The forest had grown quiet again.
But it wasn't the peaceful kind of quiet.
It was the kind that made the air feel heavy… like something unseen was moving just beyond the shadows.
Lyra could feel it.
Ever since her first shift, her senses had changed.
Everything felt sharper.
Stronger.
More intense.
The scent of wet leaves.
The distant rustle of animals moving through the trees.
Even the faint wind brushing past her skin felt different.
Her wolf was awake now.
Truly awake.
And it refused to ignore danger.
Lyra crossed her arms as she studied Kieran Vale.
He stood calmly across from her, leaning slightly against a tree like none of this was unusual.
Sienna, however, was clearly uncomfortable.
She kept glancing between Lyra and the stranger.
Finally she whispered,
"Lyra… are we sure we should trust him?"
Lyra wasn't sure.
Something about Kieran felt strange.
But not dangerous.
Her wolf wasn't growling at him.
And right now, that instinct mattered more than anything.
Lyra looked back at him.
"You said you came to warn me."
Kieran nodded.
"Yes."
"Then explain something to me."
His eyebrow lifted slightly.
"What?"
Lyra's voice sharpened.
"What exactly am I?"
For a moment, Kieran didn't answer.
Instead, he pushed himself away from the tree and slowly walked a few steps closer.
The moonlight revealed something in his eyes.
Not fear.
Not curiosity.
Recognition.
"You're something most wolves thought no longer existed," he said quietly.
Lyra's chest tightened.
"The Moonborn," she whispered.
Kieran nodded.
"Yes."
Sienna frowned.
"Okay… I keep hearing that word tonight."
She looked between them.
"Can someone explain what that actually means?"
Lyra turned to Kieran.
He sighed softly.
"I suppose you deserve the full truth."
The wind rustled through the trees as he spoke.
"Thousands of years ago, before packs divided the land… there was a wolf chosen by the moon itself."
Lyra listened carefully.
"That wolf wasn't just stronger than the others," Kieran continued.
"She was their ruler."
"All wolves answered to her."
Sienna's eyes widened.
"Like… the Alpha of all Alphas?"
Kieran nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
Lyra felt something stir deep inside her chest.
"And that wolf was called the Moonborn."
The name seemed to echo through the forest.
"But the Moonborn didn't just rule through power," Kieran continued.
"She kept balance."
"Between packs."
"Between wolves and humans."
"Between strength and destruction."
Sienna looked thoughtful.
"So what happened to her?"
Kieran's expression darkened.
"War."
Lyra frowned.
"What kind of war?"
"The kind wolves still whisper about but never speak of openly."
He looked toward the distant mountains.
"A war between powerful Alphas who wanted the Moonborn's power for themselves."
Lyra's stomach twisted.
"That sounds familiar."
Kieran gave her a knowing look.
"Yes."
"History tends to repeat itself."
Sienna crossed her arms nervously.
"So what happened after the war?"
Kieran hesitated before answering.
"The Moonborn disappeared."
Lyra blinked.
"Disappeared?"
"Some say she died," Kieran said quietly.
"Others believe she simply vanished… waiting for the right moment to return."
Sienna looked at Lyra slowly.
"And now… Lyra is that return?"
Kieran didn't answer immediately.
But his eyes said everything.
Lyra exhaled slowly.
"This is insane."
Her mind struggled to process everything.
"I'm not some ancient ruler."
"I was just… a normal wolf yesterday."
Kieran tilted his head slightly.
"You were never normal."
Lyra gave a small bitter laugh.
"Tell that to Alpha Kael."
The name hung in the air.
For a moment no one spoke.
Kieran studied her expression carefully.
"So he rejected you."
Lyra's jaw tightened.
"Yes."
"And that rejection broke the mate bond."
Lyra nodded once.
Kieran sighed quietly.
"Then he may have made the biggest mistake of his life."
Far away inside the territory of the Moonridge Pack Territory, Alpha Kael suddenly froze mid-step.
The night air felt heavy.
His wolf growled uneasily inside his mind.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Since rejecting Lyra Moonborn, the bond between them should have vanished.
But instead…
It kept pulsing.
Like an invisible thread refusing to break.
Kael clenched his fists.
"Why won't it disappear?" he muttered.
Behind him, Beta Ronan approached carefully.
"Alpha?"
Kael turned.
"What is it?"
Ronan looked uneasy.
"Scouts reported something strange tonight."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"Strange how?"
"They heard a howl."
"That's not unusual."
Ronan shook his head.
"No… not like this."
He hesitated.
"The wolves who heard it said it didn't sound like any wolf they've ever heard before."
Kael's chest tightened slightly.
"And?"
Ronan's voice lowered.
"They said it sounded… ancient."
Kael felt a cold chill creep down his spine.
Because deep down…
He already knew who that howl belonged to.
Back in the forest, Lyra sat down on a fallen log.
Her mind was spinning.
"So if I'm really this 'Moonborn'…"
She looked up at Kieran.
"What happens now?"
Kieran didn't hesitate.
"Now the powerful wolves start searching for you."
Sienna groaned.
"That's exactly what we didn't want to hear."
Kieran continued calmly.
"And one of them has already begun."
Lyra felt the same uneasy chill again.
"Alpha Darius," she said.
Kieran nodded.
"Yes."
"He rules the Bloodfang Pack."
Sienna frowned.
"Why is everyone so scared of this guy?"
Kieran's expression hardened.
"Because he doesn't believe in balance."
"What does he believe in?" Lyra asked.
"Power."
The single word hung heavy in the air.
"If Darius captures you," Kieran continued quietly,
"He won't just use your strength."
"He'll use you to control every pack in the region."
Lyra felt anger rise inside her.
"Then he's not getting the chance."
Kieran gave a faint smile.
"That's the spirit."
But before anyone could say anything else—
Lyra's wolf suddenly growled.
Loud.
Sharp.
Danger.
Lyra jumped to her feet.
"What is it?" Sienna asked.
Lyra's eyes scanned the darkness.
"They're here."
Kieran's posture immediately changed.
"Who?"
Lyra's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Hunters."
At that exact moment, several glowing red eyes appeared between the trees.
Watching.
Waiting.
Surrounding them.
Kieran cursed under his breath.
"Looks like we're out of time."
Lyra felt the power inside her surge again.
Her wolf pushed forward eagerly.
Ready for another fight.
The hunters slowly stepped into the clearing.
Large wolves.
Dark fur.
Cold eyes.
And on their shoulders were the marks of the Bloodfang Pack.
Sienna's voice trembled.
"Lyra… please tell me you can do that glowing wolf thing again."
Lyra's silver eyes flashed.
Her wolf growled deeply.
"Oh… I can."
And this time—
She was ready for them.
