Chapter 20: The Hunter in the Shadows

The lantern in Rahmat Ali's shop flickered once and died, plunging the room into a suffocating darkness. The air grew cold, smelling of damp earth and ancient iron. Outside, the city sounds vanished, replaced by a silence so absolute it felt heavy.

"Maya, reach into the wooden chest behind the counter," Rahmat whispered, his voice steady despite the tension. "Find the rusted iron hook. Do not let it touch the bare floor."

Maya's hands trembled as she retrieved the cold, heavy instrument. As she turned back, she saw the blueprint on the table beginning to glow. The drop of Rahmat's blood had hit the center of the parchment, and the drawn gears were now spinning in a ghostly, silver light.

"The first ingredient is closer than we thought," Rahmat said, his eyes scanning the ceiling. "Shadow-beasts don't just wander. They are drawn to the scent of the Gatekeeper's blood."

Suddenly, a patch of darkness detached itself from the corner of the room. It moved not like a creature, but like spilled ink, slithering across the walls. Two glowing, crimson slits opened within the void—the eyes of a predator that had waited centuries for this moment.

Maya gasped, stepping back. "Is that... the beast?"

"Focus, Maya!" Rahmat commanded, gripping his cobbler's hammer. The tool pulsed with a faint blue aura. "A shadow-beast is only intangible until it strikes. When it lunges, its hide must become solid to tear flesh. That is when we take what we need."

The creature hissed, a sound like tearing silk, and leaped from the ceiling. Rahmat moved with a grace that defied his age, swinging his hammer not at the beast, but at the floor. A shockwave of silver light erupted, forcing the shadow to solidify into a jagged, wolf-like form.

"Now, Maya! The hook!"

Maya lunged forward, slamming the iron hook into the creature's spectral tail, pinning it to the physical world. The beast roared, its form flickering between smoke and leather.

Rahmat Ali pulled out a pair of silver shears, his face grim. "The first stitch of the Eternal Lock begins with the hide of the restless. Hold on, Maya! If the moon turns black before I make the first cut, we are both lost to the Void."
