The Core Entity was no longer holding its original form.
The cracks David and the others created did not close this time. Instead, they spread deeper across its body, glowing with unstable light. The entire structure of the arena trembled as if the system itself was struggling to remain stable.
David stood firm, watching carefully.
"It is not repairing properly anymore," he said.
Tobi nodded slightly. "Because we pushed it past its adaptation limit."
Sharon's red energy was still active, but now it was calmer, more controlled than before. "So it finally breaks?"
Pearl stayed close, her barrier weaker but still active. "Or it becomes something worse."
Collin frowned. "It can become worse?"
Desire answered before anyone else could. "Yes."
Everyone turned to her.
She was watching the Core Entity closely, but her expression had changed. It was no longer just observation. It was concern.
"When a system reaches instability," she said, "it does not die immediately. It restructures itself."
The Core Entity began to move again, but slowly, unevenly. Its body was no longer smooth or unified. It looked like multiple layers were fighting for control inside it.
Then the voice returned, but it was distorted now.
"ERROR… CORE STABILITY COMPROMISED…"
The arena shook harder.
David's eyes narrowed. "It is collapsing internally."
Tobi stepped forward slightly. "Or evolving."
The Core Entity raised its head.
For the first time, it did not attack immediately. Instead, the space around it began to fold inward. The system itself was pulling energy into it.
Pearl stepped back. "That is not normal recovery…"
Desire's voice became quieter. "It is not recovery. It is rebooting."
Sharon frowned. "Rebooting what?"
Desire hesitated for a moment before answering.
"The layer above this one."
A heavy silence followed.
Collin blinked. "There is more above this?"
David did not take his eyes off the Core Entity. "There is always another layer."
The Core Entity suddenly stopped shaking. Its form stabilized again, but it was different now. Sharper. More refined. Less unstable.
Then it spoke again, clearly this time.
"CORE ENTITY RESTRUCTURE COMPLETE."
Tobi's expression tightened. "It adapted."
Sharon stepped forward slightly. "So we just made it stronger?"
Desire shook her head. "Not stronger. Higher."
The Core Entity looked directly at them.
"SUBJECT DATA UPDATED."
"INITIATING FINAL TRANSITION PHASE."
The space around them began to change again, but this time it was not random. It was controlled. Precise. The arena was dissolving, layer by layer, revealing something deeper beneath it.
David felt it immediately.
"This is not the same system anymore."
Pearl looked around nervously. "Then what is it now?"
Desire answered softly.
"The true system."
The Core Entity raised its hand slowly.
"YOU ARE NO LONGER IN A TEST."
A pause.
"YOU ARE IN THE SELECTION PROCESS."
The ground beneath them split open.
Not into darkness.
But into structured space.
Layered grids. Controlled environments. Endless systems stretching beyond sight.
Collin took a step back. "Okay… I officially hate this place."
Sharon clenched her fist. "We just beat one level and it turns into another?"
Tobi looked down into the structure. "We never beat anything. We just unlocked it."
David's expression hardened.
"This is the real system," he said.
Desire nodded.
"And now it knows you exist."
The Core Entity began to sink back into the structure below them, no longer fighting them, but integrating into something larger.
Before it disappeared completely, it spoke one last time.
"FINAL SELECTION: PREPARATION COMPLETE."
Then it was gone.
The space around them stabilized, but it no longer felt like victory.
It felt like an entry point.
Something much bigger had just opened.
