Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Great Dark

The clock in the corner of Tobi's vision didn't just count down; it bled.

[00:00:58]

The air on the rooftop of the Lagos Citadel was unnaturally still. Below, the sprawling lights of Victoria Island and Lekki pulsed with their usual Sunday evening energy millions of lives connected by invisible threads of fiber optics and satellite signals. None of them knew that the thread was about to be cut.

"Tobi, the signals are starting to wobble," Ama said, her voice tight with a fear she couldn't hide. She was sitting on the edge of a server crate, her laptop's glow reflecting in her wide eyes. "New York is dark. London just blinked out. The 'Global De-sync' is moving like a shadow across the planet."

Tobi didn't look at her. He was staring at the horizon, the silver circuits on his skin glowing with a fierce, steady blue. Through the 'Shadow Ledger', he could see the Consortium's weapon a massive, high-altitude electromagnetic pulse triggered not by a bomb, but by a coordinated crash of the global root servers.

"They think they're resetting the world," Tobi whispered. "But they're just clearing the stage for me."

[00:00:10]

[00:00:09]

"Secure the Hive Mind!" Tobi barked. "Ama, initiate the 'Sovereign Bridge' now!"

[00:00:01]

[00:00:00]

The world died.

It wasn't a bang. It was a sudden, violent silence.

From the roof of the Citadel, Tobi watched as the lights of Lagos vanished in a sweeping wave of darkness. The skyscrapers, the streetlamps, the distant glow of the mainlande verything winked out as the power grids, tied to the digital nodes Silas had compromised, collapsed instantly. The hum of the city, that constant vibration of millions of people, was replaced by a terrifying, heavy quiet.

But beneath Tobi's feet, the Vulture Tower began to hum.

[System Notification: Global De-sync Detected.]

[Status: Offline.]

[Citadel Protocol: 'The Last Lighthouse' ACTIVATED.]

A beam of pure, sapphire light shot from the rooftop dish, piercing the dark sky. The Citadel flared to life, its windows glowing with an internal power that didn't come from the city's grid. It was powered by the collective energy of ten thousand Apex riders, their phones now acting as tiny batteries in a massive, human-powered circuit.

"We're the only ones left," Ama gasped, looking at her screen. It was the only thing in the city still connected to anything. "The internet is gone, Tobi. The banks, the GPS, the emergency services... it's all gone. We're an island."

"An island is where you start a Continent," Tobi said.

[New Quest: 'The Dark Harvest'.]

[Objective: Provide 'Apex-Net' to the city of Lagos.]

[Reward: +500,000 XP; Unlock 'Continental Hub' Status.]

"They wanted to isolate me," Tobi said, walking to the edge of the roof. "They wanted to show the world that without the Consortium, there is only darkness. But they forgot that I've spent the last month building a network of people, not just machines."

Tobi closed his eyes, his consciousness expanding through the 'Hive Mind'. He felt the fear of the riders in the streets below. He felt the panic in the hospitals where the backup generators were failing. He felt the chaos in the markets.

"Open the gates," Tobi commanded.

"Tobi, if we open the network to everyone, the Consortium will find our frequency!" Ama protested.

"Let them find us," Tobi replied. "By the time they do, we'll be too big to delete."

[Skill Activation: 'The Great Broadcast'.]

Suddenly, every phone within a five-mile radius of the Citadel vibrated. People in the pitch-black streets of Lagos pulled out their devices, expecting dead screens. Instead, they saw a single icon: a glowing green and yellow Apex logo.

[WIFI FOUND: APEX-CITADEL]

[PASSWORD: FREEDOM]

In an instant, the darkness was peppered with tiny lights as thousands of people connected. The Citadel didn't just give them internet; it gave them hope. Tobi's face appeared on every screen a broadcast powered by his Level 25 'Sovereign' authority.

"Lagos," Tobi's voice echoed through the city, coming from thousands of phone speakers at once. "The world has gone dark, but Apex is still here. Your money is safe in your Apex-wallets. Your families can be reached through the Apex-link. The Consortium tried to turn off your life. I'm turning it back on."

[System Notification: 100,000 New Nodes Connected.]

[XP Gain: 50,000... 100,000... 200,000!]

[Warning: Physical Strain at 95%. System is overheating.]

Tobi staggered, blood beginning to leak from his ears as he held the massive connection together. He was acting as the literal router for a city of millions. The data pressure was immense, like a river trying to flow through a needle.

"Tobi, you can't hold this!" Ama screamed, running to him as he fell to one knee.

"I have to," Tobi gasped, his skin glowing so brightly it was almost blinding. "If I drop it now... the darkness wins. Silas... Silas is watching. He needs to see... that West Africa... doesn't belong to him."

High above the atmosphere, Silas sat in a darkened command center, his only light coming from a single monitor tracking the 'Global De-sync.' The entire world map was grey, except for one tiny, defiant blue dot in the Gulf of Guinea.

The dot wasn't disappearing. It was growing.

"He's using his own XP to power a city?" Silas whispered, horror dawning on his face. "He's burning his own life force to keep them online. He's insane."

"Send the 'Glitch'," Silas commanded, his voice trembling. "Tell him to forget the XP. Tell him to kill the boy. Now."
