Chapter 4 - Chapter 04

There was another aspect of this game that players were only finding out once they had fully entered it themselves. It was another aspect where the idea of what players deciding everything really meant when a developer was truly serious and literal about it.

As if players deciding everything had made so that there were no:

No NPCs of any kind within the game

No limitless inventory or even a version of the finite version

No starting gear to start out with

No random chests and/or boxes that contain items

Then the next shock that came to them was that there were no classes or jobs either that they would just have from the very start, or could just pick up within the game itself. As everyone was discovering that while weapons, gear, and even a magic system existed within the game, the game was not just handing it out to them on a silver platter either. As that too was being considered a player choice, why choose that for them instead of merely letting them decide what those things would be themselves?

The realization that this was happening was the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of players, as they wanted the unlimited freedom of a game that was supposed to be purely player driven, where all their decisions would matter. However, what they did not realize was that Kynatech was not playing around, as they took unlimited and purely player driven, not just literally but extremely literally. To the point where they had too much freedom, as too much of anything is a bad thing after all. How would too much freedom in a game be considered a bad thing? That was rather simple, actually. It was the same way, too much water or even too much oxygen was, as everything, no matter what it was, has a dose where it goes from being helpful to even mundane to harmful and a danger. It was, to put another way, how anything can be a poison if given in the right dosage, as determining that dosage is the up to the creator to do.

Kynatech had clearly and repeatedly stated that the game was over and over again. They made sure to drill home the exact type of game they had made without any lies or falsehood being stated at all. They also avoided misdirection, being very clear about what they were present for. It was not their fault that anyone else assumed something different just because that how things normally go, how everything else went, or what everyone else would have expected of them. Kynatech was not being everyone else, nor did they want to be everyone else when it came to Decagon after all. They stated clearly, bluntly, and without hold back exactly what this game was. Thus, like the many times before, the players were at fault for not taking what they were presented seriously and placing expectations that were not present in the game itself.

If someone wanted to become a sword user, then they had to literally find a sword and then learn how to use it from square one. As part of the promotion material that they got for this game was that they would experience a game with classes and jobs like no other game before it, where learning would be on a whole other level compared to other games, as the unlimited freedom to do whatever one wants would be present there. If one could think of a class or job they wanted, then they could make it a reality themselves. As this was no lie, as they had unlimited freedom and knowledge to make whatever class and/or job they wanted. It is just that in other games, where they were given a finished product and told to create whatever they wanted within the bounds of what they were given, in Decagon, in this game, they were not given a finished product but instead merely the tools and building blocks to make everything themselves.

Detailed knowledge about everything and anything they wanted to know about numerous topics, to even the magic system of this world, was present for them in numerous ways. They just had to actually go and read it all themselves. Then, through research, trial and error, and the other steps, create the class and/or job they always wanted, exactly how they wanted it. No developer could create someone ideal, truly, so rather than attempting and falling short, leave it to the person themselves to do it themselves, as then the only one to blame would be themselves, as they were given all the tools and materials needed to achieve their own dreams and goals.

Of course, there were many who did not vibe with this and chose to quit the game as well. That was part of the freedom they were given with this game, as the freedom to play or not play was an important aspect of it as well. As that was freedom they were 'blessed' with, as that was also an expression of player choice deciding the game itself.

To play or not to play, that is the question!

One that every player was given the choice as the first real major choice that they must make when it comes to this game, the Decagon. If player choice is to truly matter at all levels and be the ultimate choice as well, then the very act of playing the game itself must be included in that by all means. To leave that choice out would be unthinkable, as how could they claim it is what it is if the player does not willingly choose to play a game such as itself on their own terms and in their own way, mind you. Such a thing is what would be an oversight of such unbearable degree that they would not be able to make the numerous and various claims they had about it with their chests out and their heads held high after all. And so that was the game they were given, as it was on which they had to make this choice, and once they had, there would be no going back until they had fully seen it through. They were told one final time before signing on the dotted line that once they started the Decagon, there would be no going back.
