Chapter 10 - 010: I Am Still Me..... Right?

"I am still me… right?"

The thought didn't feel stable.

It slipped.

Like something trying to hold onto an identity that was already breaking apart.

Kai couldn't see.

Couldn't hear.

Couldn't feel his body.

There was only darkness.

Endless.

Heavy.

Alive.

And inside it—

Something moved.

Not far away.

Not outside.

Close.

Too close.

Kai tried to breathe.

Nothing happened.

Tried to move.

Nothing responded.

For a moment—

He wondered if he had already died.

Again.

"…No."

The word formed slowly.

With effort.

"I'm not… done."

Something shifted.

The darkness reacted.

A ripple spread through it, like his will had touched something it wasn't supposed to.

Then—

The voice returned.

Closer than ever before.

"You are changing."

Kai's thoughts snapped toward it instantly.

"…I noticed."

There was no fear in his response.

Only tension.

Only awareness.

The voice didn't sound threatening.

But it didn't sound friendly either.

It sounded… certain.

"You are no longer stable."

Kai clenched something.

Not physically.

But mentally.

"…Then stabilize me."

Silence followed.

A long one.

Then—

"You misunderstand."

The darkness shifted again.

Closer.

Tighter.

Wrapping around him.

"You are not losing control."

Kai's thoughts slowed.

"…Then what is happening."

"You are gaining access."

Something cold ran through him.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

"…To what."

The answer came instantly.

"Us."

The word didn't echo.

It expanded.

Kai felt it.

Not as sound.

But as meaning.

Plural.

Not one.

Never one.

His thoughts shook.

"…There's more than one of you."

No denial.

No confirmation.

Just presence.

That was answer enough.

Kai forced himself to focus.

To hold onto something.

Anything.

"…I'm still me."

He repeated it.

Not because he believed it.

Because he needed to.

The darkness reacted again.

But this time—

Differently.

It didn't press.

It didn't consume.

It observed.

"Define 'me.'"

The question hit harder than anything else so far.

Kai's thoughts stuttered.

"…I…"

His memories surfaced.

Fragments.

His life.

His struggles.

Being weak.

Being ignored.

Being nothing.

"…I'm Kai."

The answer felt smaller than before.

Weaker.

Incomplete.

The voice responded immediately.

"That is a name."

Kai's thoughts tightened.

"…It's who I am."

"It is what you were."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Kai felt something crack.

Not fully.

Not completely.

But enough.

"…Then what am I now."

The darkness shifted.

Closer.

Clearer.

For the first time—

He saw something.

Not fully.

Never fully.

But enough to understand.

Shapes.

Endless.

Layered.

Watching.

Waiting.

All of them focused on him.

"Becoming."

Kai's breath caught.

"…That's not an answer."

"It is the only one that matters."

The pressure increased.

Not crushing.

Not suffocating.

But expanding.

Like something was unfolding inside him.

Kai's thoughts raced.

He needed control.

Needed something real.

Something grounded.

"…System."

The word came out sharp.

Focused.

Immediate.

For a second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

A flicker.

[System Response Delayed]

[Core Function Interference Detected]

Kai's focus sharpened.

"…You're blocking it."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Cold.

Certain.

"We are not interfering."

Kai's thoughts paused.

"…Then why isn't it responding."

A brief silence.

Then—

"Because it cannot see us."

That hit differently.

The system.

Something that could track his condition, his skills, his evolution—

Could not detect whatever this was.

Kai's thoughts slowed.

"…So I'm carrying something the system doesn't understand."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Kai let out something that might have been a laugh.

Or maybe just air escaping his lungs.

"…That sounds like a problem."

"That depends."

Kai's focus sharpened.

"…On what."

"On whether you remain separate."

The words settled.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kai felt it clearly now.

This wasn't about power.

Not just power.

This was about identity.

Control.

Existence.

"…And if I don't."

Silence.

Longer this time.

Then—

"Then you will no longer need to ask who you are."

Kai's chest tightened.

That wasn't comfort.

That wasn't reassurance.

That was a warning.

Or a promise.

He couldn't tell which.

"…I'm not disappearing."

His voice came out stronger this time.

More certain.

More grounded.

"I'm not becoming something else."

The darkness reacted.

Not violently.

But noticeably.

"You already are."

Kai's thoughts snapped.

"…Then I'll decide what I become."

Silence.

Then—

For the first time—

Something changed.

The presence shifted.

Not pressing.

Not observing.

Acknowledging.

"Then survive."

The word hit like a command.

And instantly—

Everything snapped back.

Kai gasped.

Air slammed into his lungs as his body jerked violently, collapsing forward onto solid ground.

Pain returned.

All of it.

At once.

His chest burned.

His limbs trembled.

His vision blurred before slowly stabilizing.

The world returned.

Broken ground.

Distorted space.

And silence.

Kai pushed himself up slowly.

His body felt heavier.

Stronger.

But wrong.

Different.

"…I'm back."

His voice was rough.

Unsteady.

But real.

He looked down at his hands.

Still his.

Still normal.

But he knew better now.

Nothing about him was normal anymore.

The system flickered weakly.

[Status Updating…]

[Error Detected]

[New Classification Pending]

Kai stared at the message.

"…New classification."

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Not for a Rank F hunter.

Not for anyone.

His eyes slowly lifted.

And that was when he noticed it.

The world around him—

Was different.

Not physically.

But subtly.

Distorted.

Like something had shifted just slightly out of place.

And then—

He saw them.

Far away.

Standing at the edge of his vision.

Shapes.

Still.

Watching.

Kai's breath slowed.

"…I'm not alone."

They didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But they were there.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

And somehow—

He knew.

They weren't in the world.

They were seeing him through it.

The voice whispered one last time.

Quiet.

Certain.

"Now they see you."

Kai's heart stopped.

"…Who sees me…"

No answer.
