Chapter 13 - 013: The Moment I Shouldn't Have Looked

He shouldn't have looked.

The realization came too late.

Because now,

It was closer.

Not just closer.

Here.

Kai's body froze where he stood, his breath caught somewhere between his chest and his throat, refusing to move.

The thing he saw…

It wasn't meant to be seen.

Not clearly.

Not directly.

And yet,

He had.

For just a second.

That was enough.

The air around him thickened.

Not physically.

But it felt heavy.

Wrong.

Like something had settled into place the moment his eyes met it.

"…No."

The word slipped out quietly.

Unsteady.

Because deep down,

He already knew.

This wasn't something he could walk away from anymore.

The presence inside him reacted instantly.

Sharp.

Alert.

"You formed a link."

Kai swallowed.

"…By looking at it."

"Yes."

That simple.

That final.

Kai forced himself to breathe.

Slow.

Controlled.

"…Then I break it."

He turned his head away.

Immediately.

Refusing to look at it again.

For a moment,

Nothing happened.

Then,

The pressure shifted.

Not gone.

But different.

Weaker.

Kai's chest rose slightly.

"…It's not as strong."

"But it is not gone."

The voice was calm.

Certain.

Watching.

Kai clenched his jaw.

"…So it stays as long as I remember it."

Silence.

Then,

"Yes."

Kai exhaled slowly.

"…Of course it does."

His mind raced.

Fast.

Too fast.

This wasn't a fight.

Not something he could punch or cut.

This was something else.

Something that didn't follow normal rules.

He took a step forward.

Then another.

Trying to move away.

Trying to create distance.

But he could still feel it.

Behind him.

Watching.

Attached.

"…You're still there."

No response.

But he didn't need one.

Because the feeling didn't leave.

It lingered.

Like a shadow that didn't belong to light.

The system flickered violently.

[Warning]

[Cognitive Link Detected]

[Host Stability: Decreasing]

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"…Cognitive."

So it wasn't physical.

It wasn't energy.

It was his mind.

That made it worse.

Much worse.

His fingers curled slightly.

"…Then I cut it there."

"You cannot remove it."

The voice responded instantly.

"Only reduce it."

Kai's lips pressed into a thin line.

"…Good enough."

He stopped walking.

Closed his eyes.

Focused.

Not on everything.

Not on the world.

Just on that one moment.

That one second,

When he looked.

He replayed it.

Carefully.

Slowly.

Then.....

He pushed it away.

Not erased.

Not destroyed.

Just blurred.

Like a memory fading at the edges.

The pressure reacted instantly.

It weakened.

Not gone.

But loosened.

Kai inhaled sharply.

"…It's working."

"You are interfering with your own memory."

"…Yeah."

"There will be consequences."

Kai's eyes opened slowly.

Cold.

Focused.

"…There already are."

The air around him steadied slightly.

The weight behind him,

Pulled back.

Just enough.

Just far enough.

Kai took a step forward.

Then another.

This time,

It didn't follow as tightly.

That was enough.

For now.

But something else changed.

His vision flickered.

Just for a second.

And when it came back,

The world wasn't exactly the same.

Lines.

Faint.

Thin.

Cracks in reality.

Barely visible.

But there.

Kai froze.

"…That's new."

"You are seeing more."

That answer came quietly.

Almost… approving.

Kai's eyes scanned the space around him.

Those cracks weren't random.

They moved.

Shifted.

Connected.

Like something existed beneath everything.

Something hidden.

"…This is getting worse."

"Or better."

Kai let out a quiet breath.

"…Depends on how I survive it."

The mark on his arm pulsed faintly.

Darker now.

More defined.

Like it had settled.

Chosen its place.

Kai stared at it.

"…You're part of this too."

No response.

But the feeling remained.

Alive.

Active.

Changing him.

Little by little.

Kai lowered his hand.

His expression hardened.

"…Fine."

His voice came out steady now.

Grounded.

Controlled.

"If everything is changing…"

He took another step forward.

Stronger this time.

"…Then I change with it."

The presence inside him went quiet.

Not resisting.

Not warning.

Watching.

That was new.

Kai didn't like it.

But he accepted it.

Because right now...

He didn't have another choice.

He moved forward again.

Away from the battlefield.

Away from the gate.

Away from what he saw.

But not far enough.

Because even as the pressure faded,

That connection remained.

Faint.

Thin.

Unbreakable.

Kai's voice dropped slightly.

"…You're still there."

This time...

He got a response.

Soft.

Distant.

But real.

"Closer than before."

Kai's breath slowed.

"…Even now."

"Especially now."

His fingers tightened slightly.

"…So I didn't escape it."

"No."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Kai stared ahead.

Unmoving.

Thinking.

Then,

He spoke again.

Quiet.

Careful.

"…What happens if I look again."

The answer came immediately.

No hesitation.

No delay.

"It will see you completely."

Kai's heart stopped.

"…And then."

A pause.

Short.

But heavy enough to matter.

Then....

"You will not be able to look away."

Kai didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Because something inside him,

Understood exactly what that meant.

And for the first time since everything began. ..

He wasn't sure if he wanted to survive it.
