Kai, Mira, and Lira walked out of the underground market into the dark street. The night air felt cool after the hot fights inside. Kai's body was full of power from eight Echoes. His skin felt like metal and stone at the same time. Fire burned softly in his hands if he thought about it. Wind made his steps light.
But his head was a mess.
The voices would not stop talking.
Reginald (rich snob): "My good fellows, we should find a proper inn with fine wine. This street is beneath us."
Jax (fighter): "No! More fights! I want to punch something big!"
Shadow: "Hehehe… let's hide in the dark and watch first."
Razor (mean): "Cut anyone who looks at us wrong."
Stone Fist: "...Strong. Walk slow."
Blaze (fire): "Burn it all if they bother us!"
Gust (wind): "Run! Run fast and free!"
Iron Fang (brutal): "Bite their heads off!"
Kai held his head with both hands. "Shut up! All of you! I am Kai. Just Kai!"
He shouted the last part out loud. It came out as a crazy mix — fancy, angry, sneaky, tough, hot, wild, and brutal. The words sounded like eight people yelling at once.
Mira laughed so hard she almost fell. "Your voice is the best! Like a radio with all stations at the same time!"
Lira did not laugh. She looked at Kai with worried eyes. "The overlap risk is too high now. I can see your fate threads twisting like ropes in a storm. If you take even one more Echo tonight, you may lose control completely."
Kai tried to smile normal. For a second, the real him spoke. "I know, Lira. It feels like a crowded room in my head. But every new Echo makes me stronger. The Veil is still cracking. More monsters will come. I need to be ready."
Then Blaze's temper flared. "Stop worrying, woman! I can burn any problem!"
Kai clapped a hand over his mouth fast. "Sorry. That was not me."
Mira patted his back. "Don't fight the voices. Use them! Mix them for cool moves. Like fire punch with wind dash. Boom!"
They kept walking toward a safer part of the city. The streets were empty. Broken cars and purple crystal pieces lay everywhere from the earlier Veil Quake.
Kai tested his new powers as they walked.
He used wind dash and ran ahead fast like the wind. Then he mixed shadow step and disappeared into a dark alley. Next second he appeared behind Mira and said in Iron Fang's brutal voice, "Got you!"
Mira jumped and laughed. "See? Fun!"
Lira stayed quiet. She sometimes raised her hand and thin silver threads appeared in the air. She read the future threads to check for danger.
After ten minutes, Kai's body started to feel tired. Eight Echoes used a lot of energy.
"I need to rest soon," he said. This time the voice was almost normal, but Stone Fist made it slow and deep. "Find… place… sleep."
They found an old empty building with a strong door. Mira kicked it open. Inside was a small room with some old chairs and a table. No monsters. No people.
"Good enough," Lira said. "We rest here tonight. Tomorrow we leave the city. The underground market will bring more trouble if we stay."
They sat down. Mira took out some bread and water from her small bag. "Here. Eat. Collectors need food too!"
Kai ate slowly. The food tasted normal, but Reginald kept whispering, "One expects better than this dry bread."
He ignored it.
As he ate, a blue screen popped up.
**[Status Update]**
**Fractured Echo Weaver – Level 4**
**Active Echoes: 8/10**
**Overlap Risk: 78% – Critical**
**Warning: Voices may take full control for short times. Random personality swaps expected.**
**New Bonus: Basic Echo Merge unlocked. You can mix two Echoes for stronger skills. Try it.**
Kai's eyes lit up. "Merge? That sounds good."
He tried to merge Blaze Fire and Gust Wind in his mind.
Suddenly his hands glowed with spinning fire and wind. A small fire tornado formed above his palm.
"Cool!" Mira said. "Throw it!"
Kai threw the fire tornado at the far wall. It hit and burned a hole with strong wind force. The room shook a little.
"Nice," Lira said. "But be careful. Merging may make the overlap worse."
Kai felt proud. But right after, Razor's mean voice took over. "Weak wall. I could cut it better."
Then he switched to Reginald. "Indeed. A proper gentleman would have better aim."
Kai groaned and lay on the floor. "This is exhausting."
Mira sat next to him. "Tell me about your first life. Before you died. Were you always this funny?"
