Chapter 15 - The Reward of Survival

Silence lasted for a time after the entity fell. It was not the kind of silence that makes you feel like something is about to happen. It was the kind of silence that makes you feel safe like you have finally made it through something

The room, which had been shaking and unstable was now calm. The air was still except for an steady movement of the fractured Aether. It was like the force that had been making it wild had stopped for a moment.

Kael was standing where the battle had ended trying to catch his breath. He was tired. His body was slow to recover. The fragments inside him were quiet, but not completely. They were waiting, like they were expecting something to happen.

The others were starting to recover. Riven sat down on a rock running his hand through his hair. "I am never going to underestimate anything in this place " he said, sounding tired but also respectful.

Mira was sitting near him trying to calm down her breathing. "We almost did not make it " she said quietly sounding relieved.

Tarin was still standing, looking around the room to make sure there were no threats. "Almost does not matter " he said. "We. That is why we are still here."

Lyra did not say anything at first. She was looking at the center of the room at the structure. It had changed. The broken pieces that had sealed it were no longer intact. Where the entity had come out there was now an opening with a steady light coming from inside.

"It is not over " Lyra said softly.

The others looked at the structure too. Riven frowned. "You think something else is coming out of that?"

Lyra shook her head. "No something was left behind."

That was enough to make them move forward despite being tired. They walked carefully towards the structure each step slow and cautious. As they got closer they could feel the difference. The Aether here was not unstable it was controlled.

Kael felt it soon as he got close to the opening. The fragments inside him stirred, like they were aligning with something. "This is different " he said quietly.

Tarin nodded. "I can feel it too it is not chaotic like the rest of this place."

Riven crossed his arms looking at the opening carefully. "Which probably means it is more dangerous."

Mira hesitated, then stepped. "More valuable."

Lyra did not say anything she just stepped forward. As she crossed into the opening nothing happened. No attack, no surge stillness.

The others followed her. They found themselves in a small refined room. The walls were smooth with markings that pulsed softly with controlled Aether. At the center of the room there was a cluster of fragments suspended in place each one glowing faintly.

Kael stopped, the fragments inside him reacting strongly. "So this is what was left behind " Riven said, his voice quieter now.

Mira stepped closer her eyes widening. "It feels stable."

Tarin observed carefully. "These are not remnants they were preserved."

Lyra looked at Kael. "For someone."

Kael stepped forward slowly. As he got closer the resonance became stronger. The fragments inside him aligned with those suspended before him feeling almost natural.

"These are not just fragments " he said quietly. "They are part of something."

Kael reached out. For a moment nothing happened. Then the fragments moved, willingly. Merged with him. The room reacted, with a pulse of energy that felt expansive like something dormant had been activated.

Kael felt a surge of sensation like information was flooding through him. "This is control " he said. "Not just breaking Aether. Directing how it breaks."

The others felt it too. The room responded again with smaller pulses of energy moving towards each of them. Mira, Riven, Tarin and Lyra each received a fragment, which merged with their Aether giving them abilities.

Rivens attacks became stronger and cleaner Mira could stabilize Aether better Tarins perception was. Lyras control increased significantly.

As they looked at Kael they saw that he had changed, noticeably. The fragments inside him were no longer chaotic they were aligned.

Tarin said, "So this was a reward."

Lyra shook her head. "No these were left behind intentionally."

Mira asked, "By who?"

No one answered, because they did not know.. They understood that this place was never meant to be a trial ground and what they had just received was never meant for ordinary students.

As they stood there a faint tremor passed through the room subtle but noticeable. Riven frowned. "Do not tell me there is more."

Tarin looked towards the passage they had come from. "No this is something."

Far above them at the academy a formation flickered briefly unnoticeably.. Not entirely. Somewhere someone felt it. Whatever had just awakened below had not gone unnoticed.

Kael looked at his hand. The fracture formed, smaller sharper controlled. For the time it did not feel like something he was barely holding together it felt like something he could use.. Deep within the fragments stirred again not unstable, but aware, like what he had just gained was only the beginning. The Lost Path of Heaven had revealed its reward and with it the first step, towards something far greater.
