Chapter 12 - Chapter 14:Ashes And Silver Eyes

The Alpha house was quiet. Too quiet.

Kael carried Lyra through the front doors, her body limp and trembling in his arms. The pack members who had gathered around immediately fell silent at the sight of their Alpha's mate—pale, wounded, but glowing faintly with that unnatural silver energy.

Sienna rushed forward, worry etched across her face.

"Lyra… you're alive!" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Lyra didn't respond. Her silver eyes were closed, but faint pulses of light shimmered across her skin, casting eerie shadows on the walls.

Kael gently laid her on the large bed in the center of the room. He kneeled beside her, placing a hand lightly over her chest.

"Stay with me," he murmured. "Please, Lyra…"

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, revealing the brilliant silver glow he had grown to fear and crave. She looked at him, and Kael felt as if the air itself had thickened.

There was no warmth in those eyes. No softness. Only fury, power, and a quiet, terrifying calm.

"Kael," she said, her voice low, steady, and far colder than he had ever heard. "You—"

"Lyra, I'm sorry!" he burst out, desperation bleeding into every word. "I… I was wrong. I never should have—"

She raised a trembling hand. Kael froze. The movement wasn't threatening—but the energy radiating from her hand made the room feel smaller, tighter, like the walls themselves were holding their breath.

"Don't," she interrupted sharply. "Don't speak my name as if it means anything to you."

The words hit him like silver blades. He flinched. His chest ached—not from the physical wounds of battle but from the knowledge that he had truly lost her trust.

Kael's voice dropped to a whisper. "I never wanted to hurt you…"

Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Hurt me? No, Kael. You destroyed me. You broke something I didn't even know could be broken. And now…" Her gaze hardened, shimmering silver against the dim light. "Now, I don't know if I even want you in my life."

Sienna stepped forward quickly. "Lyra, you need rest—"

"I don't need anything from anyone," Lyra snapped, her voice cutting through Sienna like a blade. "Especially him." She looked directly at Kael. "I'm done with apologies."

Kael felt his hands clench into fists. Rage, guilt, and helplessness warred inside him. How can I fix this? How can I reach her?

He opened his mouth to say something, anything, but Lyra shook her head, stopping him before words could leave his lips.

Outside the room, in the shadowed corners of the house, the faintest sound whispered through the air.

Darius.

Though he wasn't visible, Kael could feel the presence—the same aura of power, calm, and danger he had sensed in the forest.

He's here… watching, Kael realized, his stomach twisting with unease.

Inside, Lyra shivered, her body still trembling from the silver arrow's venom and the surge of her own power. She pressed her hands against her temples as memories of the fight—the hunters, the arrow, the chaos—flashed in her mind.

I am not weak anymore, she thought, and I will not be controlled.

Her wolf stirred within her, coiling and pulsing with raw energy. It responded not just to her anger, but to something deeper, older—a recognition of Darius's presence, though he had not touched her.

Kael watched her, torn between awe and fear. "Lyra… please," he whispered again, though this time it was quieter, almost pleading.

Lyra's silver eyes narrowed. "Kael… you lost the right to plead."

He flinched, the words echoing in the room like the harsh slap of reality.

The pack members gathered cautiously outside the door, sensing the tension radiating from Lyra. The air itself seemed charged, shimmering faintly with her power. Even seasoned wolves stayed silent.

Kael rose and approached her slowly, hands raised in a gesture of peace. "I know I can't undo what I did… but I will protect you, always."

Her laugh was cold, hollow, and terrifying. "Protect me? You couldn't even protect yourself from your own mistakes."

He stopped. Her words cut deeper than any wound he had endured in battle.

Lyra's gaze softened for a moment—but only a flicker—and then hardened again. She pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the bond between them—strong, lingering, but fractured. Her eyes glowed brighter.

The bond is still alive… but it is mine, not his, she realized, and for the first time, the full weight of her power stirred.

The room pulsed faintly with silver light as she took a shaky breath. "I need… to understand what I've become."

Kael's eyes burned with a mix of fear and desire. "I will help you," he whispered. "I'll do anything—"

"No," she interrupted. "Not you. Not yet. Not anyone."

And then, almost imperceptibly, the air shifted again. Kael froze, sensing the familiar yet terrifying presence.

Darius was near, hidden in the shadows, watching silently.

This is only the beginning, Kael thought, heart hammering. And I don't know if I can keep her… or if someone else already has.
