The hesitation did not last long.
The system recovered quickly, but something had changed in how it responded to them. The reaction field in front of them was no longer behaving like a separate training construct. It had started merging their combined inputs into a single evaluation process.
David felt it first. The system was no longer reading them individually or even as a synchronized group. It was reading them as a single evolving structure.
"This is new," he said quietly.
Sharon stayed in formation beside him, still focused. "It feels like it is watching us differently now."
Pearl adjusted her stance carefully. "It is not just reacting anymore. It is analyzing us as one unit."
Collin looked uneasy. "I do not like being called a unit."
Tobi did not move. His attention was fully locked on the shifting structure ahead. "It is beyond classification now. The system cannot place us in existing categories."
Desire nodded slightly. "That is correct."
The structure in front of them shifted again, but this time it did not attack immediately. Instead, it expanded outward, forming a wide scanning field that passed over all of them at once.
The system voice returned, but it sounded unstable, as if multiple processes were speaking at the same time.
"ANALYSIS FAILED… RECLASSIFICATION REQUIRED…"
The environment around them flickered. The overlapping zones, the resonance field, and the reaction structure all began collapsing inward into a single point of evaluation.
David narrowed his eyes. "It is trying to rebuild its classification system around us."
Sharon frowned. "So what are we now?"
Before anyone could answer, the system responded directly.
"SUBJECT GROUP: UNDEFINED."
A pause followed.
"SUBJECT GROUP: NON-CLASSIFIABLE."
Collin blinked. "That sounds like a polite way of saying it does not understand us."
Pearl looked uneasy. "Is that dangerous?"
Desire answered without hesitation. "Yes."
The system continued.
"INITIATING ANOMALY CONFIRMATION PROTOCOL."
The entire space around them tightened instantly.
The reaction field collapsed inward, not attacking but compressing reality itself around their position. The pressure increased rapidly, forcing them to hold their synchronization just to stay stable.
David stepped forward slightly, resisting the pressure. "It is trying to isolate the anomaly state."
Tobi nodded. "If it isolates us, it can reset classification safely."
Sharon clenched her fists. "Then we do not let it isolate us."
Pearl struggled slightly under the pressure. "I cannot reinforce properly under this load."
Collin looked around. "Everything is getting tighter. It is like the space is shrinking."
Desire remained calm, but her eyes were focused now. "This is the final containment response of this layer."
David looked at her. "Containment?"
Desire nodded. "When a system cannot classify a subject, it does not always adapt. Sometimes it contains."
The system voice deepened.
"ANOMALY CONTAINMENT INITIATED."
The compression intensified again.
The synchronized field around them began to strain. Their unity was being tested under direct pressure, not through attacks but through structural collapse.
David gritted his teeth. "Hold the link. Do not break it."
Sharon nodded. "I am not letting go."
Pearl reinforced what little space she could, stabilizing fragments of the collapsing field. "I am still with you."
Collin forced himself to stay focused. "Okay, okay, I am synchronized, I am synchronized."
Tobi closed his eyes briefly. "Maintain intent alignment. Do not react individually."
Desire finally moved forward slightly, placing herself at the center of their formation.
"You are being evaluated for termination-level classification," she said calmly.
Sharon looked at her sharply. "Termination?"
Desire nodded.
"If the system cannot resolve what you are, it will remove the contradiction."
A pause followed.
David's expression hardened. "Then we do not give it contradiction."
Tobi opened his eyes. "We give it stability."
Pearl understood immediately. "A unified output."
Collin exhaled. "So basically, we stop being weird."
David shook his head slightly. "We stop being separate."
The system pressure increased again, pushing harder against their combined field.
"ANOMALY CONTAINMENT AT 80 PERCENT."
Sharon stepped forward slightly. "Then we finish this."
David looked at all of them.
"Complete synchronization," he said.
No hesitation followed.
They moved together again, but this time the alignment was deeper. It was not just coordinated action anymore. It was shared intent at the moment of execution.
The system reacted instantly.
"CRITICAL ANOMALY STATE CONFIRMED."
The containment field began to crack.
Desire watched closely.
"It is recognizing something new," she said quietly.
The system voice returned, but now it was no longer fully controlled.
"ANOMALY GROUP… ACCEPTED."
A pause.
"UPGRADE PATH DETECTED."
The pressure around them suddenly stopped increasing.
Instead, it shifted.
The system was no longer trying to contain them.
It was trying to elevate them.
