There it was. The truth, but it was too late.
"I was going to return it," he added quickly, panic rising again. "I swear, I was going to fix everything, you would not have even known…."
"I knew," I said simply.
That silenced him.
"I always know."
He started crying then.
"Please, boss," he begged, his voice breaking completely now. "Do not kill me, I am begging you, I will fix it, I will work, I will pay everything back, just give me another chance…."
I watched him unmoved.
"You knew the rule," I said.
My tone did not change.
"No stealing."
He nodded frantically, his head jerking too fast, like he thought movement alone could save him. His chest rose and fell in uneven bursts, and the fear in his eyes had deepened into something raw and desperate.
"I know, I know, I am sorry…"
"And you still did it."
