Chapter 28 - SHADOWS THAT MOVE IN THE DARK

The academy at night was supposed to feel calm.

But tonight—

It felt like something was watching.

"…This silence isn't natural," Christy said slowly as she walked beside Luxe, her voice quieter than usual but far more serious. "It's not the peaceful kind of silence you get after exhaustion… it's the kind that feels forced, as if something is suppressing all normal activity."

Luxe didn't immediately respond. His eyes moved subtly across the corridor, observing everything without making it obvious.

"…You're right," he said after a moment. "This isn't absence of activity. It's controlled stillness. Someone—or something—is deliberately minimizing disturbances."

Christy folded her arms, her expression tightening.

"…Which means this isn't random anymore," she said. "What we saw during the tournament wasn't an isolated case. It's part of something structured… something that has already spread deeper into the academy than we initially assumed."

Lumi stepped forward from behind them, her tone calm but precise.

"…The mana patterns have changed again," she said. "During the day, the anomalies were unstable and scattered. Now they are concentrated in specific areas, and more importantly… they are synchronized."

Christy turned sharply.

"…Synchronized?" she repeated. "Are you saying whatever is causing this is coordinating multiple targets at once?"

"…Yes," Lumi replied. "Which means this is no longer influence. It is control."

"…Kyuu…"

Sylvia's growl was low—

But unmistakably hostile.

Christy immediately looked at her.

"…She's reacting much more aggressively now," she said. "Earlier it was just discomfort, but this… this feels like recognition."

Luxe gently placed his hand on Sylvia's head.

"…You recognize it, don't you?" he said quietly. "This kind of presence… you've felt it before."

Sylvia didn't relax.

"…Kyuu…"

Christy's voice lowered.

"…Luxe… whatever this is, Sylvia isn't just sensing it… she's rejecting it," she said. "That means it's something fundamentally incompatible with her nature."

Luxe nodded slowly.

"…Which confirms it," he said. "This is demonic."

They reached the lower wing of the academy.

The air changed.

Heavier.

Colder.

"…This isn't just mana corruption," Christy said, her voice tightening. "This feels like something is feeding off the environment itself."

Lumi placed her hand slightly forward, analyzing.

"…The concentration is highest below us," she said. "There is a hidden chamber… most likely not part of the official academy structure."

Christy looked at Luxe.

"…A hidden chamber inside the academy?" she said. "That alone means this has been planned for a long time."

Luxe didn't hesitate.

"…Then we're already late," he said. "Let's move."

The door wasn't locked.

It didn't need to be.

The moment they stepped inside—

The truth revealed itself.

"…No…" Christy whispered.

Students stood in rows.

Motionless.

Eyes empty.

"…They're not unconscious," Lumi said carefully. "Their bodies are active… but their consciousness is suppressed."

Christy's voice trembled slightly—not with fear, but anger.

"…They're being used," she said. "Not influenced… not controlled… used."

A slow clap echoed.

"…You arrived faster than expected."

Kael stepped forward.

From the darkness.

Christy's eyes instantly sharpened.

"…So it really is you," she said, her voice no longer calm. "I was hoping I was wrong… but clearly, I underestimated how far you were willing to go."

Kael tilted his head slightly, almost amused.

"…Underestimated?" he repeated. "That implies you had already begun forming conclusions about me. I'm curious… what exactly did you think I was?"

Christy stepped forward.

"…A rival," she said. "Someone dangerous, yes—but still human. Someone who played by rules, even if they bent them."

Her voice hardened.

"…But this…" she gestured around them, "…this isn't bending rules. This is abandoning them completely."

Kael's smile didn't fade.

"…Rules exist for those who lack the power to ignore them," he said. "What you're looking at right now isn't chaos… it's efficiency."

Luxe finally spoke.

"…You're using them as vessels," he said. "Not temporarily. Not experimentally. Systematically."

Kael's eyes shifted toward him.

