Chapter 20 - THE EDGE WHERE EVERYTHING BREAKS

The silence that followed the previous encounter did not feel like relief.

It felt like preparation.

As if something had been waiting for them to reach this exact point.

The forest opened into a wide clearing, but instead of light, there was pressure.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Unnatural.

Christy slowed her steps, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the mana currents gathering ahead.

"…The distortion we have been tracking since earlier is no longer scattered, and it is now converging into a single concentrated source," she said. "That level of compression suggests a central entity with both intelligence and control."

Luxe didn't stop moving, but his pace slowed just enough to adjust.

"…Then everything we encountered before was not resistance, but guidance," he replied. "We were led here intentionally, which means the enemy is confident in what awaits us."

Kael tilted his head slightly, his expression calm but faintly amused.

"…So instead of wandering into danger, we were carefully guided toward it step by step," he said. "That either means arrogance… or absolute certainty of victory."

Lumi's voice slipped through the shadows, quieter than usual.

"…The mana signature ahead is not only stronger than before, but it also contains structured demonic patterns," she said. "This is not a beast, and it is not an assassin—this is something higher."

Christy's breath steadied, but her posture sharpened.

"…A High Demon operating under control would explain both the coordination and the escalation pattern we have been observing," she said. "If that is the case, this will not be a simple engagement."

Luxe's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Then we treat this as a boss-level encounter," he said. "No wasted movement, no repeated patterns, and no hesitation once an opening appears."

Kael smiled faintly.

"…Now that sounds like something worth watching carefully," he said.

The moment they stepped fully into the clearing—

The air collapsed.

Not metaphorically.

Literally.

Pressure forced downward—

As if the space itself had become heavier.

Then—

It appeared.

A tall humanoid figure stepped forward from the center of the distortion.

Black armor, fractured with glowing red cracks.

Wings—unfinished, flickering between shadow and form.

Eyes—burning crimson.

"…Confirmed," Lumi said quietly. "High Demon—commander class, controlled state, and operating under external directive."

Christy's voice lowered instinctively.

"…Its mana density alone is already exceeding what we should be capable of handling at our current level," she said. "If we engage directly without coordination, we will lose immediately."

The High Demon raised its head slowly.

"…Targets identified," it said in a distorted voice. "…Adaptation sequence… complete."

Kael's smile widened slightly.

"…So it's been watching us long enough to analyze our patterns," he said. "That makes this far more interesting than random combat."

It moved.

No warning.

No buildup.

Just—

Instant movement.

Luxe reacted immediately.

"Volt Acceleration."

CRACK—!!

The demon's strike missed—

Barely.

The ground behind Luxe exploded violently.

"…Its speed exceeds anything we have encountered so far, and its attack power is significantly amplified through demonic reinforcement," Christy said rapidly. "If we misread even one movement, the damage will be critical."

Luxe repositioned, lightning flickering across his body.

"…Then we do not misread," he said calmly.

He stepped forward—

"Thunder Lance."

CRACK—!!

The strike landed—

But the demon didn't move.

"…It absorbed the impact and redistributed it across its entire structure," Christy said. "Direct strikes alone will not be sufficient to break its defenses."

The demon moved again—

Faster.

It appeared—

Directly in front of Christy.

"…Christy—!"

Before the strike landed—

Luxe appeared.

"Volt Acceleration."

Their weapons collided.

The force—

Pushed Luxe back.

"…That's heavier than before," he muttered.

Christy steadied herself.

"…It is adapting to your output level and adjusting its force accordingly," she said. "If this continues, it will eventually surpass your current limits."

The demon attacked again.

Relentless.

Precise.

Luxe intercepted.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Each impact—

Heavier than the last.

Christy's voice tightened slightly.

"…Your mana output is becoming unstable, and your reaction speed is beginning to drop under sustained pressure," she said. "If this continues, you will not be able to maintain control much longer."

Luxe exhaled slowly.

"…Then we end it before that point."

Christy stepped forward instinctively.

"…Then let me support directly instead of standing behind you every time something escalates beyond expectations," she said. "I don't want to remain someone who only reacts after you've already taken the risk."

Luxe didn't turn.

"…You're not standing behind me," he said. "You're identifying what I need to end the fight."

Christy paused.

"…That's not the same as fighting alongside you," she said quietly.

A brief silence followed.

Then—

"…Then stay close enough to do both," Luxe replied.

Her expression softened.

"…Then don't move faster than I can follow," she said.

From the side—

Kael watched.

Silent.

Observing every movement carefully.

"…You're reaching your limit faster than expected, which means this opponent is closer to your current ceiling than anticipated," he said softly. "I wonder how far you'll go before you break."

For a moment—

A faint dark energy flickered around his fingers.

Then disappeared.

The High Demon raised both arms.

Dark energy surged violently.

The ground cracked.

The air distorted.

"…That attack will cover a wide radius, and full evasion will not be possible given its current output level," Christy said urgently. "If it lands directly, we will not be able to continue fighting afterward."

Luxe stepped forward.

"…Then we don't evade."

Christy froze.

"…You cannot block that at your current output without severe consequences," she said. "Your body will not be able to stabilize the backlash."

Luxe didn't move.

"…Then you stay behind me."

The attack descended.

Luxe raised his sword.

Lightning erupted violently.

BOOM—!!

The impact—

Crushed everything.

The ground shattered.

The air screamed.

And Luxe—

Remained standing.

Barely.

At his side—

The egg trembled violently.

Cracks spread rapidly.

Light pulsed from within.

Christy's voice trembled slightly.

"…It's reacting to your mana instability and the pressure you're under," she said. "It's trying to synchronize with you, but it hasn't fully awakened yet."

Luxe struggled to stand straight.

"…Not yet," he said quietly.

The High Demon stepped forward again.

Unstoppable.

Luxe tried to move—

But his body—

Slowed.

"…Your output has dropped significantly, and your physical condition is reaching its limit," Christy said. "If you take another direct strike, recovery will not be possible in time."

She stepped forward.

"…Then I'll—"

"…No."

Luxe grabbed her wrist.

"…You stay behind me."

Her breath caught.

"…Even now… you're still choosing to protect me instead of retreating?"

"…Yes."

The High Demon raised its hand again.

Final strike.

Luxe stood.

Barely.

But unmoving.

The egg—

Cracked further.

Light spilled out.

Something inside—

Was about to awaken.
