The Core Entity raised both hands.
Energy gathered around it, dense and overwhelming. The air grew heavy, like the entire arena was about to collapse inward.
Pearl's barrier flickered. "We can't block this…"
Collin took a step back. "We can't even dodge that."
Sharon's red aura flared wildly, unstable again. "Then we hit it first."
Tobi didn't move. He was watching the energy build, calculating. "No. That attack covers the entire field."
David clenched his fist.
He could see the system again. The energy gathering wasn't random. It was structured, controlled, locked into a pattern.
But it was too much.
Even for him.
"…We're too slow," he said quietly.
The Core Entity spoke.
"ERASURE SEQUENCE INITIATED."
The energy surged.
The ground beneath them cracked apart as the attack began to descend.
And then
Everything stopped.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
The light froze mid-air.
The cracks in the ground held their shape.
Even the Core Entity paused, its massive form locked in place.
No one moved.
No one understood.
Collin blinked. "Okay… what just happened?"
Tobi's eyes narrowed slightly.
"…That wasn't us."
A soft sound echoed behind them.
A single step.
Calm.
Unhurried.
They all turned.
Someone was standing there.
She hadn't been there before.
A girl.
Same uniform.
But untouched.
No damage. No strain. No fear.
Her presence felt… wrong.
Not powerful in a loud way like Sharon.
Not controlled like Tobi.
Just… certain.
She looked at the frozen Core Entity for a moment.
Then at them.
"You're all struggling too much," she said.
Sharon frowned. "Who are you?"
The girl tilted her head slightly.
"Desire."
Silence followed.
Collin whispered, "She just walked into a frozen attack like it's nothing…"
Pearl stared. "How is everything stopped?"
Desire didn't answer immediately.
She stepped forward, passing through the suspended energy like it wasn't there.
"It's not stopped," she said calmly.
"It's just… waiting."
David's eyes widened slightly.
"…You interfered with the system."
Desire glanced at him.
A small, knowing look.
"Not interfered," she said.
"Paused."
Tobi let out a quiet breath.
"…So you're not normal either."
Desire ignored the comment and looked back at the Core Entity.
"It adapts to everything you do," she said. "That's why you're losing."
Sharon crossed her arms. "We weren't losing."
Desire looked at her.
Not annoyed.
Not impressed.
Just direct.
"You were about to be erased."
That shut everyone up.
David stepped closer.
"You know how it works," he said.
It wasn't a question.
Desire nodded slightly.
"I've seen this phase before."
Pearl blinked. "Before…?"
Desire didn't explain.
Instead, she raised her hand slightly.
The frozen energy around them shifted.
Just a little.
"As long as it learns from your actions, you can't win by attacking it the same way."
Tobi smirked faintly. "So we change the rules."
Desire looked at him.
"Or we stop playing by them."
The Core Entity began to move again.
Slowly.
The pause was ending.
Cracks formed in the frozen space.
"EXTERNAL INTERFERENCE DETECTED."
Its focus shifted.
Not to David this time.
To Desire.
"UNREGISTERED VARIABLE."
Desire lowered her hand.
"Now it's interested," she said.
Collin stepped back. "That thing just upgraded its target…"
Sharon's energy flared again. "Good. Let it try."
David looked at Desire.
"What do we do?"
For the first time, she smiled slightly.
"Nothing complicated."
A pause.
"We break it before it understands us."
The Core Entity moved again.
Faster than before.
But this time
They were ready.
