Chapter 7 - 007: They Saw Something They shouldn't

"Stop right there."

The voice cut through the air like a blade.

Sharp. Commanding. Unquestionable.

Kai didn't move.

Didn't turn.

But his senses locked onto them instantly.

Five hunters.

No.

Not just hunters.

Trained.

Disciplined.

Dangerous.

Their formation alone said everything. They weren't rushing in blindly like amateurs. They spread out slightly, controlling distance, watching angles, ready for anything.

Ready for him.

"…You're surrounded."

Another voice. Calm. Cold.

Kai slowly turned.

Their eyes met his.

And in that moment, everything changed.

Silence fell.

Not because nothing was happening.

But because too much was.

They were observing him.

Every detail.

The blood on his clothes.

The way he stood.

The fact that he was still alive.

Alone.

In a place where even teams struggled to survive.

Then one of them stepped forward.

Tall.

Composed.

Authority in every movement.

A leader.

"…Explain."

Kai said nothing.

His mind was already moving.

Fast.

Too fast.

They were not like the others.

If he said the wrong thing, they wouldn't hesitate.

If he showed weakness, they might ignore him.

If he showed strength—

They would dig deeper.

His chest pulsed.

Once.

Then again.

That thing inside him.

Reacting.

Watching them.

Judging them.

"…Not now," Kai muttered under his breath.

The leader's eyes narrowed.

"You said something."

Kai exhaled slowly.

Then finally spoke.

"…I cleared it."

A pause.

Then one of the hunters scoffed.

"You expect us to believe that?"

Another stepped forward slightly, eyes sharp.

"There's no team here. No backup. No signal. Just you."

His gaze dropped briefly to the massive corpse behind Kai.

Then back to him.

"…And that."

The air tightened.

Kai could feel it.

Suspicion turning into something heavier.

Something more dangerous.

The leader took another step closer.

Slow.

Measured.

"…We detected a high level energy spike before we arrived."

His eyes didn't leave Kai's.

"…That doesn't come from an F rank hunter."

There it was.

The problem.

Kai said nothing.

But inside—

Something shifted.

The cold presence stirred again.

Stronger this time.

Interested.

Like it was listening.

The leader noticed.

Kai saw it in his expression.

That slight change.

That flicker of instinct.

"…What are you?"

The question landed heavier than expected.

Not who.

What.

Kai's fingers tightened slightly.

"…Just someone who didn't die."

Wrong answer.

He knew it the moment he said it.

The hunters moved.

Not attacking.

But ready.

Weapons angled.

Energy building.

They didn't trust him.

Not even a little.

The leader's voice dropped lower.

More serious.

"…Last chance."

Kai's heart slowed.

Not from calm.

From focus.

This situation was collapsing.

Fast.

Too fast.

He couldn't fight them.

Not like this.

Not yet.

But he also couldn't let them take control.

Because if they did—

They would find it.

That thing inside him.

And whatever it was…

It would not stay hidden.

His chest pulsed again.

Stronger.

Sharper.

Almost like a warning.

Or a trigger.

Kai's breath steadied.

"…You came because of the spike."

The leader didn't respond.

But his silence confirmed it.

Kai nodded slightly.

"…Then you already know something went wrong here."

A pause.

A shift.

Small.

But real.

The hunters exchanged quick glances.

Just for a second.

That was enough.

Kai continued.

"…So ask yourself something."

His voice dropped.

Quieter.

But heavier.

"If I caused it…"

He lifted his eyes fully.

Meeting theirs without hesitation.

"…Why am I still standing here waiting for you?"

Silence.

A long one this time.

The tension didn't disappear.

But it changed.

Doubt crept in.

Just a little.

The leader studied him carefully.

Analyzing.

Recalculating.

Then—

"…Lower your weapons."

The others hesitated.

"But—"

"That's an order."

Slowly, reluctantly, they complied.

Not fully relaxed.

But no longer on the edge of attacking.

Kai didn't move.

Didn't relax.

Because he knew—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

The leader stepped closer again.

Now just a few steps away.

Close enough to feel the pressure coming off him.

Close enough to notice something else.

His eyes.

Locked on Kai's chest.

Not his face.

Not his wounds.

His chest.

Kai felt it immediately.

That reaction.

That thing inside him.

It responded.

Hard.

The air around him shifted again.

Stronger this time.

The leader froze.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But Kai saw it.

"…You feel it too."

The words slipped out quietly.

The leader's expression darkened.

"…Everyone step back."

This time, there was no hesitation.

They moved instantly.

Distance.

Formation.

Defense.

The atmosphere snapped tight again.

But now—

There was something else in it.

Fear.

Not of Kai.

Of what was inside him.

Kai's heartbeat slowed.

But that thing…

It didn't.

It was getting louder.

Hungrier.

More awake.

"…Interesting," Kai whispered.

But the voice—

Didn't sound completely like his anymore.

The leader's eyes sharpened instantly.

"…That's not normal."

Kai smiled slightly.

Without meaning to.

Without wanting to.

"…Yeah."

His hand slowly lifted.

Resting over his chest again.

"…I figured that out too."

The ground beneath him cracked slightly.

Not from force.

From pressure.

Something was leaking out.

Something they could all feel now.

The hunters took another step back.

Even the leader.

For the first time—

They weren't controlling the situation anymore.

Kai was.

Or something through him was.

His vision flickered.

Just for a second.

Darkness again.

Those eyes again.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hungry.

Then back.

Kai inhaled slowly.

"…I think…"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Colder.

"…you should leave."

Silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Then—

The leader made a decision.

"…We're pulling back."

Shock flashed across the others' faces.

"But sir—"

"That's not something we engage without clearance."

His eyes never left Kai.

"…Not like this."

Slowly, carefully, they began to retreat.

Step by step.

Watching him the entire time.

Until distance swallowed them.

Until their presence faded.

Until Kai was alone again.

The moment they disappeared—

His body gave out.

He dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

"…That was close."

But even as he said it—

He knew the truth.

That wasn't the real danger.

Not even close.

Kai's hand tightened over his chest.

His expression darkened.

"…What are you…"

No answer.

Only silence.

Then—

A whisper.

Not from outside.

From within.

Faint.

Ancient.

Clear.

"Not yours."

Kai's eyes widened.

His breathing stopped.

"…What did you just say…"
