Chapter 8 - Into the Unstable

The gate opened without making a sound.

Yet the moment it did every candidate felt it.

A shift happened.

It wasn't in the air.. In the very nature of Aether itself.

Beyond the stone threshold was a landscape that seemed disconnected from the rest of the academy. The ground was uneven. It was layered with rock and dark soil that pulsed faintly as if something beneath it was alive. The sky above was dimmer. It was tinged with a gray even though it was a clear day outside.

It didn't feel natural.

It felt wrong.

"This is the Trial Grounds " the instructor said. His voice carried across the gathered candidates. "Once you enter there will be no supervision. No intervention. What happens inside… is your responsibility."

There was a pause. Then he continued.

"You will be assigned in groups of five. Survive for three days. That is all."

The simplicity of the rule made it more dangerous.

Names were called.

Groups formed.

Some candidates immediately moved toward those they recognized. They formed alliances with faces or known strengths. Others hesitated. They were uncertain. They were wary of choosing the companions.

Kael stood still.

"Group Twelve."

His number.

"Kael."

"Lyra Vale."

"Riven Tal."

"…Tarin Sol."

"…Mira Elt."

A subtle ripple passed through the crowd.

"Riven and Lyra in the group?"

"That's unfair…"

"Wait, Kael too?"

Kaels expression didn't change.. His attention sharpened.

So this was how it would be.

Lyra stepped first. Her posture was composed, as always. Her gaze briefly passed over each member of the group. Then it settled into observation.

Riven followed. His expression tightened slightly when he noticed Kael.

"… course " he muttered under his breath.

Two others joined them.

Tarin Sol was tall and lean. He had features and restless eyes that moved constantly as if assessing threats from every direction. His Aether presence was Initiate Mid, perhaps nearing Late.

Mira Elt stood in contrast. She was quiet and reserved. Her movements were careful. The faint flow of Aether around her suggested discipline and control likely Initiate Mid.

Five.

A balanced group.

Too balanced.

Kael said nothing.

The instructors voice rose more.

"You may enter."

There was no countdown.

No signal.

Just movement.

Groups began stepping one after another. They crossed the threshold into the Trial Grounds.

Kael followed.

The moment he stepped through.

Everything changed.

The pressure hit instantly.

It wasn't overwhelming.

It was wrong.

Aether in this place didn't flow.

It shifted.

It twisted.

Fragments.

Kaels eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So it's like this."

Where others might feel discomfort.

He felt familiarity.

Behind him Mira inhaled sharply. "This… this Aether…"

"It's unstable " Tarin said. His voice was tense. "Hard to control."

Riven frowned. His usual confidence was dimmed slightly as he extended his senses. "Its interfering with flow. Techniques will be harder to maintain."

Lyra remained still for a moment longer than the others.

Then she spoke.

"…Not just harder."

Her voice was quiet.

"Unpredictable."

Kael glanced at her briefly.

She understood.

Not fully.

More than the others.

"Stay together " Tarin said quickly. "We don't know what's inside yet."

No one disagreed.

They began moving.

The deeper they went the stranger the environment became.

The ground shifted in ways. Uneven terrain gave way to ridges and shallow depressions. Faint pulses of Aether gathered like mist.

Occasionally small cracks would. Disappear along the surface. It was as if the land itself was unstable.

Mira walked carefully. "This place feels… alive."

"Its reacting " Lyra said.

"To what?" Riven asked.

She didn't answer.

Kael did.

"…Aether."

They all looked at him.

"It reacts to Aether usage " he continued calmly. "The more you use the more unstable it becomes."

A brief silence followed.

"…You figured that already?" Tarin asked.

Kael didn't respond.

Lyras gaze lingered on him.

Again.

They continued forward.

Hours passed.

The tension didn't fade.

It grew.

Every step deeper into the Trial Grounds increased the instability around them. Even maintaining a flow of Aether required effort now. It forced the group to conserve energy and avoid techniques.

Then.

A sound.

Low.

Rough.

Something moved ahead.

The group stopped instantly.

Tarin raised a hand. "Wait."

The sound came again.

Closer.

From behind a formation of rock something emerged.

It wasn't human.

It was a creature.

Its body was twisted. Its form was unstable as if it couldn't fully hold its shape. Dark veins of Aether ran across its surface. They pulsed erratically.

"…What is that?" Mira whispered.

"Aether spawn " Lyra said quietly. "Formed from energy."

It moved suddenly.

Fast.

Riven stepped forward immediately.

"I'll handle it."

Aether surged around him.

Flickered.

Unstable.

His attack formed.

Not perfectly.

The creature lunged.

Rivens strike hit.

The impact wasn't clean.

The creature twisted mid-motion. Its form distorted as it absorbed part of the attack. It redirected the rest.

Riven stumbled back.

"…What?"

"It adapted " Tarin said sharply.

The creature attacked again.

This time.

Kael moved.

He stepped in. His movements were precise and controlled.

No visible surge of Aether.

As the creature approached.

He felt it.

The same instability.

The same fractured flow.

"…Just like mine."

His hand rose.

Not forcing.

Not grabbing.

Guiding.

A small fracture formed.

The creatures movement.

Hesitated.

Just for a moment.

Enough.

Kael struck.

It was a hit.

The creatures unstable form collapsed inward. Then it scattered into fragments of fading energy.

Silence.

The group stared.

"…You just killed it?" Tarin said.

Kael stepped back.

"…It was unstable."

"That doesn't explain anything " Riven said. His voice was sharper than before.

Kael didn't answer.

Lyra did not speak either.

Her eyes.

Did not leave him.

"…Again " she thought.

That same interference.

That same disruption.

They continued moving.. The atmosphere had changed.

Now it wasn't the Trial Grounds that felt unstable.

It was the group itself.

Trust was thinner.

Questions remained unanswered.

And the deeper they went.

The dangerous everything became.

Night fell slowly.

The gray sky darkened further. Shadows stretched across the terrain.

"We should stop here " Tarin said. "Rest in shifts."

No one argued.

They settled into a formation. They maintained distance. Stayed within sight.

Kael sat apart.

Not isolated.

Not close.

His gaze lifted toward the darkened sky.

The fragments stirred again.

Stronger here.

More responsive.

"…This place…"

It wasn't just similar to the Ember Wastes.

It was closer to his power.

More compatible.

A slow breath left him.

"…I can't stay hidden forever."

From across the clearing.

Lyra watched him.

Silent.

Observing.

Understanding more with each passing moment.

And beyond them.

Deeper within the Trial Grounds.

Something shifted.

Not a creature.

Not a simple Aether spawn.

Something larger.

Something aware.

Drawn.

Not, to the group.

To one person.

Kael.

The air pulsed faintly.

Unstable Aether gathered.

And the deeper truth of this place…

Began to awaken.

The trial had only just begun.
