hesitated. "…They look like a variation of flow diagrams " she said slowly. ". Instead of guiding energy... They disrupt it." The group fell silent taking in the implications.
Riven let out a breath. "So this entire place..." Tarin finished his sentence. "…Might be a system.". Something worse.
Kaels eyes narrowed, the energy inside him stirring again. Something was buried within the structure something that was responding to him.. Then the ground started to tremble.
It was subtle at first. It grew quickly. "Back " Tarin said immediately. The group moved away from the structure as the tremor intensified cracks forming along the ground and spreading outward.
The energy surged violently reacting to Kaels presence. He felt a pull, not physical, but undeniable. "…No " he muttered.
The structure shifted, opening up to reveal darkness within. Not empty not hollow,. Something deep and ancient. A presence was watching them, heavy and powerful.
Mira stepped back fear in her voice. "What is that?" Rivens expression hardened. "That is not something we can fight " he said.
Lyra did not move her eyes fixed on the opening. "…It is not fully awake " she said.. It would be. Kael took a step back feeling the energy inside him surge out of control.
"…It knows " he said, the words escaping before he could stop them. Lyra turned to him immediately. "What does?" she asked.
Kael did not answer.. Deep within the structure something shifted and the energy across the clearing reacted in alignment with him. The presence stirred again now aware.
Then a sound echoed through their senses a low distorted resonance that made Mira cover her head. "What is that?" she cried out. Tarin stepped back. "We need to leave " he said.
Riven did not argue. Lyras gaze remained fixed for one moment then she turned. "Move " she said. They ran, not in panic but with urgency. Because whatever was inside that structure it was not meant to be found.. Now it was waking up.
Kael did not look back. He could feel it every step, every breath. The presence was following him not physically. Through something deeper. The trial was no longer, about survival. It had become something something far more dangerous. Because now the world itself was beginning to respond.
