Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: When Shadows Move

The room was still.

Too still.

Daniel stood where the fight had ended.

Three instructors on the ground.

Silence in the air.

"You held back."

The voice came from behind him.

Daniel didn't turn.

"Did I?" he asked calmly.

The man stepped closer.

"You could have ended it faster."

A pause.

"But you chose not to."

Daniel finally turned slightly.

"I'm still learning," he said.

The man smiled faintly.

"No," he replied.

"You're remembering."

That made Daniel's eyes narrow.

Before he could respond—

An alarm suddenly rang.

Sharp.

Loud.

Urgent.

Everyone froze.

The woman's expression changed instantly.

"What is it?" she demanded.

A voice came through the system:

"Unauthorized movement detected."

A pause.

"Sector 3 breach."

The room shifted into motion.

People rushed.

Commands were given.

Daniel stood still.

Watching.

Thinking.

"Stay here," the woman said sharply.

Daniel didn't move.

But his eyes…

Had already changed.

Meanwhile…

Lena's heart pounded.

"You shouldn't have read that."

The man stepped out of the shadows.

Tall.

Calm.

Dangerous.

"Who are you?" Lena asked, her voice unsteady.

The man didn't answer immediately.

His eyes dropped to the notebook in her hand.

"Give that to me."

Lena stepped back.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

He smiled.

"That wasn't a request."

Lena's grip tightened.

"Stay away from me."

The man sighed softly.

"You don't understand what you're involved in."

"Then explain it!" she snapped.

Silence.

Then—

He stepped closer.

"Daniel made a choice," he said.

A pause.

"And now… you're part of the consequences."

Lena's heart raced.

"I don't care," she said.

"I just want to know where he is!"

The man's expression hardened.

"You're not supposed to."

He moved.

Fast.

Lena gasped—

Turning quickly—

Running.

Footsteps echoed behind her.

He was faster.

Much faster.

Her breath came in short bursts as she ran through the empty street.

"Help!" she shouted.

But no one answered.

The city suddenly felt…

Too quiet.

Too empty.

A hand grabbed her arm.

She screamed—

But before anything else could happen—

A car screeched to a stop.

Lights flashing.

The man paused.

Just for a second.

Enough.

Lena pulled free—

Stumbling back.

The car door opened.

"Get in!"

A voice called out.

She didn't think.

Didn't hesitate.

She jumped in.

The door slammed shut.

And the car sped off.

Lena turned back—

Her heart racing—

The man stood in the road.

Watching.

Not chasing.

Just watching.

Like this wasn't over.

Back at the facility…

Daniel stood alone.

The alarm still ringing faintly in the background.

But something else…

Something deeper…

Was pulling at him.

A feeling.

Sharp.

Sudden.

Wrong.

His eyes darkened.

"…Lena."

The name slipped out before he could stop it.

And for the first time since he arrived—

Daniel moved…

Without being told.

Who saved Lena... And what do they want?
