We stood back in the Nexus, the smell of old paper and ink slowly fading away. I carefully placed the Tome of Omniscience into my bag, feeling incredibly smart and powerful.
"That was... peaceful," Aiko said, stretching her arms and letting out a satisfied breath. "My brain feels full of knowledge. I learned so many things today."
"Right?" I grinned, adjusting my camera. "But you know what? After all that reading and studying... I feel like having some fun! Some real action!"
Hana meowed loudly in agreement, jumping onto my shoulder and flicking her tail excitedly. She was always ready for fun.
I looked out at the infinite sea of doors floating in the starry void. We had seen so many amazing places—deserts, libraries, machines, dreams, data worlds... my eyes suddenly stopped at one that looked incredibly energetic.
It wasn't made of wood, stone, or metal. It was made of bright, colorful plastic, glass, and neon lights. It looked exactly like the entrance to an arcade or a giant game console. Buttons, joysticks, and flashing lights covered the surface, and it hummed with an electric excitement that made me want to jump around.

In the distance, there were massive castles made of Lego-like bricks, roller coasters that looped through the clouds, and giant cannons that shot out confetti.
And everywhere! There were game sounds! Ping! Pong! Level Up! Jumping sound effects!

We started walking along the path. It was amazing. We saw creatures that looked like walking pixels, friendly monsters that just wanted to play tag, and people running around wearing sportswear and capes.
Hana was having the time of her life. She started chasing a floating butterfly made of light, and every time she jumped, she left a trail of sparkles and star symbols.

And the ground... the ground started to look cracked and broken, like a game disc that was scratched.
ERROR. GLITCH. FREEZE.
"No..." I whispered. "Not again. Why does every beautiful world have to get corrupted?"
Suddenly, the sky turned black. And from the darkness, a massive figure descended.
It was a man wearing heavy, black armor that looked like it was made of broken controllers and wires. His eyes glowed with a harsh red light. He was floating in the air, looking down at us with disdain.
"I am... Hard Mode," his voice boomed, sounding like static and deep bass. "And this game... is too easy. It is boring. I am making it... impossible."
"What?!" I stepped forward. "You can't do that! Games are supposed to be fun! If you make it impossible, no one will want to play! Everyone will give up!"
"Giving up is good," Hard Mode sneered. "Only the strongest deserve to exist. Weakness is a bug. And I... am the patch."
He raised his hand, and the entire environment transformed.
The nice green grass turned into spikes and lava. The platforms disappeared. The friendly NPCs turned into aggressive monsters with high attack power.

"He is making everything too powerful!" I panted, sweating. "Aiko, be careful! One mistake and we are out!"
"I know!" Aiko shouted, dodging a laser beam that was moving way too fast. "He is cheating! He is modifying the rules!"
Hard Mode laughed, floating higher up. "You cannot win! I am the difficulty! I am the challenge! I am unbeatable!"
He fired a massive beam of dark energy at us. It was so big it covered the entire screen.
I tried to block. I used the Gem of Truth, the Harmony Gem, everything! But his power was overwhelming. He was literally the concept of difficulty itself.
BOOM!
I was thrown back, sliding across the ground. My health bar was flashing red. I was almost out.
"We can't beat him..." I whispered, feeling tired. "He is too strong. He makes everything harder just by existing."

"You want difficulty?" I shouted. "You want challenge?"
I opened my bag and took out all the gems. I combined them. But I didn't make a sword. I didn't make a storm.
I made something else.

I raised my hands high into the air.

"You see," I said, floating up into the air to face him. "You think being hard makes you strong. But there is something stronger than difficulty."

I clapped my hands.

A golden wave spread out from me. All the spikes turned into flowers. All the lava turned into water you can swim in. All the enemies stopped being aggressive and started dancing instead!
"NOOOOOO!" Hard Mode screamed. "I AM THE CHALLENGE! I AM SUPPOSED TO BE HARD!"
"Not anymore!" I flew right up to him, surrounded by invincibility stars. "I am turning you into... EASY MODE!"
I touched his chest.

[DIFFICULTY SET TO: PEACEFUL]
His heavy black armor shattered into confetti. His scary red eyes turned into cute sparkly eyes. His dark clothes turned into a bright tracksuit.
He shrank down, looking much smaller and friendlier now. He looked confused.
"I... feel... light?" he whispered. "I don't have to be heavy anymore?"
"No," I smiled, landing next to him and patting his shoulder. "You can be strong and still be fun! You can be challenging but still fair! Games are about enjoying the journey, not just suffering!"
Hard Mode—now looking like a cool gamer guy—scratched his head and laughed awkwardly.
"Wow... you are right. I was so obsessed with being the final boss, I forgot how to just... play."
The entire realm lit up instantly.
The sky turned bright and sunny again. The music turned upbeat and happy. The blocks turned colorful and cute. Everyone was cheering and dancing.
From the center of the realm, the Core Crystal floated down. It was shaped like a perfect diamond controller, glowing with infinite energy.
'The Gem of Play,' the voice echoed happily. 'With this, you can turn any danger into a game, turn any hardship into fun, and never lose your spirit.'
I took the gem. It felt light, happy, and incredibly powerful.
"Hey," the guy—now calling himself Easy—said to me. "As an apology, want all the items? I'll give you infinite lives and max stats!"

"Right?" I laughed, putting the Gem of Play away. "Sometimes, the best way to win is not to fight harder... but to just enjoy yourself."
I looked at the camera.
"Minna-san, we saved the Game World! And now we have the power to make anything fun! There is still so much more to see!"
"Next stop... who knows! But we are ready!"
