Chapter 8 - 008: The Voice That Isn't Mine

"Not yours."

The words did not echo.

They settled.

Deep.

Like they had always been there, waiting for the right moment to be heard.

Kai didn't breathe.

Didn't move.

Because that voice…

It wasn't his.

It came from inside him.

Clear.

Calm.

Certain.

"…Say that again."

Silence.

His hand tightened against his chest, fingers pressing hard as if he could physically reach whatever was speaking to him.

Nothing.

No response.

Only the slow, steady beat of his heart.

Then—

A second pulse.

Not his.

Kai froze.

"…I felt that."

His eyes narrowed slightly, scanning his surroundings instinctively.

Empty.

Broken ground.

The corpse behind him.

No one else.

And yet—

He wasn't alone.

His breathing slowed.

Forced.

Controlled.

"…You're inside me."

Still no answer.

But this time—

He didn't need one.

Because he could feel it.

Not just as pressure.

Not just as energy.

But as presence.

Alive.

Aware.

Watching him the same way he had seen it in that darkness.

Kai stood up slowly.

His body protested.

Pain returned.

Sharp.

Real.

But beneath it—

That other sensation remained.

Cold.

Endless.

Patient.

"…Fine."

His voice dropped slightly.

"If you're not going to talk…"

He exhaled once.

"…Then I'll figure you out myself."

The system flickered faintly.

Like it was reacting to his words.

Kai let out a quiet breath.

"…Even you can't read it."

That confirmed it.

Whatever this thing was—

It wasn't part of the system.

Which meant it was something else entirely.

Something older.

Or something wrong.

His gaze shifted toward the corpse behind him.

The creature he killed.

The source of that dark energy.

"…You came from that thing."

A pause.

Then—

For a split second—

The air around the corpse warped.

Not visibly.

Not clearly.

But enough for Kai to notice.

His eyes sharpened.

"…So you're reacting to it."

He stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Each step felt heavier than it should.

Like something was resisting him.

Or warning him.

His chest pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Not painful.

Just… active.

Alive.

The closer he got—

The clearer it became.

That presence inside him was changing.

Not growing.

Not exactly.

Adjusting.

Like it was syncing with something.

Or remembering something.

Kai stopped just a few steps away from the corpse.

Up close—

It looked worse.

Cracks ran through its body.

Not from his attacks.

Something deeper.

Like it had been unstable even before the fight.

"…What were you?"

The question slipped out quietly.

And for the first time—

He got a reaction.

Not words.

Not a voice.

But a feeling.

Sharp.

Violent.

Wrong.

Images flashed through his mind.

Too fast to fully see.

Dark shapes.

Broken space.

Something tearing through something else.

Kai staggered slightly.

"…What was that…"

The feeling disappeared instantly.

Like it was never there.

His breathing picked up.

Unsteady now.

That wasn't normal.

That wasn't memory.

That was something else.

Something trying to surface.

"…You're not just inside me."

The realization hit slowly.

But once it did,

It didn't leave.

"…You brought something with you."

Silence.

But this time,

It felt heavier.

More aware.

Like it was listening more closely now.

Watching his thoughts.

Kai took a step back.

Then another.

Distance.

He needed distance.

Because something about that corpse.....

Something about this entire place—

Didn't feel safe anymore.

Not even for him.

The system flickered again.

Stronger this time.

[Alert]

[Gate Instability Increasing]

[Immediate evacuation recommended]

Kai's eyes snapped upward.

"…Of course."

First the fight.

Then the hunters.

Now this.

He let out a quiet breath.

"…Yeah, I'm leaving."

But even as he turned,

That feeling came back.

Sudden.

Sharp.

The presence inside him reacted violently.

Not calm.

Not watching.

Alert.

Focused.

On something.

Kai froze.

"…What now…"

His eyes slowly shifted.

Scanning.

Searching.

Then

He saw it.

The air ahead of him

Cracked.

Not physically.

But like something invisible had split open.

A thin line.

Dark.

Moving.

Kai's heartbeat slowed.

Instinct kicked in.

Danger.

Real danger.

"…That wasn't there before."

The crack widened.

Slowly.

Silently.

Like something was pushing through from the other side.

Kai didn't move.

Couldn't.

Because this....

This felt worse than the creature he just killed.

Much worse.

The presence inside him pulsed violently.

Not afraid.

Excited.

That was worse.

"…Don't tell me…"

The crack spread further.

And from within

Something shifted.

Something large.

Something that shouldn't fit through something that small.

Kai took a step back.

Then another.

For the first time since everything started,

He felt it clearly.

Fear.

"…I should go."

But his body didn't move fast enough.

Because the moment he decided

Something came through.

Not fully.

Just enough.

A shape.

A hand.

Too long.

Too thin.

Too wrong.

It gripped the edge of the crack

And pulled.

Kai's eyes widened.

"…What the hell is that…"

The crack expanded instantly.

Violently.

The space around it distorted.

The ground trembled.

And that thing

Started forcing its way into his world.

The presence inside Kai surged.

Not resisting.

Not warning.

Welcoming.

Kai's breath caught.

"…You know this thing."

Silence.

Then

That same voice.

Clear.

Cold.

Certain.

"Yes."

Kai's heart stopped.

"…What do you mean yes"

"Run."

The word hit differently.

Not a suggestion.

Not advice.

A command.

The first real warning it had given him.

Kai didn't hesitate.

He turned,

And ran.

Behind him,

Something broke through completely.
