Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18: “THE HIGHER NODE” — TOBI’S ENCOUNTER

Tobi's platform went silent.

Not the normal kind of silence.

This one had weight—like sound itself had been removed from existence.

The floating bridge beneath him stopped shifting.

Even the distant cracks in the arena seemed to freeze mid-motion.

Tobi exhaled slowly.

"…Okay. That's new."

A soft tone echoed through the space.

Not the teacher's voice.

Something deeper.

Older.

"UNREGISTERED VARIABLE DETECTED."

Tobi looked around casually.

"Yeah, that would be me."

The air in front of him distorted.

Then split.

A vertical seam opened—like reality being unzipped.

From it, something stepped out.

Not a creature.

Not a student.

A tall, fragmented figure made of layered light patterns, constantly rearranging itself like a broken hologram trying to stabilize.

Its presence pressed down on the space around Tobi.

Tobi didn't move.

"…So you're the upgrade."

The entity tilted slightly.

"YOU ARE NOT IN THE DATABASE."

Tobi smirked.

"Good. I hate being on lists."

A pulse erupted from the entity.

The platform beneath Tobi cracked instantly.

He jumped back just in time, landing lightly on a floating fragment.

The entity didn't chase.

It simply observed him.

Like a scanner.

Tobi sighed.

"Let me guess… you're what runs this place?"

A pause.

Then—

"I AM A HIGHER NODE.""I CORRECT ERRORS."

Tobi's eyes narrowed slightly now.

"…So David's an error."

The entity flickered.

"CONFIRMED."

Tobi chuckled softly.

"Yeah… I figured."

The higher node moved closer without walking—just reappearing in space, closing distance instantly.

Tobi barely tilted his head as a beam of structured energy passed where his face used to be.

Behind him, the floating bridge disintegrated.

Tobi whistled low.

"Okay. You're actually serious."

The entity raised its hand.

The space around Tobi began to compress.

Like reality was trying to fold him out of existence.

Tobi's expression finally sharpened.

"…Alright then."

He lifted one finger.

A thin pulse of energy snapped outward—not loud, not explosive.

Just precise.

The compression stopped.

For a fraction of a second.

The higher node paused.

"…INTERFERENCE?"

Tobi smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"I interfere a lot."

Then he moved.

Not toward it.

Around it.

Too fast to track properly.

The higher node's body flickered as it attempted to recalibrate.

But Tobi was already behind it.

He spoke quietly.

"You're not the top of the system, are you?"

The entity turned slowly.

"I AM ABOVE YOUR UNDERSTANDING."

Tobi shrugged.

"Yeah… that's usually what the second layer says."

A silence.

Then the higher node expanded—its form splitting into dozens of rotating fragments of light.

The space around them began collapsing into structured grids.

"ERROR CONTAINMENT INITIATED."

Tobi sighed again.

"…I really hoped this would be easier."

He raised both hands slightly.

And for the first time—

The system reacted to him differently.

Not as a student.

Not as a subject.

But as a threat it couldn't categorize.

Tobi whispered:

"Let's see who updates first."

And the battle began.
