Chapter 18 - Eyes of the Academy

The path up felt off.

Not scary like the depths, where every step could lead to collapse or Aether bursts. This was different. The unstable mess of the areas faded as they climbed replaced by something controlled.

* Structured.

* Measured.

* Artificial.

The walls no longer shifted wildly. The ground was firm, unbroken like the passage had been deliberately kept intact. Faint Aether lines ran along the surface forming a network that pulsed steadily.

They were leaving chaos behind.

Stepping into something that had been watching it.

Riven led, relaxed on the surface but sharp-eyed. "I don't like this " he muttered. "It's too quiet."

Mira nodded slightly her exhaustion replaced by alertness. "It feels like we're being… guided."

Tarin glanced at the Aether lines. "Not guided " he said. "Observed."

Lyra said nothing.

She took in every detail every shift in the controlled energy flow. Compared to the depths this place felt almost clean.

Which made it more dangerous.

Kael walked beside her.

The fragments inside him were calm.

Too calm.

They no longer reacted to the environment like they had below. Instead they stayed quiet as though this wasn't a place where they should reveal themselves.

Be revealed.

"…We're close " Kael said.

No one questioned how he knew.

They could feel it too.

The passage widened, the faint light ahead growing stronger until it spilled into the corridor.

The exit.

They stepped out together.

The change was immediate.

The air felt lighter.

Cleaner.

Stable.

Above them stretched the sky, clear and expansive a stark contrast to the suffocating depths they had just left. The Trial Grounds spread out around them no longer a maze but a structured field bordered by controlled formations and distant stone platforms.

It looked normal.

The feeling remained.

Eyes on them.

Waiting.

"Finally " Riven said, though his voice lacked ease.

Mira let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "We made it…"

Tarin didn't relax. His gaze shifted across the area searching.

"…We're not alone."

They all saw him.

An older man in academy robes straight posture, calm presence—but heavy.

Not overwhelming like power.

Controlled.

Refined.

Watching them.

Silently.

Lyras eyes narrowed. "…An examiner."

Riven let out a breath. " Course there is."

Mira straightened, her earlier relief replaced by tension. "What do we say?"

Tarins voice was low. "The truth."

Kaels gaze remained fixed on the man.

"…Not all of it."

Lyra glanced at him briefly then nodded.

They stepped forward.

The man didn't move.

He simply watched them approach his gaze lingering on each of them before settling on Kael.

Then it shifted away.

As if nothing had happened.

"You took longer than expected " the man said.

His voice was calm.

Measured.

Tarin stepped forward taking the lead. "The lower regions were unstable."

"That is expected " the examiner replied.

His eyes moved again.

Careful.

Observant.

"The formations above were not."

A brief silence followed.

Riven crossed his arms. "Maybe they were reacting to the instability."

The mans gaze flicked toward him.

"…Perhaps."

He didn't sound convinced.

Mira shifted slightly. "We encountered Aether entities. They became stronger as we went deeper."

"That is also expected " the examiner said.

His attention returned to Kael.

"…. Something changed."

Not a question.

A statement.

The pressure was subtle.

Real.

Kael met his gaze.

Calm.

Controlled.

"The environment became more unstable " he said. "We had to adapt."

The man watched him a moment longer.

Then nodded slightly.

"…Adaptation is the purpose of the Trial."

Again, He did not sound fully convinced.

The air grew heavier.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Then the man stepped forward.

"I will conduct an assessment " he said.

Mira blinked. "Assessment?"

"To confirm your condition " he replied.

Tarins expression tightened slightly.

Riven let out a breath. "… Course you will."

Lyras gaze sharpened.

Kael remained still.

The man raised a hand.

The formation activated.

A soft light spread outward encompassing all of them as controlled Aether flowed through the space scanning not forcefully but thoroughly.

Mira stiffened slightly.

Riven frowned.

Tarins eyes narrowed.

Lyra watched Kael.

Because she felt it.

The fragments inside him reacted.

Not violently.

Defensively.

As if rejecting the scan.

Kael closed his eyes briefly.

Focus.

Control.

The fragments stirred, He held them.

Kept them quiet.

Hidden.

The light passed over him.

Paused.

Just for a moment.

Then moved on.

The formation faded.

The man lowered his hand.

Silence followed.

Then, "…You passed " he said.

Mira exhaled in relief.

Riven rolled his shoulders slightly.

Tarin relaxed a fraction.

Lyra watched the man carefully.

Because she saw it.

The slight shift in his gaze.

The faint narrowing of his eyes.

When he looked at Kael again.

"…You may return to the academy " he continued.

His tone was unchanged.

His attention lingered.

Not openly.

Intentionally.

Kael felt it.

Did not react.

They turned to leave.

Together.

Not a word exchanged.

Understood.

They had made it out.

They had not escaped notice.

Behind them the examiner remained still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then he spoke.

Softly.

"…Interesting."

Another figure stepped into the edge of the platform.

"You sensed it too?" they asked.

The examiner nodded slightly.

"…Something interfered with the formation."

"The students?"

A brief pause.

His gaze lingered in the direction Kael had gone.

"…One of them."

The figures expression sharpened. "Which one?"

The examiner didn't answer immediately.

"That boy."

Ahead, Kael walked in silence.

Unaware of the words.

Not unaware of the feeling.

Something had changed.

Not just, within the Trial Grounds.

Outside it.

The world had taken notice.

From this point forward, Nothing would remain simple.

The Lost Path of Heaven had revealed him if only slightly.

Now eyes would follow.
