Chapter 17 - LINES THAT BEGIN TO BLUR

The academy hall was quieter than usual.

Not because there were fewer students—

But because everyone was waiting.

"…Today's ranking announcement will determine how others perceive us moving forward," one student whispered. "This is not just about numbers, but about influence within the academy."

"…And influence decides who becomes an ally, and who becomes a target," another added. "The higher you rise, the more attention you attract."

Christy stood among the Elite Class A students, her expression calm—

But her thoughts—

Restless.

"…Why am I thinking about him again, even when something this important is about to happen?" she thought. "This isn't the right time to get distracted by something so… personal."

Her eyes shifted—

Luxe stood nearby.

Unbothered.

"…He looks completely unaffected, as if rankings don't matter to him at all," she thought. "But somehow, that only makes him stand out even more."

The instructor stepped forward.

"…The results of your first combat evaluation have been finalized," he announced. "Your rankings reflect not only your individual performance, but your ability to function within a team."

The hall fell silent.

"…We will now begin the announcement."

Names echoed—

"…Rank 5 — Kael Draven."

A ripple moved through the crowd.

"…He barely showed anything during the exam, yet he still ranked within the top five," one student said. "That means his evaluation score must have been extremely efficient."

Kael simply smiled faintly.

"…Interesting," he muttered quietly. "Still not enough, but acceptable for now."

"…Rank 3 — Leonhardt Virel."

Leonhardt crossed his arms.

"…Third place after that duel is reasonable, but I won't stay there for long," he said. "Next time, the result will be different."

Christy took a breath.

"…Stay calm," she told herself. "Focus on the result, not the outcome of others."

"…Rank 2 — Christy Astrell."

A wave of whispers followed.

"…Second place already? That means her performance and coordination were nearly flawless," someone said. "She's not just talented, she's extremely consistent."

Christy stepped forward slightly.

"…Second," she thought. "That means I'm close… but not enough."

Her gaze shifted—

Toward Luxe.

"…Rank 1 — Luxe Valcrest."

Silence.

Then—

Murmurs exploded across the hall.

"…Of course," one student said. "After that duel and the exam performance, no one else fits that position."

"…But the gap between him and the others feels larger than the rankings suggest," another added. "It's like he's operating on a completely different level."

Luxe stood calmly.

"…Rank is simply a result of performance, not the goal itself," he said quietly. "If I focus on rank, I limit my own growth."

Christy watched him.

"…He doesn't care about being first," she thought. "But somehow, that makes him more deserving of it than anyone else here."

Her chest tightened slightly.

"…Why does it feel like I'm being pulled toward him more with every interaction?"

After the announcement—

Groups began to form.

Noble representatives approached selectively.

"…The Virel Duchy would be interested in forming a strategic partnership with you," one noble said to Leonhardt. "Your growth potential aligns with our long-term interests."

"…I'll consider it," Leonhardt replied. "But I'm not interested in being controlled."

Meanwhile—

Two nobles approached Christy.

"…Lady Astrell, your performance has been exceptional, and your placement confirms your potential," one said. "Our faction would benefit greatly from your presence."

Christy remained calm.

"…I appreciate the offer, but I will take time before making any decisions," she replied. "Choosing without understanding the full situation would be irresponsible."

From a distance—

Another group approached Luxe.

"…Your Highness, aligning with our faction would significantly strengthen your influence within the academy," one said. "We can provide resources, information, and strategic support."

Luxe looked at them briefly.

"…I have no interest in alliances that limit my freedom of action," he replied calmly. "Support that comes with conditions is rarely worth accepting."

The nobles hesitated.

"…Then perhaps a temporary cooperation—"

"…No," Luxe said.

Silence.

They stepped back.

Lumi observed quietly.

"…Rejecting them directly will reduce immediate political pressure, but it may also create hidden opposition," she said softly. "Those who cannot control you may attempt to undermine you instead."

Luxe nodded.

"…That is expected," he replied. "But it is better than becoming dependent on them."

Christy watched everything.

"…He rejected them without hesitation, even knowing the consequences," she thought. "Most people would accept that kind of support without thinking twice."

She stepped toward him.

"…You turned them down immediately, even though their offer could have benefited you significantly," she said. "Most people would have accepted, at least temporarily."

Luxe looked at her.

"…Temporary alliances often create long-term complications," he replied. "It's better to avoid unnecessary ties unless they are absolutely necessary."

Christy smiled faintly.

"…You always choose the more difficult path instead of the easier one," she said. "That makes your decisions harder to understand, but also more meaningful."

Luxe tilted his head slightly.

"…And you?" he asked. "What will you do about the offers you received?"

Christy paused.

"…I haven't decided yet," she said. "But I don't think I want to join any faction right now."

Luxe nodded.

"…That's a reasonable decision," he said. "Observing first allows you to avoid unnecessary risks."

Christy looked at him.

"…Then I'll observe alongside you," she said softly.

Luxe paused briefly.

"…You don't have to follow my approach," he replied. "Your decisions should be your own."

Christy smiled.

"…They are," she said. "I'm choosing this because I want to, not because of you."

A brief silence.

Then—

She looked away slightly.

"…Although… staying near you does feel more reassuring than I expected," she added quietly.

Luxe didn't respond immediately.

"…Reassuring?" he asked.

Christy nodded.

"…Yes," she said softly. "It feels like things won't fall apart as long as you're there."

Her heart—

Beat faster.

"…Why did I say that out loud?" she thought. "That sounded far more personal than I intended."

Luxe looked at her calmly.

"…Then I'll make sure that feeling isn't misplaced," he said quietly.

Christy froze slightly.

"…That answer…" she thought. "Why does it feel so… different from anything I've heard before?"

Christy looked at him again.

"…You always speak with certainty, but sometimes your words feel more personal than you realize," she said softly. "Do you ever think about how others interpret what you say?"

Luxe thought for a moment.

"…Not always," he admitted. "But if something matters, I try to be clear about it."

Christy smiled gently.

"…Then maybe you should think about it more often," she said. "Because your words can affect people more than you expect."

Luxe nodded slightly.

"…I'll keep that in mind," he said.

Christy turned slightly.

"…This is just the beginning," she thought. "But something has already started to change."

Her chest tightened softly.

"…And I don't think I want to stop it."

From a distance—

Kael observed silently.

"…Connections, trust, influence… everything is forming exactly as expected," he muttered quietly. "This environment really does bring out interesting dynamics."

He smiled faintly.

"…Let's see how long it takes before those connections become weaknesses instead."

The academy stood calm.

But beneath that calm—

Everything was shifting.
