Chapter 24: The First Step of the Gatekeeper

The Void King roared, a sound that felt like the earth itself was cracking. He regained his balance, his shadowy form expanding until he touched the ceiling of the tower. "A girl? You give the keys to the universe to a child who still fears the dark?"

Maya looked at the boots. They didn't look like ordinary leather anymore; they seemed to be made of captured starlight and solidified smoke. She looked at Rahmat Ali, lying pale and exhausted on the floor.

"I don't fear the dark," Maya whispered, her voice growing stronger. "I fear the world losing a man like him."

She slid her feet into the boots.

The moment her heels clicked into place, the world went silent. The ticking of the clock tower stopped. The air ceased to move. Maya felt a surge of electricity rush up her spine, and suddenly, the floor beneath her was no longer stone. She could see through the layers of the world—the veins of time, the hidden doors between dimensions, and the fraying threads of reality.

The Void King lunged, his hand a claw of pure darkness aimed at Maya's heart.

Maya didn't run. She simply took one step to the left.

But it wasn't a normal step. As her foot touched the ground, a ripple of silver light erupted, and she appeared ten feet behind the King in an instant. She hadn't moved through space; she had walked around it.

"The Gatekeeper's Step," the Void King hissed, turning around in shock. "Impossible. No one masters the Sole on the first try!"

"I'm not mastering it," Maya said, her eyes now glowing with the same blue light as Rahmat's butterfly. "I'm just following the footprints he left for me."

She stamped her right foot hard. The "Silver Stitch" that Rahmat had made earlier—the one that was about to snap—suddenly flared with blinding brilliance. Instead of breaking, the thread expanded, weaving into a net that began to wrap around the Void King.

"This tower is a clock, and your time is up," Maya declared.

She grabbed Rahmat's arm, and with one final, powerful step, the world blurred. The tower, the darkness, and the King vanished in a flash of light.

When Maya opened her eyes, they were back in the quiet, dusty shop. The morning sun was just beginning to peek through the windows. But the boots on her feet were still warm, and the Void King's scream still echoed in the distance.

Rahmat Ali opened his eyes weakly and smiled. "You... you chose the right path, Maya."
