Chapter 21 - THE DRAGON AWAKENS

The world had already reached its breaking point.

The High Demon stood at the center of the ruined clearing, its presence distorting the air itself as if reality struggled to contain it.

Dark energy gathered in its palm again—denser, heavier, more violent than before.

Christy's voice trembled slightly, but she forced it steady.

"…That energy concentration is significantly higher than its previous output, and if it releases that attack directly, we will not have any viable method of defense remaining," she said. "At this point, retreat is not a strategic option—it is the only option left for survival."

Luxe didn't move.

"…If we retreat now, it will continue adapting, and the next encounter will be even more impossible to control," he replied calmly. "This is the point where we either end it—or get erased."

Christy stepped closer, her voice lowering but more intense than before.

"…Then let me stand beside you instead of watching you force yourself past your limits again," she said. "You keep choosing to carry everything alone, and I refuse to accept that as the only way forward."

A brief silence passed between them.

Even as the sky above seemed to darken under the pressure of the incoming attack.

Then—

"…You are standing beside me," Luxe said quietly. "But this… is not something I will let you take."

Her breath caught.

"…You keep saying that, but every time something goes wrong, you move ahead of me before I can even act," she said. "At this rate, I won't be fighting with you—I'll just be someone you protect."

"…You're wrong," Luxe replied.

She froze slightly.

"…You're the reason I can fight like this in the first place," he said. "Without your analysis, your timing, and your awareness, I wouldn't even reach this point."

Christy looked at him—

Really looked.

"…Then stop deciding alone which risks are yours to take," she said softly. "Because I'm already choosing to stand here with you."

For a moment—

Luxe didn't respond.

Then—

"…Stay close," he said.

That was enough.

The High Demon raised its hand.

"…Adaptation complete," it said in a distorted voice. "…Elimination sequence… final phase."

The attack fell.

A sphere of compressed destruction, tearing through the air with overwhelming force.

Everything slowed.

The ground trembled.

The air screamed.

Luxe stepped forward.

Lightning surged violently around him—far more unstable than before.

"Volt Acceleration."

CRACK—!!

He appeared directly beneath the descending attack—

And raised his sword.

Christy's voice broke.

"…That output exceeds your current mana capacity, and forcing this level of defense will cause irreversible internal damage," she said. "If you take this head-on, you may not be able to stand again afterward."

Luxe exhaled slowly.

"…Then I'll make sure it ends before that matters."

The attack collided.

BOOOOOOM—!!!

The explosion tore through the clearing.

The ground shattered beneath them.

Shockwaves ripped through the forest.

And Luxe—

Held.

Barely.

His arm trembled violently.

His breathing broke into uneven bursts.

His mana—

Collapsing.

Christy stepped forward instinctively.

"…Your control is failing, and your output is dropping rapidly under sustained pressure," she said. "If you continue like this, your body will not withstand another impact."

The High Demon stepped forward again.

Unaffected.

"…Resistance insufficient," it said.

At the edge of the battlefield—

Kael watched.

Silent.

Unmoving.

"…So this is your limit," he murmured softly. "I was expecting something… a little more."

For a moment—

Dark energy flickered faintly around his fingers.

Then vanished.

"…Not yet," he whispered.

At Luxe's side—

The egg trembled violently.

Cracks spread across its surface—

Faster.

Deeper.

Light burst from within.

Christy turned toward it, her eyes widening.

"…It's reacting directly to your mana instability and the pressure you're under," she said. "It's not just responding—it's trying to synchronize with you."

Luxe's vision blurred.

"…Then it chose this moment," he muttered.

The High Demon raised its hand again.

Final strike.

Luxe tried to move—

But his body—

Didn't respond.

Christy stepped forward.

"…Then I'll take this one," she said.

"…No."

Luxe grabbed her wrist.

"…You stay behind me."

Her voice broke.

"…Why do you keep choosing this, even when you can barely stand?" she asked. "Why do you always decide that you're the one who has to endure everything alone?"

A brief silence.

Then—

"…Because I know you would do the same for me," Luxe replied quietly.

Her eyes widened.

The attack descended.

Time slowed.

Sound disappeared.

And then—

The egg—

Shattered.

Light exploded outward.

Not violent—

But absolute.

Pure.

Overwhelming.

The High Demon's attack—

Stopped mid-air.

Frozen.

The entire battlefield—

Paused.

From within the light—

A small figure emerged.

White.

Soft.

Glowing faintly with blue light.

Tiny wings.

Bright, clear eyes.

"…Kyuu."

Silence.

Christy whispered.

"…That presence… it's not just powerful, it feels completely different from anything we've encountered before," she said. "It's like it exists beyond normal elemental structure."

Lumi's voice followed, calm but slightly shaken.

"…Its mana signature is not measurable within standard parameters, and its existence itself is stabilizing the surrounding distortion," she said. "This is not a normal entity."

The small dragon floated gently—

Then turned—

Toward Luxe.

"…Kyuu."

Suddenly—

Light surged into Luxe.

His body—

Stabilized.

His mana—

Restored.

Amplified.

Lightning erupted around him—

Sharper.

Cleaner.

Alive.

Christy stepped back slightly, stunned.

"…Your mana flow is no longer unstable, and your output has increased beyond your previous limit without any visible strain," she said. "That shouldn't be possible unless an external source is directly synchronizing with you."

Luxe exhaled.

"…So this is what was waiting."

The High Demon moved again—

But this time—

Luxe moved first.

Faster.

Far faster.

"Volt Acceleration."

CRACK—!!

He appeared in front of it.

"…Speed and output have both increased simultaneously, and its reaction window has been reduced significantly," Christy said. "This is not the same level as before."

Luxe raised his sword.

Lightning surged—

Mixed with something deeper.

"…Let's finish this."

"Azure Dragon Lightning."

CRACK—!!!

The strike tore through the battlefield.

The High Demon froze.

Its body—

Split.

Its core—

Destroyed instantly.

Silence returned.

The small dragon floated beside Luxe.

"…Kyuu."

Christy stepped closer slowly.

"…So this is what was inside the egg all along," she said softly. "And it chose to awaken at the exact moment you were about to fall."

Luxe looked at it.

"…Not just awaken," he said. "It chose to respond."

Far away—

Something watched.

And for the first time—

It reacted.

"…So the dragon has finally awakened," a distant voice murmured. "Then the next phase can begin."

The small dragon landed gently on Luxe's shoulder.

"…Kyuu."

Luxe closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them.

Sharper.

Stronger.

"…Let's go back."