"…And you understood that instantly," he said. "That's what makes you dangerous."

The students—

Moved.

Not naturally.

But violently.

"…They're being forced into motion," Lumi said. "Their motor functions are being overridden."

Christy stepped forward instantly.

"…Then we don't hold back," she said. "If we hesitate, they'll destroy themselves before we can save them."

Luxe nodded.

"…Target the corruption—not the body," he said.

The first wave attacked.

Christy reacted instantly.

"…I'll control the field—support me and focus on precision strikes," she said rapidly. "We can't afford wide-range damage in this environment."

"Frost Bind."

Ice spread across the floor—

Restricting movement.

"…Their mobility is limited, but their strength hasn't decreased," she continued. "Be careful—their bodies are reinforced beyond normal limits."

Luxe moved through the openings.

"…Understood. I'll disrupt the core directly."

"Thunder Step."

He vanished—

Reappeared—

"Chain Lightning."

The corruption flickered.

"…It's working," Christy said. "Your lightning is destabilizing the control."

Sylvia leaped forward slightly.

"…KYUU…!"

Azure sparks flickered.

Christy's eyes widened slightly.

"…She's reacting directly to the corruption," she said. "Not just sensing it—countering it."

Luxe nodded.

"…Then we finish this faster."

One by one—

The students fell.

Not dead—

Freed.

Lumi checked quickly.

"…All of them are alive," she said. "The external control has been removed."

Christy turned—

Slowly—

Toward Kael.

"…You're not walking away from this," Christy said.

Kael smiled faintly.

"…I never planned to," he replied. "If anything, I was waiting for this moment."

Christy stepped forward.

"…Luxe," she said quietly, without looking back, "don't interfere. This isn't just about strength anymore. I need to understand exactly what he's become."

Luxe didn't move.

"…Be careful," he said.

Christy nodded once.

Christy moved first.

"…I won't underestimate you again," she said as she advanced. "But I also won't let you control the pace of this fight."

"Frost Bind."

Ice surged forward—

Kael didn't move.

"…Still relying on control-based techniques," he said. "Consistent. Predictable. Effective… but limited."

The ice—

Shattered.

Christy's eyes widened.

"…That level of raw output… without visible casting…" she muttered.

Kael stepped forward.

His mana changed.

Dark.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

"…Now you see it," he said. "The difference between what you trained for… and what I chose to become."

Christy clenched her fist.

"…You call this a choice?" she said. "This isn't power. This is corruption disguised as strength."

Kael's expression didn't change.

"…And yet," he said, "it's stronger than anything you've shown so far."

Christy attacked again.

"Flame Burst!"

Kael raised his hand—

Stopped it.

Barehanded.

Christy froze for a split second.

"…You're not even trying," she said.

Kael stepped closer.

"…Because I don't need to," he replied.

"…Why?" Christy demanded. "Why go this far? You had strength, talent, and opportunity. You didn't need this."

Kael looked at her—

For a moment—

"…You still don't understand," he said quietly. "That's why you'll lose."

Christy's voice shook slightly—

"…Then make me understand."

Kael moved.

Faster than before.

"…Because this world doesn't reward potential," he said. "It rewards those who are willing to abandon limits."

BOOM—!!

Christy was thrown back.

She struggled—

Forced herself up.

"…So your answer was to become something inhuman?" she said.

Kael's voice dropped.

"…No," he said. "My answer was to stop pretending to be weak."

Christy charged—

Desperate—

Kael moved once.

CRACK—!!

She fell.

Silence.

Luxe's aura shifted.

Dangerously.

Kael glanced at him.

"…Relax," he said. "She's still alive. I'm not finished with either of you yet."

He stepped back.

Into the shadows.

And vanished.

Christy forced herself up slightly.

"…He held back," she said weakly. "That wasn't everything…"

Luxe nodded.

"…I know."

Sylvia growled softly.

"…Kyuu…"

Luxe looked into the darkness.

"…Next time… I won't."
