Chapter 22 - WHAT REMAINS AFTER THE STORM

The forest was silent—

But not empty.

The aftermath of the battle still lingered in the air, as if the world itself had not fully accepted what had just happened.

Christy stood still for a moment, her eyes fixed on the small dragon resting comfortably on Luxe's shoulder.

"…So this is the being that responded to your mana at the exact moment you reached your limit and completely reversed the outcome of the battle," she said softly. "And from what I can sense, its presence is stabilizing everything around us rather than disrupting it."

The small dragon tilted its head slightly.

"…Kyuu."

Christy blinked once.

"…It only makes that sound, yet somehow it feels like it understands everything we are saying without any difficulty," she said. "That level of awareness without language is… unusual, even for magical creatures."

Luxe glanced at the dragon briefly, his expression calm but slightly thoughtful.

"…It doesn't need language to understand intent, and its reactions are too precise to be instinct alone," he replied. "Which means its awareness is already far beyond its current form."

The dragon puffed its cheeks.

"…Kyuu!"

Christy's lips curved slightly.

"…That sounded like it disagreed with your explanation, which means it probably understands more than you're giving it credit for," she said. "Or it simply doesn't like being analyzed like that."

Luxe looked at it again.

"…That's also possible," he said calmly.

Lumi stepped forward from the shadows, her gaze sharper than usual as she observed the dragon closely.

"…Its mana signature is not just powerful, it is fundamentally different from anything I have encountered before," she said. "Even now, it is suppressing the residual demonic energy in this area without actively doing anything."

Christy's eyes widened slightly.

"…So it is affecting the environment passively, without even trying to exert control over its power," she said. "That would mean its natural state is already beyond standard magical classifications."

Kael walked forward slowly, his eyes fixed on the dragon with quiet interest.

"…So this is what was hidden inside the egg all along, and it chose to awaken at the exact moment Luxe reached his limit," he said. "That kind of timing is either perfect coincidence… or something far more deliberate."

Luxe didn't respond.

Christy turned toward Luxe, her expression shifting slightly as she observed his posture more carefully.

"…You are still injured, even if your mana stabilized after that synchronization, and your body clearly absorbed more damage than you are acknowledging," she said. "Ignoring that will only make recovery slower and potentially more dangerous."

Luxe exhaled quietly.

"…It's within manageable limits, and none of the damage interferes with basic movement or combat readiness," he replied. "Which means focusing on it now would not provide any immediate benefit."

Christy frowned slightly.

"…You always reduce everything to efficiency, even when the situation is clearly more than just numbers and outcomes," she said. "There are moments where acknowledging damage is not weakness, but necessary awareness."

Luxe paused for a brief moment.

"…I'm aware of the damage," he said. "I'm simply choosing not to prioritize it right now."

Christy sighed softly.

"…You're not easy to argue with, and that's becoming increasingly frustrating the more I understand how you think," she said quietly. "But that doesn't mean I'm going to stop pointing it out."

The dragon suddenly jumped down from Luxe's shoulder.

"…Kyuu."

It landed lightly between them.

Then—

It nudged Luxe's leg.

Christy blinked.

"…It is definitely reacting to your condition, and that movement looked intentional rather than random," she said. "Is it… checking on you?"

Luxe looked down.

"…It seems like it," he said.

The dragon turned toward Christy.

"…Kyuu."

Then it stepped closer.

Christy hesitated slightly.

"…Can I touch it, or will that trigger some kind of reaction we are not prepared for?" she asked carefully. "Because I would prefer not to accidentally provoke something we do not fully understand."

Luxe nodded once.

"…It hasn't shown any hostility, and its behavior suggests selective acceptance rather than aggression," he said. "So it should be safe."

Christy slowly reached out—

Her fingers brushing lightly against its head.

The dragon froze.

Then—

"…Kyuu…"

It leaned into her hand.

Christy's eyes softened immediately.

"…It's warm, and its mana feels calm and stable instead of overwhelming or chaotic," she said softly. "It's almost like it's deliberately controlling its presence to avoid causing discomfort."

The dragon chirped happily.

"…Kyuu!"

Then suddenly—

It jumped back onto Luxe's shoulder.

Christy blinked.

"…It returned to you immediately after that, which suggests a clear preference in its behavior," she said. "That kind of attachment usually forms based on initial bonding conditions."

Luxe glanced at it.

"…It awakened in response to me, so that connection is probably stronger," he said.

Christy smiled faintly.

"…Or it simply decided that it likes you more, which is not something you can logically analyze into a different conclusion," she said. "Sometimes, choices are just choices."

The dragon puffed its cheeks again.

"…Kyuu!"

It looked at Christy—

Then turned its head away slightly.

Christy froze.

"…Did it just ignore me on purpose, or am I misunderstanding what just happened?" she asked.

Lumi answered calmly.

"…That behavior appears to indicate selective attention rather than rejection," she said. "It is likely testing social boundaries between individuals."

Kael chuckled softly.

"…Or it's just being possessive over the one it bonded with first," he said. "That would make far more sense given its reaction."

The dragon turned instantly—

"…KYUU!"

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"…So it understands tone, intent, and possibly even implication," he said. "That makes it far more intelligent than its current form suggests."

By the time they reached the academy gates—

The sun had begun to set.

But the moment they entered—

Everything changed.

Eyes turned instantly.

Whispers spread like fire.

"…That team just returned from the outer forest mission, and their condition suggests they faced something far beyond standard difficulty parameters," one student whispered.

"…Wait, what is that creature on Luxe's shoulder, and why does it feel like it's radiating controlled mana even from this distance?" another asked.

"…Is that actually a dragon, or are we misunderstanding what we're sensing right now?"

Christy glanced around.

"…The reaction is immediate, and the attention is not just curiosity—it is recognition mixed with uncertainty and concern," she said. "This will spread throughout the academy faster than any official report."

Kael smiled faintly.

"…Of course it will," he said. "Power like that doesn't remain hidden, especially when it appears this suddenly."

The dragon looked around.

"…Kyuu…"

Then puffed its chest proudly.

Christy blinked.

"…Did it just react to the attention it's receiving, or is it simply mimicking behavior based on the environment?" she asked.

Luxe sighed quietly.

"…It's probably enjoying it," he said.

They stopped just before entering the main building.

Christy turned toward Luxe again.

"…You almost broke yourself back there, and even now you're standing as if nothing happened," she said softly. "Do you really believe that pretending nothing happened makes it easier to move forward?"

Luxe didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…It's not about pretending," he said. "It's about not letting it affect what comes next."

Christy stepped closer.

"…Then next time, don't decide alone that you have to endure everything," she said. "Because I am already choosing to stand with you, whether you acknowledge it or not."

A brief silence passed.

The dragon chirped softly.

"…Kyuu."

Luxe looked at both of them—

Then forward.

"…We'll deal with that together next time," he said.

Christy smiled faintly.

"…Good," she said.

And this time—

They didn't walk separately.

They walked together.
