I had become used to this life in just few days.
The morning sunlight spilled through the tall windows of the dining room, casting long, warm streaks across the polished floor. I pushed open the door, careful not to make a sound, and saw Salvatore already seated at the table, his posture rigid, his eyes scanning over some documents that had been left before him. The moment I stepped in, I felt the familiar tightening in my chest, the kind that reminded me that I was no longer simply Elsie, a girl who had wandered into an unfamiliar world. I was Mrs. Vitale now, and he was the man who ruled it.
"Good morning," I said softly, my voice barely above the hum of the morning air. My fingers fiddled nervously with the edge of my dress as I moved toward the seat across from him.
