The car moved smoothly through the night, the engine low and steady beneath us, but my mind was not quiet. It had not been quiet since I left the house.
Since I left her.
I leaned back slightly, my arms resting against my sides, my gaze fixed ahead, though I was not paying attention to the road. The events of the night had settled where they belonged, filed away, handled, finished.
But something else had taken their place. I exhaled slowly, then spoke.
"Call the doctor," I said, my voice calm but firm. "Tell him to meet me at the house."
Matteo glanced at me briefly before nodding.
"Yes, boss."
There was something in his expression. It was a faint hint of a smile.
"I will do that now," he added, already reaching for his phone.
I said nothing. I simply watched as he unlocked it and began typing, his fingers moving quickly, efficiently, sending the message without delay. The glow of the screen reflected faintly against his face before he lowered it again.