Kai thought for a moment. The real memories came up between the voices. "I was a game tester. I sat in a dark room all day. Tested bad games. Low pay. No friends really. Then the sky broke and a beam crushed me. I died… and woke up like this."
Lira listened quietly. "The Veil chose you for a reason. Your power is not normal. It is broken on purpose. The gods are using people like tools. You steal Echoes… maybe you can steal from the gods one day."
Kai sat up. "That sounds big. Right now I just want to survive and not go crazy."
They talked for a while. Mira told funny stories about collecting Echo cards from crazy fighters. Lira shared a little about the Veil Breakers — a group that wanted to close the cracks and stop the gods.
Kai felt calm for the first time. The voices became quieter when he focused on his real self.
But the calm did not last.
A loud roar came from outside. The building shook.
Mira jumped up. "Monster! Big one!"
Lira's threads appeared. "Many of them. A pack. They followed the power from your fights."
Kai stood fast. All eight Echoes woke up excited.
"Let's go," he said. His voice was a mix again, but he did not care now.
They ran outside.
Three big shadow beasts waited in the street. They were taller than before, with red eyes and sharp claws. More small monsters ran behind them.
Kai felt his blood pump. "Perfect. More Echoes."
He used wind dash and shadow step together. He became a fast moving shadow with wind around him. He appeared in front of the first big beast and punched with fire + stone skin.
The punch burned and hit hard. The beast screamed and fell back.
Mira threw her glowing cards. Each card exploded on the small monsters. "Collect! Collect!"
Lira used her silver threads to tie the legs of one beast. "Kai, the neck is weak!"
Kai jumped high with wind. He merged knife sense and Iron Fang's brutal bite feeling. His hand became sharp like a blade. He cut the beast's neck deep.
Black smoke poured out. The beast turned into purple mist.
A strong pull hit Kai.
**High quality Echo detected.**
He touched the mist before it disappeared.
**[New Echo Found!]**
**Name: Alpha Shadow**
**Skills: Strong claws, pack leader roar, dark armor**
**Personality: Leader type – commands others**
**Will you take it? (Y/N)**
Kai chose Y. He was too excited to stop.
Power flooded him. His claws grew a little on his fingers. He felt like he could lead a group of fighters.
**[Echo Taken!]**
**Active Echoes: 9/10**
**New Skill: Shadow Claw and Pack Roar unlocked.**
**Side Effect: You may want to command people and act like a boss.**
Kai roared loud with the new power. The roar was deep and strong. The small monsters around paused for a second.
Mira cheered. "Nine! You are close to full!"
Lira shouted, "Kai! Stop taking! Your risk is too high!"
But one more beast charged at Lira.
Kai moved fast. He used all his merged powers — wind + shadow + fire + stone + claw. He became a spinning storm of fire and darkness. He hit the beast hard and killed it in one combo.
Another Echo pull came, but he pushed it away this time. "Not now."
The last big beast ran away with the small ones.
The street became quiet again.
Kai breathed hard. Nine Echoes now. His body felt powerful, but his mind was spinning. The voices were louder than ever.
He suddenly stood straight and spoke like a leader. "Everyone, form a line! We move as a pack!"
Mira saluted playfully. "Yes, boss Kai!"
Lira shook her head. "See? The new Echo is already changing you."
Kai blinked and shook his head hard. "Sorry. I did not mean that."
He looked at his hands. Claws. Fire. Metal skin. Wind around his feet.
He was much stronger than when he woke up in the morgue. But he also felt like nine different people lived in his body.
Mira yawned. "Let's go back inside and sleep. Tomorrow we can find a better place. Maybe leave the city like Lira said."
They went back to the old building.
Kai lay down in the corner. The voices argued about who should sleep first.
He closed his eyes and whispered to himself, "I am Kai Voss. Game tester. Not a rich snob. Not a fighter. Not a monster."
But deep down he knew it was getting harder to believe that.
Outside, the sky cracked again with purple light. Another Veil Quake was coming soon.
Kai smiled in the dark.
More chaos meant more Echoes.
More power.
And maybe… more trouble for who he used to be.
