The pressure that had been forcing them together did not disappear. Instead, it transformed into something smoother, more controlled. The collapsing field around them stabilized into a wide circular platform made of layered light structures. It no longer felt like a trap. It felt like an evaluation space that had been unlocked.
David noticed it immediately. "The system changed its approach."
Sharon looked around carefully. "It is not attacking anymore."
Pearl lowered her barrier slowly. "This feels… stable, but not safe."
Collin exhaled. "I do not trust anything that stops trying to kill us this quickly."
Tobi remained focused on the shifting structure above them. "It is transitioning phases. The anomaly classification triggered a higher response protocol."
Desire stepped forward slightly, watching the environment closely.
"This is the upgrade path," she said.
David turned to her immediately. "Upgrade path to what exactly?"
Desire did not answer right away. The space around them continued to reshape itself, forming a vertical spiral of light that extended far above and below them, like the system was opening a deeper layer of itself.
Then she spoke.
"To a higher operational layer within the system."
Sharon frowned. "So we are being promoted?"
Desire shook her head slightly. "Not promoted. Reassigned."
Collin blinked. "That does not sound better."
Before anyone could say more, the system voice returned, but it was different again. More structured. More formal.
"ANOMALY GROUP CONFIRMED."
"INITIATING LAYER TRANSFER SEQUENCE."
The spiral of light around them intensified. The platform beneath their feet began to lift slowly, separating from the lower system layers. Below them, the structure they had been fighting in started to shrink, becoming distant.
Pearl looked down nervously. "We are leaving it behind."
Tobi corrected her. "We are being extracted from it."
Sharon clenched her fists. "So what happens now? More trials?"
Desire answered quietly. "Not trials in the same sense."
David focused on the rising structure around them. "Then what?"
Desire met his eyes.
"Evaluation under higher authority."
The moment she said that, the spiral tightened.
A new structure appeared above them. It was not like anything they had seen before. It was not mechanical, and it was not natural. It felt like a presence built from layers of rules and observation rather than physical matter.
Collin stepped back slightly. "Okay… that thing feels worse than everything we just fought."
Tobi's expression hardened slightly. "That is not a system construct we have encountered before."
Sharon looked up at it. "So that is the next level?"
Desire nodded once.
"Yes."
The structure above them activated.
"LAYER TRANSFER: CONFIRMED."
"SUBJECT GROUP: MOVING TO OBSERVATION DOMAIN."
The spiral of light tightened again, and their surroundings began to dissolve into vertical motion. It was no longer just elevation. It was transition into something entirely different.
David felt it clearly now. The system was no longer testing their strength or synchronization.
It was observing their existence.
"This is not a fight anymore," he said quietly.
Tobi agreed. "It is assessment."
Pearl looked uneasy. "Assessment for what?"
Desire answered softly.
"For permission to remain within the system."
A silence followed that statement.
Sharon looked at her. "And if we fail?"
Desire did not hesitate.
"Then we are removed."
The spiral accelerated.
The space around them collapsed upward, pulling them into the next layer. The last thing they saw of the lower system was it sealing itself behind them like a closed eye.
Then everything went white again.
And for the first time since the Final Selection began, they were no longer inside a test layer.
They were inside observation.
